Millions of people own nice, modern homes. But no matter how big or small they are, and no matter how simple or elaborate their architecture may be, the vast majority of these homes have the same basic stamped-metal garage doors on them.

Garage Skins Can Change Your Garage Doors Forever

Rick Medlen talks with the Carey Brothers about how Garage Skins are indistinguishable from a solid-wood $10,000 garage door.

The Pitch: Giving your garage a facelift with magnets

There are a lot of ways to spruce up the appearance of a house. Updating a tired garage door with a designer one is one sure way to boost curb appeal — and put a dent in the home improvement budget.

GarageSkins Give You a Wood Look without the Cost

Street facing metal garage doors are a tough design problem to overcome. But Rick Medlen of Creswell, OR who invented GarageSkins has the answer. This product will allow any homeowner with a standard metal overhead garage door to add the look of a real wood carriage house door in under an hour and for less than $1000.00

We at GarageSkins, Inc. want to thank everyone who has chosen to come along on this crazy journey.  Thanks to your investment and trust we are much closer to being able to commercially launch our amazing new concept into the retail home improvement marketplace.  Look for updates to come your way and of course we'll post our year-end financials once available.

If you have been watching this campaign but haven't yet invested, please don't miss out. Soon you'll see a GarageSkins system installed in your neighborhood and I don't want you to be that person that says "I wish I had..."

Happy New Year to everyone and I wish you all a great return on investment!

-Rick Medlen, CEO

GarageSkins, Inc.

Just 7 more days to invest in GarageSkins, Inc.!   We have chosen to end our equity crowd-funding phase and want thank everyone for their trust and commitment.  With our prototype phase completed and several GarageSkins systems soon in place throughout the US, we will be targeting high-net-worth investors and investment groups for the remainder of our start-up funding phase.  We'll post several updates as this progresses along with photos of the homes once the systems are in place.

Please consider taking advantage of these last 7 days to jump on board.  If everyone following this campaign invested just $1,000 we'd easily reach our launch target of $750,000 and begin building out production.

While we are not eliminating the possibility of re-launching another equity crowdfunding campaign in 2019, know that our goals for this campaign have been reached.  We have validated the concept by having over 350 people invest their hard-earned money into this venture.  And with over 1,300,000 social media responses and over 65,000 views of this campaign, it's now very clear that the home improvement marketplace has a real need for this product.

Once again I thank you for the trust and commitment to help move this venture forward.  I look forward to a great 2019!!

-Rick Medlen, CEO, GarageSkins, Inc.

Notice of Funds Disbursement

[The following is an automated notice from the StartEngine team].

As you might know, GarageSkins has exceeded its minimum funding goal. When a company reaches its minimum on StartEngine, it's about to begin withdrawing funds. If you invested in GarageSkins be on the lookout for an email that describes more about the disbursement process.

This campaign will continue to accept investments until its indicated closing date.

Thanks for funding the future.

As promised, I'm attaching our first round of testing results.  We are excited that the results proved very positive and only showed a couple of failure points that have been addressed and will be included in the next round of testing.

Here's a brief overview but please read the report in-depth.

  • A custom plan was used to try to realistically simulate the most taxing environmental climate in the US (South Florida)
  • A 24 hour cycle of humidity, temperature and UV exposure was cycled for 30 days with intermittent direct water spray simulating rainfall
  • Photos were taken weekly
  • Both light and dark stains were used to test color-fastness
  • The veneer used was 1.5mm radiata pine
  • Steel plates were used for mounting to simulate the steel garage door
  • See the full report here

Our results were great!  As the report details some of the panels were exposed to almost twice as much UV radiation as they would be on the worst day in south Florida and hence there was some significant discoloration of those panels.  A couple of the panels had the magnets oxidize and bleed into the veneer but epoxy coating on the magnets will cure that.

Our next test will place a much more realistic filter on the 4000-watt UV lights to accurately simulate the worst real world conditions.  We'll also switch to 0.5mm alder veneer as this will be our choice when we go into mass production for many reasons.  This test is scheduled to begin Jan 15th, 2019.

All in all, other than the massive UV exposure charring the wood panels (something that doesn't happen in the real world) our panels held up very well.  There was absolutely no delamination or any sign that the panel construction needed to be altered in any way.  We are confident that with the real-world UV exposure and the coated magnets, we will test out to be production-ready.[

Thanks for your investment $$ that can make all of this possible and stay tuned for more!!

As we enter this Thanksgiving season, we take a second to pause and look back at this year's accomplishments.  We've successfully:

  • Developed a quick-cure finish that will outlast the elements and provide great protection from the sun's UV rays
  • Partnered with a European wood processor to provide an almost unlimited supply of our specially-treated veneer
  • Secured commitment from a magnet manufacturer to provide any conceivable quantity we order
  • Successfully raised an additional $133,000 here on StartEngine
  • Begun conversations with high-net-worth investors to fully fund our production once certain milestones are met
  • Begun our first structured environmental stress test
  • Grown our waiting list from 2100 to 3600 through successful social media outreach
  • Identified a facility to house operations for our initial product build-out and launch
  • And most importantly, we had fun doing all of this!

I sincerely hope that everyone who is following our campaign and those who have invested have a wonderful, peace-filled time with friends and family this coming Thanksgiving and Christmas season.  While we all strive for success, it's the love and comfort of those around us that makes those efforts worthwhile.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!    -Rick Medlen, CEO, GarageSkins, Inc.

Environmental Testing Begins

We are excited to begin our environmental stress testing at Oregon State University's Wood Innovations Lab.  The GarageSkins panels have been mounted to steel plates to simulate a garage door, placed in a sealed temperature/humidity controlled chamber, and for the next 30 days will be blasted with UV while the temperature and humidity are fluctuated to simulate 1 year of south Florida climate.

With 1 week of testing under our belts the panels are holding up nicely.. we'll post the entire report here once it's complete.

Thanks to everyone for the trust, we are looking forward to validating our years of engineering work with this test.  More to come!

Notice of Material Change in Offering

[The following is an automated notice from the StartEngine team].

Hello! Recently, a change was made to the GarageSkins offering. Here's an excerpt describing the specifics of the change:

GarageSkins is extending their campaign.

When live offerings undergo changes like these on StartEngine, the SEC requires that certain investments be reconfirmed. If your investment requires reconfirmation, you will be contacted by StartEngine via email with further instructions.

Final Finish Engineering

Great news.. and the final piece of our puzzle is solved.

One of the largest challenges of creating an exterior wood product is engineering it to last many years without warping, fading or cracking.  And since our GarageSkins systems will eventually be sold all over the world, we have to make it stable in Alaska's winters and Arizona's summers.  This has created quite the challenge..

Our treated wood has eliminated problems from humidity fluctuations, but the UV from the sun is prone to fade wood quickly and create cracks throughout.  So our requirements for a final finish have been quite extensive and up until now elusive to everyone we've reached out to for an engineered product.  We need our finish to be:

Very lightweight - ease of installation

Very hard - outlasting basketballs and hail

Clear - the beauty of the wood should shine through

Luster finish - we targeted a hand-waxed furniture look

UV blocking - eliminating harmful UV rays in any climate

Quick-Curing  - we need to quickly cure this finish to keep up with demand

As you can see, this has been quite a task.  But I'm happy to report that we have partnered with a chemical company that manufactures exterior finishes for the aerospace industry.  After months of experimenting with different formulations, they have crafted just the right finish to keep your GarageSkins systems both protected and looking beautiful.  And even better it can be applied and cured in a production line environment!

All great stuff, we'll post the test results once complete but so far after 2 months in the 100 degree heat and humidity fluctuations from 30-70%, absolutely nothing to report.  Meaning we are confident that this finish will test out perfectly and provide the final piece of the puzzle!

If you have invested, thank you, and if you haven't but are "following" this campaign, remember that if every one of the 572 followers we have invested just $1,000, we'd push over the top and begin manufacturing efforts.

As always, post comments and I'll get them answered quickly.

Great Validation for HOA Acceptance!!!

Hi all!  Wanted to share an email we received from a future GarageSkins customer:

"Hi friends! Just wondering when your product will be available!? We are remodeling our 90’s red brick, white metal garage door home and would LOVE to put this on our home! I presented this to our HOA and got approved, they don’t believe me that it’s an overlay! Please let me know, there’s other companies out there but yours is my favorite!! Thank you" 😊  - Laurel D. (shared with permission)

We've had several social media comments that an HOA would never allow this to be in their neighborhoods, but our experience so far has been that most are very accepting of anything that would upgrade the appearance of the exterior of their neighborhoods without detracting from the value of other homes.

Thanks!! -Rick

Douglass and Suzanne, yes! After the progress was brought to a dead standstill by the pandemic, we've been fortunate enough to raise $1.2M in just the past month, and are leasing 60,000 sq ft of production space in Post Falls, ID with product anticipated for retail sales July 2021. Can't wait! Douglass (and other investors) we'll get a more detailed update out in the next couple of weeks. I appreciate the continued interest, our waiting list has grown to over 11,000! -Rick

I’m in ! Let’s dominate the market . I see a lot of growth with the economical logo garage skins . Also amazon has only rinkydink magnetic black Widows for garage doors and hardware that’s it . I spent way too much money on Amazon I suggest we look into selling garage skins thru them also . The future is bright looking forward to it .

Really like this product but, this statement under the "Terms" is a concern for me as a potential investor. "There is not now and likely will not be a public market for our stock."

Orlando Alegria

can these panels be installed on wood doors as well? or just metal

Tracy Spencer

Does this product have any kind of theft deterrent? Can it be easily be pulled off or vandalized?

So if you don't reach the desired $750,000 - a large target, then what as far as those of us who have invested? You should have mentioned that amount in your initial presentation here when this all started. Wishing you good luck though as an investor myself.

At the close of an offering, all investors whose funds have “cleared” by this time will be included in the disbursement. At this time, each investor will receive an email from StartEngine with their Countersigned Subscription Agreement, which will serve as their proof of purchase moving forward.

Please keep in mind that a company can conduct a series of “closes” or withdrawals of funds throughout the duration of the campaign. If you are included in that withdrawal period, you will be emailed your countersigned subscription agreement and proof of purchase immediately following that withdrawal.

StartEngine assists companies in raising capital, and once the offering is closed, we are no longer involved with whether the company chooses to list shares on a secondary market, or what occurs thereafter. You may want to contact a financial professional to discuss possible investment outcomes.

For Regulation Crowdfunding, investors are able to cancel their investment at any point throughout the campaign up until 48 hours before the closing of the offering. However, every investment needs to go through the clearing process in order to get sent back to the account associated with the investment.

Both Title III (Regulation Crowdfunding) and Title IV (Reg A+) help entrepreneurs crowdfund capital investments from unaccredited and accredited investors.
