Shoes for a new breed of athlete

OLLO’s shoes are crafted specifically for the movement sports athlete with custom-designed ‘lasts’ (the foot form used as the base of the shoe that provides perfect stance, and a specially blended rubber compound for incredible grip). OLLO is a first-mover in the space, marketing shoes specifically for this new breed of athlete. We currently ship entirely DTC but are looking toward expanding to the wholesale market with sales in parkour and ninja warrior gyms around the world.

As parkour, freerunning, and ninja warrior entered the cultural consciousness and became one of the fastest-growing sports segments in the world, athletes remained without a purpose-built shoe for their unique movement.

They were forced to use shoes designed without the functional considerations for the way they moved and for their environments and needed something that functioned at a higher level.


The demands of movement sports beckoned for a shoe with superior grip, lightweight, flexibility, and the support needed to be compatible with the athletic skill and physical conditioning of top-level parkour, freerunning, and ninja warrior athletes.

The foundation of all footwear is the LAST, the form that shoes are built on. OLLO worked closely with Jones & Vining, a company that has been designing lasts for 90 years, to create the perfect last for movement sports. OLLO's lasts enhance toe spring, provide a natural stance, and reduce ankle roll. Our biggest performance advantage comes from our 0110 / HIGH GRIP rubber compound that gives these athletes the world-class grip they need to perform safely on all surfaces. For these athletes, their shoe is everything.


Last summer, we began testing prototypes of our new styles, ALPHA, and SAPIEN X. There is a tremendous buzz around them, OLLO's American athlete team wore the prototypes in the recent World Chase Tag US Championships (airing Nov.- Dec. on NBC Sports) and were bombarded with requests to try them out by athletes from other teams.

Nowadays, instead of putting their kids in karate or gymnastics classes, many parents are opting for parkour, freerunning, and ninja warrior training where their kids can learn the fun improvisational skills of surmounting obstacles while increasing their mental and physical prowess.

Movement sports popularity is evidenced in social channels, where Instagram accounts like @parkour.freefrun have hundreds of thousands of followers gripped by their content and 5M+ Instagram posts exist using #parkour. Some of the most popular parkour and freerunning videos get more than 2M views a month on YouTube. On TikTok alone, #parkour has 13.6B views.


                                               

In 2019 American Ninja Warrior had 4.84 million viewers per episode and is building a global franchise. In 2018 the first Parkour World Cup competitions were held in Turkey and Japan and in 2019 in China and France. Both Parkour and Ninja Warrior are being considered by the IOC to become Olympic sports. The globally expanding venues for competitions is a sign of the growth and vitality of movement sports.

We design shoes for movement sports athletes. OLLO shoes are the result of ongoing and rigorous research and development with a global team of test athletes from the parkour, freerunning, and ninja warrior worlds. We take into consideration how they move and the environments in which they train and compete. Our research, testing, and observation inform the design of our footwear from the characteristics of our cushioning materials to our durable and breathable upper materials to the exacting formulation of our high grip rubber compound.

D2C brand with margins between 4 and 4.5x landed cost

We sell 88% of our products via our own website, with the additional 12 percent sold through partner site channels. We will continue to grow our D2C sales by increasing our digital marketing efforts. Our online sales focus has allowed us to maintain a lean operating model with minimal overhead costs.

Our AOV (average order value) which represents our customers' average purchase amount sits around $95, with $21 COGS (cost of goods sold) and margins ranging between 4 and 4.5 times landed cost. The gross profit is then used to offset operating expenses and other associated costs.

Vets of the footwear game

William (Chip) Howes has proven himself as an expert in the footwear field, designing and bringing footwear to market for over 25 years for brands like Burton, TOMS, DC Shoes, and O’Neill. Chip was trained as an industrial designer at the prestigious Art Center College of Design and his experience and knowledge from working with top tier brands in the action sports and street fashion markets for the past two decades has put him in the boardroom of numerous brands as a key strategist on brand growth.


Our Development and Production Advisor Howard Lu has worked on product creation and manufacturing of footwear for almost two decades, working with Chip for much of that journey. He is an expert at international sourcing and his understanding of production methodologies allows him to get products made to the highest standards. 


Mark Toorock, our strategic sports advisor and the founder of American Parkour in Washington D.C. is a legend of parkour and freerunning. He brings to our team, deep roots in the movement sports community, and a cultural understanding of its ongoing evolution.

‘You’re it!’ Local parkour athlete plays, commentates competitive tag

PHOENIX – From start to finish, it takes 4.3 seconds.

The chaser in yellow and black sets his sights on the man in gray. He gets a running start from the edge of the “quad,” eyes on his cornered prey. The pursuer hurdles the Front Line, hops onto the base of the Mountain, then lunges onto an elevated platform to the right, extending his arm at full stretch through the side of the Loading Bay to catch his fleeing foe. 

Tag, you’re it.

A competitive ruleset for the childhood game of tag, World Chase Tag features matches consisting of 16 chases in a 40-foot by 40-foot quad strewn with creatively named obstacles, in which a member of one team earns a point by evading the other team’s tagger for 20 seconds. Teams cycle through six athletes.

The tagger here, in Team Ollo’s playoff win against No Cap at World Chase Tag USA 2020, was Fernando Arce, a Phoenix-based parkour athlete. Nicknamed the Velociraptor, Arce captioned the lightning-fast play on his Instagram “return of the raptor.” 

As team captain, Arce led OLLO to a berth in the quarterfinals of the inaugural tournament in Atlanta in October, where it lost to the ultimate champions, Colorado-based Apex.

“It was so much fun, and so needed because everyone was locked up in pandemic times, so we’re all, like, in our homes, not able to train outside or go to a gym because gyms are shut down,” Arce said. “And so, when we had this opportunity to travel, and meet up with a whole bunch of other athletes from around the U.S., it was such a fun time.”

The 2020 tournament was the first major U.S. event for World Chase Tag. Arce completed five of six tags in an average time of 10 seconds, but did not record an evasion in four attempts. For the upcoming August 2021 tournament in Akron, Ohio, where organizers are discussing welcoming an audience, Arce will take his talents to the broadcast booth.

“It’s just another expression of who I am,” he said, “expressing out and explaining our sport to people who are unknowledgeable about it and want to know more about it.”

The 2021 competition marks another key step in the rapid growth of a game that began with Christian Devaux and his son in their yard in England in 2011, chasing each other through tables, benches and “general garden rubbish.” The fledgling sport grew into a group on the online organizing service Meetup in Hyde Park, London, before hosting its first official event in 2016. Then came the meteoric rise.

“As soon as we did that first event, we put it out online,” Devaux said. “People started to watch, and once it got picked up on a couple of channels, like LADbible, Unilad, Bleacher Report, all these big Facebook and Instagram channels would ask for footage.”

World Chase Tag now has 896,000 YouTube subscribers and 160,000 Instagram followers. Devaux, who founded the competition with his brother Damien, said the sport’s mass appeal comes from its universality. As a beloved childhood game, he said, it transcends the “cultural limitations” of traditional sports.

“To chase and be chased is one of the most natural states of our mind,” he said. “We’re here on the planet. Humans have been successful because of our ability to hunt and to avoid being hunted.”



In what he calls “the Pepsi Challenge of sport,” Devaux argues that ignoring all preconceptions of what is or isn’t a legitimate sport, chase tag could win out as the most entertaining for spectators. And he said that’s largely due to its talented athletes.

“When we first started, the idea of doing, like, tag as a sport was utterly ridiculous,” he said. “But because we were lucky enough to have really good parkour professionals doing it, they legitimized the sport because they just looked so good moving over obstacles.”

This is where Arce comes in, with his decade-plus of experience doing all sorts of competitive acrobatics as a local parkour and freerunning athlete in Phoenix.

“It’s always hot, but we can train outside for hours on end, and there’s plenty of locations – universities, downtown locations,” he said. “There’s never a shortage of jumpable obstacles there in Arizona.”

In some states, parkour gyms run their own chase tag teams, whose athletes get to train together frequently. This isn’t the case in Arizona.

“Our team structure in a broader sense isn’t that formal,” said Chip Howes, CEO of OLLO the company, which makes shoes for parkour. “It’s really athletes who we support with product, who’ve always been interested in OLLO shoes.” 

Howes said Arce pledged to OLLO’s Kickstarter when the company was getting started and has been involved with it since.

While Team OLLO has featured other Arizona athletes, including Luke Anderson (who trains with Arce and is part of Cirque du Soleil) and Seth Jung (whom Arce said will play at WCT USA 2021), it also includes players from as far away as South Carolina. Though physically distant, they share a passion for tag and an enthusiasm for OLLO shoes. (In many cases, they also share a shoe size, which came in handy for Howes when OLLO was working on a new prototype he wanted to show off in competition, and only had it available in size 10).

Howes said the players’ lack of proximity was a disadvantage, but the team also benefited from being able to effectively select athletes from across the country. Arce said the team exceeded expectations at last year’s tournament.

“We were an underdog last year, because no one knew of us … we really turned some heads and made some splashes out there,” Arce said.

He’s excited to see how the squad performs in August, even though despite his best efforts to find a compromise between commentating and competing, he won’t be able to join them. He got the news that the Devaux brothers wanted him to join the broadcast only days after practicing with Anderson on a newly constructed quad at Apex in Colorado.

“A week later, they asked me about the commentating,” he said. “I’m like, ‘I just trained on it so much, and I got all this inside information and tactics downloaded.’”

But Arce said he’s saving this strategy knowledge for his teammates, his commentary and future competitions. Despite his upcoming ESPN gig, he’s eager to get back to playing tag.

“When you go down to compete, it’s like you’re just having fun with your friends sometimes,”
“You’re not even, like, really competing, you’re just like ‘Oh, I’m just gonna tag you, uh-huh!’”

As we emerge from the most restive period that many of us have ever experienced. We wanted to engage our customers with a message that OLLO is ready to move with them again. We have been preparing something special for this moment. It's time for OLLO to surge and time for our customers to again spread their wings. We chose this vintage French wallpaper as the background graphic to acknowledge the birthplace of parkour and to communicate a sense of timelessness. Beauty prevails, and always will. It's time to fly.

And here it is. OLLO's all-new Alpha. An incredible leap ahead for OLLO, designed and developed with our global athlete team, it hits all the right notes in performance and style. The great pause wreaked havoc on our timeline and forced us to slow down. In retrospect, this gave us more time to be critical of every detail of the new shoes we were developing, resulting in what we believe is the most highly considered and best finished product that OLLO has ever produced. This unusual time also caused us to be more introspective about the 'why' of OLLO. Why have we invested so much time and energy into a footwear brand that was so niche when we started? The answer is simple, we love a good challenge and love to create fun.

Where the Rubber Hits the Road. (Or Warped Wall)

Now that production has begun on the all-new OLLO Alpha, we are fine-tuning the rubber compound for the brand new Sapien X. We are aiming for a grip profile for the Sapien X that will make it the undisputed highest performance shoe available for Ninja Warrior and obstacle course competition. Our goal is to see the Sapien X on the feet of winning ninjas every time we tune in to American Ninja warrior! We have engaged a number of rubber experts, including the premium tire brand Michelin, to develop the formula that will put the OLLO Sapien X at the top of the list! Were getting close. The samples pictured below are on the way to be tested by some of the top Ninja Warrior athletes in the world.

Parkour and Freerunning Continue to Surge!

Newly reopened Betsy Head Park in Brooklyn is the first in NYC with a Parkour course. 

Brooklyn’s Betsy Head Park is now open to the public after a $30 million upgrade, which included the addition of the city’s first-ever Parkour course.

The upgrade of the 106-year-old park reimagines the two pieces of land that sit diagonally across Dumont Ave. to create a cohesive, inclusive and multi-generational green space.

In a press release, a spokesperson from Abel Bainnson Butz, LLP (ABB) Landscape Architects, who worked on the project with NYC Parks Department, said the vision was to provide a versatile experience for all ages and abilities, which met the current and changing needs of the community.



Meanwhile in France, the birthplace of Parkour- 

PLAYGONES, a playground equipment design and manufacturing firm, now offers ready to install Parkour and Freerunning parks to municipalities across Europe. These are exciting times for these emerging sports and the multitudes of participants who are engaged in them.

New Parkour & Ninja Warrior park opens in Paris!

Parkour was born in the suburbs of Paris and quickly spread throughout the world. So with the continued growth in participation and popularity of 'movement sports', it makes sense that a brand new outdoor training park, designed specifically with parkour, freerunning and ninja warrior athletes in mind, has just opened in Paris! Purpose designed parks like this currently number in the hundreds globally and continue to become a feature of the urban landscape in metropolitan areas on every continent. The Sapien X Prototype Gets Rave Reviews.

We recently sent 3rd round prototype pairs of the OLLO Sapien X to 6 professional American Ninja Warrior athletes for further testing. We made a final tweak to the rubber compound used in the outsole, and needed feedback. The athletes ran them through the course with a focus on the Spider Wall and Warped Wall - two obstacles that particularly challenge lateral stability and grip. HUGE leap is the feedback we got. (pun intended). We are very excited about the Sapien X as it's a technical and style evolution of our iconic Original Sapien and it looks like it's hitting the high marks we set for it! The true performance of any shoe begins with proper fit and form. The foundation of all footwear is the LAST, the form that shoes are built on.  OLLO worked closely with the fabled American last maker Jones & Vining to create custom lasts for the ALPHA and SAPIEN X. We discussed with them the needs of our athletes, how they move, and what demands they put on their shoes. They put their 90 years of knowledge and experience to work to create two masterfully rendered lasts. One to capture the dynamics of the ALPHA and the other to enhance the function of the SAPIEN X.
