About "Wicked City Blues"

"Wicked City Blues" is an original 1940s film-noir musical-comedy opening soon in New York at a top Off-Broadway theatre to be produced by leading Off-Broadway producers. The show had a successful run at the 350-seat Allred Theatre in Salt Lake City and was named Top 10 Plays of the Year in Utah by the Utah Deseret News.

The award-winning theatre where the show will be produced, St. Luke’s Theatre, has a great location in the Broadway Theatre District at 46th Street and 8th Avenue, one block from Times Square. It has a 70-year tradition of presenting highly entertaining and commercially successful musicals. We have over 50,000 emails of people who enjoyed musicals at this theatre. These emails will offer them $59 tickets for a discount price.

The show’s producer, John Lant, is considered one of the leading Off-Broadway producers, having produced over 100 musicals and with three shows he produced currently running Off-Broadway. John Lant is also the Production Manager of what many consider to be the most prestigious theatre in New York – Carnegie Hall.

From the Creators of the StartEngine-Funded "It Came From Beyond" Now Off Broadway

“Wicked City Blues” has the same producers and writers as “It Came From Beyond”, a 1950s sci-fi musical-comedy which opened Off-Broadway in April 2018. “It Came From Beyond” had a successful funding campaign on StartEngine in 2017 which raised $20,500 from 50 investors.

This historic campaign for “It Came From Beyond” is, as far as we know, the First Theatre Production Funded by Equity Crowdfunding in America and appears to be the First Off-Broadway Musical Funded by Equity Crowdfunding.

“It Came From Beyond” is currently getting a strong audience response running Off-Broadway at St. Luke’s Theatre with reviews like “fantastic musical numbers” (Theatre Pizzazz 6-8-18) and sounds like “John Williams’ Star Wars” (Screen Picks 6-3-18). It is expected to run in that theatre for at least a year before going on tour. It will share this theatre with “Wicked City Blues” which is also expected to run at least a year before going on tour.

We believe “Wicked City Blues” can open with the same funding ($20,000) as “It Came From Beyond” by using the same production and marketing techniques which are particular to these producers who have been successful Off-Broadway.

"Wicked City Blues" Is Ready to Go

Like “It Came From Beyond” when it was funded on StartEngine, we believe “Wicked City Blues” is ready to go. Minimal funding is required to open the show in New York – since we have components of the show that ran in Salt Lake City. We already have the staging by an Ovation Award-winning director-choreographer (Brian Paul Mendoza “Oliver"), the music, the sound effects, the 1940s film-noir video projections, the costumes, the props, the set design, the special effects, the graphic design, and the marketing email lists.

The Radio Show Characters Come Alive

The Sound Effects Are Performed Live

“Having the live sound effects performed like they were in the 1940s was hysterical."

LosAngeles.com

Like the radio dramas of the 1940s, live sound effects will be performed by an actor. This creates much of the show’s laughs, as the Sound Person has shoes to make footstep sounds, rice to make rain, crinkling plastic to make fire, a rusty ironing board to sound like an elevator door, and the breaking of carrot sticks to sound like a person’s fingers being broken by the gangsters. The sound effects will be produced the same way they were in 1940s radio shows, using authentic equipment and props. No recordings are used.

We Have Pre-Existing Brand Strength

The Concept is Unique

The concept is a radio show becomes real.  A radio show becomes a film-noir movie.

“I love the basic premise of a radio show that becomes a fully dramatized play. I haven’t seen that before.”

Michele Schultz

Vice President, Columbia Pictures

The Structure is Unique

LosAngeles.com said: “The most inventive aspect of the show is the writers’ dual story structure, with a radio show being performed in a studio while the same actors then appear to be in a 1940s film noir movie.”*

The specialty of writer Cornell Christianson is that he writes musicals with a unique structure of two parallel and interconnecting stories that go back and forth between two worlds.

“Wicked City Blues” moves back and forth between these two worlds:

  • Radio Show: what a studio audience would see if they attended a live 1940s radio show being performed in a radio station.
  • Real Scenes: what a home listener would imagine in their minds as they listened to the radio show. In other words, a 1940s film noir movie is performed on-stage.

It's the World of Detectives, Mobsters, Sexy Women, Jazz Music, Robust Dancing and the Fabulous ‘40s

The story is about a 1940s hard-boiled detective who falls in love with a beautiful blonde femme fatale who may be a murderer.

The year is 1947, and the Neptune Radio Theater presents a live mystery show featuring the adventures of Mickey Morrison, a private eye who finds himself in a maze of deception and double dealing.

His sexy blonde client, Charlotte Blane, is forever re-inventing herself and when she reveals her love for him -- is he being manipulated or is he just in over his head? Then Mickey discovers Charlotte is having an affair with her underworld lover, Lars Vanderbeck, a charming but ruthless Brit who will do whatever it takes by extracting the services of his murderous henchman: Harry the Zipper.

She had met Lars at his nightclub, The Medusa, and he seduced her by the lure of becoming his featured nightclub singer. But when she discovers the truth about Lars, everything unravels, leaving dead bodies and Charlotte holding the gun. Only Mickey is left to save her or is it Charlotte’s plan to kill him too?

*See comment above on quotations.

Theatre In New York Is Breaking Records

A record 13 million people paid to attend theatrical productions in New York City last year, according to the Broadway League. As an Off-Broadway show with what we believe to be remarkably low overhead, “Wicked City Blues” is an affordable alternative to other Broadway shows. At only $59, our full ticket price will enable “Wicked City Blues” to reach an audience who might otherwise be unable to afford a New York musical.

We Will Use Targeted Social Media Marketing

Our producers have put together an extensive social media network that includes over 50,000 emails of people who have purchased tickets to musicals at St. Luke's Theatre and another 50,000 emails of people who purchase tickets to NY musical theatre. These people will receive a marketing campaign of emails offering discount tickets, discount merchandising and news about the show including reviews, celebrity appearances, and corporate sponsorships.

Our producers have been successful by producing their shows in their own theatres (reducing rent and deposits) and on lean budgets with non-union personnel. Team Member Edmund Gaynes owns and operates St. Luke's Theatre, where the show will be produced. Our producers are able to leverage their vast experience, resources, and wide network to minimize costs while maximizing returns.

The movie screenplay treatment for “Wicked City Blues” has been written as have the stories for its two sequels. A franchise in movies or theatre is when a work has two or more sequels.  Thus, you are investing in a potential franchise. We believe the musical will work even better as a movie than on stage since it is easier to go back and forth between two worlds when done on film, as seen in the film of the musical “Chicago”.

A Love Story Suitable For All Ages

The musical is a classic 1940s detective story with a dead body, a dame who’s too hot to handle, a couple of ruthless mobsters, and a hard-boiled private eye who falls in love with a femme fatale. Mix in the madcap hilarity of a live radio show with jazz, comedy and suspense and you get yourself a great ride through the dark streets and glitzy night clubs of the Wicked City.

Film Noir movies are known for their ruthless femme fatale women. Finally, we get a chance to find out how she became that way. For what we believe to be the first time, we hear the femme fatale’s side of the story.

Our theatre features 175 seats in a prime location and approximately 65% of the seats are expected to be sold. After 28 performances Off Broadway, the company wishes to bring in income streams from cast CD,  national tours including Los Angeles, Chicago and Toronto, international tours including China and Japan, screenplay, film/TV rights, sequels, merchandising, product placements, sponsorships, colleges, high schools and community theatres according to standard Off-Broadway business practices.

Sci-Fi Show Has Run 8 Months

"It Came From Beyond" has run Off Broadway for 8 months and the longer it runs, the more lucrative it becomes for licensing and streaming. And the more it helps "Wicked City Blues".

We have raised enough money to open "Wicked City Blues" Off Broadway this May.  --Cornell

Last Week to Invest

This week is the last chance to invest in "Wicked City Blues" on StartEngine, offering closes Nov. 8th.

Looks like "It Came From Beyond" is not closing during the cold winter months of January and February as expected. New cast members are being signed to 4-month contracts starting in November and ending in March.

Our brand will be "A musical that ran Off Broadway for a year" which will mean a lot to theatres and schools around the country.  Also to "streaming" customers.

My best, Cornell

Notice of Funds Disbursement

[The following is an automated notice from the StartEngine team].

Hello!

As you might know, Wicked City Blues | WCB Productions has exceeded its minimum funding goal. When a company reaches its minimum on StartEngine, it's about to begin withdrawing funds. If you invested in Wicked City Blues | WCB Productions be on the lookout for an email that describes more about the disbursement process.

This campaign will continue to accept investments until its indicated closing date.

Thanks for funding the future.

Milestone Reached

The creators of "Wicked City Blues" have reached a milestone with their musical "It Came From Beyond" -- it has now run for SIX MONTHS.  Any musical that runs Off Broadway for six months is considered a "success" by the theatre industry.  Most shows close in one month.  This means that theatres and schools around the country will be interested in licensing the show, which the investors will share in.

NEW TREND: Just this year, something new is happening to musical theatre -- "streaming".  Stage musicals have begun to be streamed into homes for a fee of $8.  This new revenue stream for stage musicals could emerge as the future to reaching a global audience.  --Cornell Christianson

Funding Goal Reached

"Wicked City Blues" has reached its Minimum goal of raising $10,000 on

StartEngine, which means it is assured of opening Off Broadway even if

we have to borrow the remaining funds. We intend to move quickly to

open this show.

It is unheard of to have two new musicals written by the same authors

(Cornell Christianson and Norman Thalheimer) playing at the same time

Off Broadway. This should create a lot of publicity for both shows,

including from the main stream media.

This should be of great benefit to those of you who invested in "It Came From Beyond"

Show Extended to January 1st

"It Came From Beyond" has been extended until January 1st, so it will run at least 9 months, which is considered a big success for any Off Broadway show to run that long.

The writers/producers have another musical ready for Off Broadway -- the 1940s film noir musical-comedy "Wicked City Blues" -- which BEGAN TODAY its funding campaign to become the historic second theatre production funded by StartEngine.
