Bringing Bikes up to Speed Through Personalization

Invest in Bike Friday (dba of Green Gear Cycling Inc.)

"There are a total of 1 billion vehicles on the road globally—with a projected total of 1.7 billion expected by the year 2035. There is no denying the dwindling air quality or the negative impacts of motor vehicle reliance for individual and global health.

Yet we still keep driving cars. What gives?

Well, for starters, individual cars can carry a lot of cargo (think people and stuff), reach great distances, and can (theoretically) get people to their destinations quickly. That's a daily fact, right? Wrong. In many cities these days a car is not the most convenient or effective way to get around.

Enter a simple, elegant, and wholly remarkable machine: the bicycle. The answer for convenient, reliable, and sustainable personal transportation.

Bike Friday is an organic company in the truest sense of the word. Everything that Bike Friday represents today, the focus on community and relationships, the commitment to sustainability, the insistence on high performance and the unending push for bicycle improvements comes from a foundation that shouts “We love Bicycles & how they improve, rather than degrade community!”

We have learned a lot in 25 years. At Bike Friday, we approach life a little differently. Compared to most manufacturers, our whole process runs backward, starting with you, the customer, and then building your bike to fit your body, your lifestyle and your riding style.

A Little History:

Bike Friday started with the intention to sell completely through bike dealers but they told us we were crazy, "no one would pay $750 for a folding bike!". They were wrong. More than 35,000 people have happily paid that, or more, for a high performance folding bike built just for them.

So what made us successful? Three key things:

  • A totally unique product
  • Amazing, adventurous customers and our relationship with them
  • Our manufacturing process

Bike Friday co-founders have designed many world's firsts:

  1. First Suitcase Travel Bike - The New World Tourist
  2. First Custom Folding Tandem - The Two'sDay
  3. Most Adjustable Cargo Bike - The Haul-a-Day
  4. Lightest Performance Folding Bike - The pakiT

We start with listening to the needs of each customer, then we build the bike. Our customers have toured almost every continent on full expeditions with their bikes, referring new customers to us from around the world, and inspiring others to join the adventure.

From day one we have built our bicycles by using Lean Manufacturing, a.k.a. the Toyota Production System. This system avoids excess inventory, delivers just-in-time, and is what allowed us to grow a business from pocket change. We did not begin with a large infusion of investment capital or the benefits of 18 month lead times like most of the bike business. We began building prototype bikes on a coffee table in the living room of a friend, with down-payments made on good faith, paying ourselves next to nothing, and surviving for months at a time only on Ramen noodles. From our humble beginnings we have built an internationally recognized brand, a company that has paid American workers living wages for 25 years, and a community of intrepid cyclists who push the boundaries every day of what is possible on a bicycle.

"Together we can create a more sustainable and just planet with tools for a cycling lifestyle. Will you join us?"

-Hanna Scholz, President

The Opportunity

Why we are raising working capital now:

Our unique, direct-to-cyclist, business model gave us the means to start from nothing and made us experts in personalized service. We have developed a highly efficient production process, and highly skilled team that can build your personal bike just as you want it. However this model which brought us so much initial success, has hit a ceiling and it's time to evolve. The dealers don't think we are crazy anymore, but we need inventory to serve their business model needs.

Addressing the Problem of Seasonality:

Its time to change a core piece of our structure by adding more working capital and pre-built bikes to our offering.

Every year bike sales spike in the spring and summer and flatten in the fall and winter. What this has meant for us as a just-in-time manufacturer is that we can't keep up with demand in the spring and summer and we don't have the working capital we need in the fall and winter to optimize our purchasing, make improvements, develop new dealer channels and design new products.

We have realized that not all customers care as much about a full custom bike as they do about a high quality bike that delivers in 2 weeks in the spring and summer. Our long lead times caused by the need to special order parts in season mean we can't serve these less custom-focused customers very well.

The Solution:

  1. Develop unique bikes that give personalized experience we can pre-build in winter, when we have capacity, for quick delivery in the spring. We can better service customers wanting fast turn around and less personalization. This is a big step.
  2. Get enough working capital to support planning 1 year ahead for purchasing and building inventory in the winter on certain bikes, develop new products, and acquire more dealers.

Progress so far:

  1. The first step has been accomplished with the design and successful Kickstarter launch of the Haul-a-Day and the pakiT. Their frames can be pre-built in the winter for quick finish and delivery in the spring. Customers have been happy with them and we have had to turn away many customer this year who we could not deliver fast enough for their needs.
  2. Now we need working capital for the second step. We are offering stock in Bike Friday/Green Gear Cycling Inc. to raise this capital.

It may not be the way most companies would do it. But we have learned that working closely with our customers to build what is needed and discover what should be changed has been essential for our success and survival.

We have proven we can make great bikes, can innovate and respond to customers. With your investment, we can continue delivering the best customizable bicycles on the market, as well as jump into new product development and gain the working capital model to allow us to plan and build up for optimum expansion even with seasonal cycles.

Our Impact Begins With Family

The world is a sum of many parts--including people. Lots, and lots of people— 7.4 billion to be exact.  We'd like to think of our planet as being comprised of one big (okay, enormous) family. Unfortunately, the family is so huge and disconnected that its future appears fraught with peril.

But what if we could begin building families of bicyclists to inform and inspire global communities to adopt greener lifestyles with healthier families?

That's exactly what the Scholz family has done with Bike Friday.

Brothers and Bike Friday Co-founders Hanz and Alan come from a background deep in the bicycle lifestyle and filled with innovation. They loved riding and racing bikes with their friends and family on the plains of North Dakota as youngsters. As the two got older, they became increasingly serious about touring and competing. In 1971, Alan won 2nd place in the USA Road Nationals, and by the age of 20, Hanz had won many state championships (over 25 individual events).

Their combined love of touring and sports riding led the Scholz brothers to design and build some of the world’s first racing tandems under the name ATP (Advanced Training Products). Alan also took this love forward into his young family and invented the first Burley Trailer for his daughter Hanna when she was 6 months old. Alan co-founded Burley Design Co-op.

Hanna Scholz, daughter of Alan, along with Alan are now the guiding forces at Bike Friday and are using the experience and wisdom from 25 years of customer-focused bike innovation to offer what the next generation needs to live an active, sustainable, mobile lifestyle.

"We are inspired by the unmatched efficiency and elegant impact that a human choosing to ride a bike has for the world community. We, at Bike Friday, want to help make our world a more beautiful place one high quality, personalized and versatile bike at a time."

-Hanna and Alan Scholz

The Scholz's impact does not stop with bikes, and neither should yours. However, bikes are a pretty great (and fun) way to start leading a more sustainable lifestyle and the gateway to a greener global community.

Our Commitment to Your Health & Global Sustainability

We believe the bicycle is one of the worlds best inventions. We love bicycles. Human scale, health enhancing, highly social, low global impact, extremely economical, low maintenance, approachable, and friendly. In this fast modern world, bicycles are still the most efficient transportation ever designed. A bicycle can and should be integrated into most people’s lives because of the health, social, environmental and economic benefits it supplies.

A bicycle amplifies you as a person. It boosts self-esteem. It makes you more capable, stronger, more outgoing, and healthier, but it must be there when you need it wherever you are in the world. It must be easy to take with you. That is Bike Friday.

Manufacturers are often associated with pollution and waste. Putting economic values over the good of the communities in which they reside. Polluting the air and water, but more astoundingly, poisoning the people who work for them and buy from them. What happens to the generations that come after us? What kind of world will they inherit?

At Green Gear/Bike Friday we are doing our part to be a solution instead of part of the problem. We have made many choices over the years that could have had many different results if we didn’t consciously decide on the benign. Some examples of this are:

  • 90% of what we build is to a customer order, no waste in unsellable inventory.
  • Our frames are all made of Chromoly Steel partly because it is easier to recycle than other more exotic metals. It is superior in other ways as well.
  • We use powder coat to paint our bikes as it is much more environmentally benign than wet paint, more durable and healthier for our team to work with.
  • We have a trade-in program that allows Bike Friday owners to trade-in their old Bike Fridays and get money for their new Bike Friday. We refurbish the old bike and sell it as pre-loved.

We strongly believe that a bicycle culture is a healthy culture and therefore the presence of bicycles, or lack thereof, is a good ecological and social indicator of the health of a city or country.

The Global Demand for Folding Bikes is on the Rise

As a whole, the global bicycle market is expected to reach an estimated $34.9 billion by 2022 and is forecast to grow at a rate of 2.7% from 2017 to 2022, according to a recent market report

Due to the increasing costs of automobile transportation, and greater awareness of the benefits of global sustainability more people across the world are adopting a car-free lifestyle and relying on bicycles to get from point A to point B.

The Family Tandem disassembles to fit into a car trunk or other small space

Design Philosophy: Build tools that support our customers to live healthy active lives

"The bicycle is an important mechanical solution to modern man’s environs and therefore requires — and deserves — our best continuing efforts as designers to integrate it for the pleasure and the specific needs of each individual’s lifestyle.

We know as innovators that all prototypes do not work as expected. The good ideas pay for the rest. You can’t tell in advance if ideas work or which are the good ones. So don’t hesitate to try new ideas. If it is the first time, then it can’t be wrong. There can be no wrong for creating the first of something. So do it right the second time. Do it fast the first time.

We believe customers are the main purpose of a company. Much of business, and design especially is done backward, with, it seems to us, the customers' input last. We’re not Vulcans but we think that is illogical. We believe in not re-inventing the wheel, but trying to build on the shoulders of the giants before. To read, study, listen, share, test, and record."

Customer Service Philosophy:

Use the golden rule. Treat others as we would like to be treated. Make decisions based on doing the right thing for the situation not policy.

- The Scholz Brothers, Hanz and Alan

Customer Testimonials

“I waited three months for my bike, and when it came it was the happiest day of my life. I have a titanium Brompton, and I'm pretty used to how it handles, but when I got on the pakiT there was an immediate difference, it instantly fit the contours of my body, and I'm riding faster because of it. I use Strava and I'm averaging 2-3 miles faster on the pakiT.”

Newton Dixon Jr.

"Over several years I have acquired several folding bikes. I have a Brompton and a Tikit and now an 11 speed pakit Elite. The pakit is by far the lightest and most elegant design. The 11 speed Shimano Alfine hub works flawlessly and has 11 useful evenly spaced gears. It has a titanium seat tube mast which has the unexpected benefit of some flexibility and shock absorption. It weighs just under 20 pounds which is several pounds less than either the Brompton or TIkit. It rides beautifully. It is a pleasure to carry due to its light weight and clean greaseless Gates belt drive. Overall it is a winner. It is a great evolution from the Brompton and Tikit."

-Jay Robinow

"I got my orange HaD as part of the Kickstarter.com campaign. I was looking for a cargo bike to replace my car for short errands and was stoked to find one made in Eugene. What I didn't expect was a bike that's so much fun to ride! My HaD recently carried 30 lbs of dog food, 24 canning jars and 12 rolls of toilet paper and more, in one run. With its 20" wheels, the load stays low so the bike doesn't sway back and forth when you stand on the pedals, and it gets rolling really easily. I've enjoyed fine-tuning the fit with the highly adjustable frame and figuring the best ways to carry different loads. I now have two Ortlieb panniers for our rainy winter weather on one side and the HaD sling on the other, with a cooler bag stashed inside for quick grocery runs. So far, so good. There are very few things I'd change about this bike, and it's definitely working to keep my car cold and lonely. Thanks Bike Friday!"

How We'll Use Your Investment

New Sales Hires

We see a clear correlation between the number of salespeople making calls and total sales. Some portion of the increased proceeds would be used to increase our sales force from 3 to 4 and based on those results, to 5 or even more.

Engineering R&D

The company currently relies on a single engineer, the founder, for all new concepts as well as research and engineering for those concepts. We would use part of the proceeds to hire one additional engineer. This would speed up the ability of the company to utilize the existing proven talents of the founder to identify and develop additional products and bring them to market.

Strategic Planning
While the company will be focused like a laser on short term profits, some portion of the proceeds may be used for carefully managed strategic risks that could result in reduced profits in some quarters. Any such investments in personnel, equipment, tooling, or advertising would be measured against the potential rewards, limited in scope, and only continued based on meeting clear objectives.

Electric Expansion

One example of such an investment might be to take advantage of the electric bicycle market. While the company has already invested time and talent in researching and testing a electric assist front wheel that can be used with existing products and as an aftermarket sale, other approaches to electric powered and electric assisted bikes will receive more attention depending on the total amount of the final stock sales.

Consignment Expansion

Competitors are placing bikes in retail shops on consignment. The company might use some portion of the funding to test the consignment approach.

Rental / Leasing Expansion

There is a developing business in leasing/renting folding and/or electric assist bikes. The company might use some portion of the funding to test market a rental or leasing approach.

Sales at Large Retailers

Major big box sporting goods stores are currently carrying folding and electric bikes. The company may use some of the funds to underwrite the inventory build and accounts receivable necessary to support sales to companies like REI Coop, Dicks Sporting Goods, and West Marine.

Why Your Investment Matters

We have accomplished what many would say is “impossible” for a manufacturer. Our unique, direct-to-cyclist, business model gave us the means to start from nothing and made us experts in personalized service. Along the way, we've developed a highly efficient production process, a world class manufacturing facility, and a uniquely skilled team that can build you the bike of your dreams.

One challenge of our current business model is that we rely on the upfront deposits of customers as our working capital. This system allowed us to create a business, virtually, out of thin air. However, it's also kept us from growing, as bicycle sales are highly seasonal. This spring, like many before it, we had to turn business away. The solution? Build certain bicycles into inventory during the off-season to sell during the peak demand. We have learned that some customers value quick delivery more than full customization, especially Haul-a-Day and pakiT customers. We do not serve these customers without pre-built bikes currently in inventory.

Our facility is physically capable of up to 10 times its current output. We need to be fully capitalized in order to take full advantage of the current significant market opportunities. Your investment will allow us to handle seasonality and market shocks with strength and ease, maximize our profitability, and buffer the financial constraints of bulk component purchases from Asia.

With your investment we will also be able to finish development of mid-price range electric assist kit, retrofit-table to all of our bikes. Additionally, we plan to market our increased production capabilities to U.S. dealers in the form of a cross country road show with a vehicle full of our hottest selling bikes.

There is so much we hope to achieve — your investment can make a difference for the future of cyclists and the Earth!

New: Bike Friday announces pakiT ultralight folding bike
August 24, 2016

Bike Friday recently announced the launch of the pakiT, a folding bike that weighs between 15 and 22 pounds and fits in a backpack for easy transport and travel. The pakiT debuted on Kickstarter and surpassed its fundraising goal within seven hours.

Learning to Navigate the Windy City on Two Wheels- With Two Kids
May 29, 2015

Well hello, everybody. We’ve been busy- enjoying pleasant weather and lots of fun rides. As you can see, my husband is totally digging this “his and hers” cargo bike thing we have going on, and so are the kids. And so am I. We’ve covered a lot of miles in the past week. The pictures might be a bit out of order, but I’ll share what we have here. We bought a Fuji waterproof camera awhile ago at Costco, and the kids have been my designated photographers, which is cool.

The Ultimate Bike Friday New World Tourist Review
June 29, 2009

The Bike Friday New World Tourist is thought by some to be the ultimate travel bike for long distance tourists. It’s small wheelbase, low-step over feature, fully-loaded capabilities and its ability to fold up and fit inside an airline standard suitcase (thus saving you huge amounts of money when flying with your bicycle) are certainly appealing features for any world traveler. But does the bike really live up to its reputation? That’s what I set out to see! Here’s my story: I purchased a Bike Friday New World Tourist in the summer of 2008 and used it on a short 8-day trip to the island of Aruba in the Caribbean Sea. I had purchased the bike, planning to use it on similar short trips and never planned on using the small-wheeled folding bike as my ultimate travel vehicle for a 9-month tour through central and eastern Europe. But that’s exactly what happened.

Bike Friday Haul-a-Day Review
September 28, 2015

The Haul-a-Day is Bike Friday’s addition to the growing cargo bike market. Bike Friday is an Oregon-based bike building company who use words like local, organic, community, and handcraft to describe what they do. They specialize in custom folding and travel bikes, which means the Haul-a-Day has many of the inventive conveniences of those types of bikes and can be customized to your desire.

Emerging Gear: Outdoor Products This Week
July 11, 2017

The pakiT City Bike is about as portable as a bicycle can get. The $1,500 foldable ride comes in six sizes, accommodates riders up to 190 lbs., and folds into a soft-side backpack in about 30 seconds (according to the company). Best of all, it’s a belt drive, so no greasy mess.

The pakiT may be the most compromise-free folding bike yet
August 29, 2016

Folding bikes have many advantages over regular bikes; you can take them to your office or your apartment instead of leaving them locked up somewhere else; you can go multimodal and mix a bike ride in with a train, car or plane trip. But they are also often a compromise in ride quality and comfort, and are often not as portable as one would like.

Happy Friday, everyone!

This is the last weekend before our equity campaign offering closes early next week.

Thank you to all who have helped increase the funding raise over this past week!  We crossed the $175k mark and are aiming for that $200k mark by the end of Monday. Please continue spreading the word with friends for this crucial home stretch!

The values of folding bikes is being discovered more and more in cities across America. Below is an interesting article to share on becoming a folding bike convert from a recent Bicycling Magazine post: https://www.bicycling.com/culture/i-carried-a-folding-bike-everywhere

Thank you all for your continued support. Have an awesome weekend!

4 days left- Inventory is already flying off the shelves before it hits the shelves!

In response to the early campaign success we began to build Haul-a-Days into inventory as we start the transition to the fall season. So far each time we make a spot in production to add another Haul-a-Day a customer or dealer has called up and bought the bike before it leaves the production line. We have had 4 this week already!

This continues to prove there is a large opportunity to increase our sales to customers and dealers who need immediate delivery as long as we have bikes ready to ship in a week or less. The more inventory we make of these key items the more we will sell.

We are already putting the $168K raised on this campaign to good use and it is paying off!

Please keep spreading the word about this investment opportunity as the more Working Capital we raise here now, the bigger inventory we are able to build this winter in preparation for a strong spring profit!

Thank you for all your support and happy riding,

Hanna and the Bike Friday Team

5 days left... what investors say about us!

Hi everyone!

We've been so lucky to have such strong support for our StartEngine campaign, here are some of the things that our investors have said:

"I’m a fan of Hanna and the whole Scholz family. I’ve been a Bike Friday owner since 1994 and have collected a garage full of wonderful Bike Fridays. Go, Hanna–the best days are ahead!" -Bruce H.

"Keep Trucking BF Friends! Wish I could jump in with more than my amount- every little bit counts though. I've been watching your company since 2007, keeping a BF bike at the top of my wishlist. I really love the community spirit and made in America know- how your company engenders." -Rita B.

"Hello Wonderful Bike Friday People, I love my bike and, more importantly, love the mission of your company. I hope, even if you sell the company, that your commitment to the planet through bikes never wavers. I invested $500 and wish it could be more. I am a teacher, so I don't have more than $500 right now. But I am glad to be a small part of your investment endeavor. My daughter, who is 11, and I just started biking to school (she now attends the middle school where I teach), and even though she was quite anxious about biking with cars, she is now beyond excited to cycle to school and, recently, to the mall. She has asked me for car-free dad/daughter days. I am a single parent now, but my late wife was the first one to introduce me to longer-distance biking, which we even did while dating. I am fortunate to be able to carry on the tradition. I even bought my son a bike for his sophomore year in college at Oregon, because he is living in an off-campus apartment. He is not yet as excited as his younger sister, but, hey, cycling conversions happen one spoke at a time, so to speak. Good luck with this campaign and please keep me posted"  -Steven F.

Just a few more days left for you to Invest and spread the word about us so we can reach more people and make more happy customers!

6 Days Left - How You Can Benefit From This Investment

There are only six days left to invest in Bike Friday's vision for sustainable transportation solutions. We've had a number of inquires about the benefits of investing in this campaign, which is very understandable, equity investing online is so new that most people haven't done it before. Here are several ways that you can benefit from this investment:

1. Brag to your friends that you are supporting American Manufacturing Jobs

2. You get a discount for life on anything at Bike Friday for investments $1,000 and more

3. Your stock can be sold at a profit if Bike Friday grows

4. There is a new online marketplace provided by StartEngine, called Secondary, where you can sell* your stocks to others

5. As Bike Friday increases it's profitability from implementing our campaign expansion plans, we may then pay dividends to investors/stockholders

Only 6 Days Left!

We are near the end of the campaign and need you, our most loyal fans and customers, to help us hit a home run. We've raised enough to make some important changes, but the closer we get to 500K the more we can improve our product offerings, decrease our lead times, and increase our profitability for 2018. If you believe in American Made, a product that helps the environment, and empowering female leaders then this is your opportunity to join something big and make a difference in the world all while doing something that also benefits you personally.

Happy Cycling,

Hanna Scholz and the Bike Friday team

One Week Left!

Hi Bike Friday Fans,

Today marks one week remaining in this investment offering. First thank you for helping raise $165,000 of working capital so far! We now need your help again to spread the word to raise another $50,000+ in the next 7 days. The more working capital we raise the faster we can implement the improvements and changes as well as fully take advantage of this winter for building inventory to sell in spring 2018.

We are pleased to have a grand total of 125 investors and over $165,000 of investments so far, and every day more people are joining.

You are helping to bring convenient, sustainable transportation solutions to everyone and support Built in the USA!

Happy Cycling,

P.S. I'm loving the new Mid-Drive e-assist system for my Haul-a-Day! Just yesterday we went out to pick plums, we were able to pick 55 lbs., and the bike handled it beautifully over our ten+ miles of riding. The new Mid-Drive gave me all the support that I needed on the hills to barley notice that I was hauling anything at all! We can't wait to get this new system out to you, you're going to love it. Video and photos below!

The Cargo Flex bags are great for accommodating all sorts of loads, even heavy flats of fresh fruit!

Customers fuel our eBike growth PLUS: How to increase the value of your investment

We recently received this great note from Bike Friday owner Nickie Augustine about why she loves her electric assist:

Michael I am so thrilled with my bike Friday as it is now with the BionX upgrade. I can actually ride with my husband and zip by him on the hills. I would never have guessed this was our schedule to do a 20 mile pleasure ride and not be wasted after the ride for the day.

I stay in good shape and feel fortunate to have such good health as a 78 year old woman. Nothing can stop me now.

Now I can ride to my heart's content. We're leaving for Vancouver island Sunday and anxious to be able to use the bike and keep the RV at the camp site.

Sincerely,

Nickie Augustine

Now it's important to note that Nickie's upgrade was a retrofit, meaning she purchased her bicycle previously and sent it back to have the e-assist installed. Bike Friday has over 30,000 bicycles out there on the road, and less than one hundred currently have e-assist. The vast majority of Bike Friday owners are Baby Boomers, many of whom have the same needs as Nickie - keeping up, help on the hills, avoiding overexertion, plus wanting to ride farther and more often.

Over the next year, we project 40 per month or about 500 unit sales of e-assist retrofits to existing customers, or approximately $500,000. And that's not even taking into account the sales to new customers driven by the prospect of e-assist to purchase built up bikes with e-assist already installed. We project first year sales of at least 300 bikes which would equal approximately $600,000 - $900,000 in new sales.

Our expectations of reaching these sales levels depends on our raising enough capital to finish the testing and development. We also need capital to adequately build the inventory and hire the labor that would allow us to fully launch more e-assist options at attractive price points. We believe that there will be excellent demand for these retrofits over the off season, and we are working towards having the ability to retrofit all Bike Fridays this winter 2017.

eBikes are Booming

We would like to report even more evidence of the market demand for e-assist on Bike Friday product. We have seen a strong response to our call for Mid-Drive Haul-a-Day Beta Testers last week. We, literally cannot keep up with the requests coming in from would-be early adopters eager to be the first to get their hands (and feet) on this new system. We have started a waiting list and will be going through it to find the best matched candidates. Interested investors should keep the inquiries coming. You might be just the rider we're looking for! Remember that you get a special discount for life on all Bike Fridays when you invest $1,000 or more in stock. Email info@bikefriday.com to get your name on the list for Beta Testing.

How to Increase the Value of your Investment

For those of you who are newly minted owners of Bike Friday, you have a unique opportunity to add value to your investment. The greater the capital raise on this StartEngine campaign, the faster we can begin to make improvements to our company structure, the more deeply we can invest in long-term strategic opportunities, the greater our profitability will be and, ultimately, the more valuable your investment. With this campaign closing soon, it's time to rally and end strong. We need your help, your passion, your belief in our company's mission (“our” means all of us now!) to drive more investment into our campaign. We invite you to reach out to your friends, family, co-workers, and anyone else who you think is aligned with the values and mission of Bike Friday to join us and become part of the company. We can do this, because we're better together!

Progress update on e-assist Haul-a-Day Stage 3

Now that we have entered the next step in developing a full range of electric assist for the Bike Friday line we wanted to share our next goals and plans:

There are two immediate and distinct markets for Bike Friday electric assist products:

  • Retrofit existing Bike Friday Bikes – There are over 30,000 Bike Friday’s in the world, and many owners are potential candidates for a retrofit. The target price range of $995 - $1295 per kit would not only work on existing BikeFriday bikes, but also on some other bikes in the market.
  • An electric assist version of each bike currently in our line. Our goal is to be able to offer these bikes starting at $2500.

Our previous experience with e-assist is pointing to the next development steps we are taking. We are adding the missing options in order to go to market with a full line of electric assist products:

  • We are already offering a great BionX Electric Assist kit for the Haul-a-Day, New World Tourist, and Tandems. However, the price for the kit itself starts at $1,800 and this makes a bike and kit price start at $3,050. People love the BionX but the entry price point is to high for many people to get started.
  • We have already started offering a great assist kit for the pakiT that starts at $1,290 for the kit. We believe that this bike is going to be a huge winner for many reasons, not the least of which is the stackable batteries which makes this the only system that can be taken onboard commercial airlines. Watch this 3 minute video of the e-pakiT fly to Costa Rica.
  • We are currently working on modifications to the design of this pakiT e-assist system to make it compatible with other Bike Fridays.

Next Steps: This week our founder, inventor, and engineer, Alan, set up Hanna's Haul-a-Day with a new mid-drive, electric assist kit for testing. He has been riding his own similarly equipped bike this summer and now it’s time for the next stage of testing. This mid-drive kit promises a price point below $1,300 which would accomplish our price point goal for the Haul-a-Day.

Hanna has taken her first ride this week and loves it! She says "It climbs like a mountain goat and makes me feel strong even after a long day!"

We are very excited about the possibilities of this new system under development! As we continue to test and refine this new mid-drive system we will be sure to keep you posted with updates as to its release schedule and plans. Other motors, batteries, and controllers are being evaluated as possible components for variations of electric assist on each of our bikes.

ALSO

We are currently seeking beta testers to try out this experimental new mid-drive system. To learn more about becoming a beta tester for Bike Friday fill out this form.

We have a treasure trove of ideas for products that will drive more sales. The current success of this campaign provides us with the seed capital to move the electric assist project forward. However, the more capital raised in this campaign, the faster we can complete the testing and development process for these electric assist kits!

Happy Cycling Adventures,

Hanna, Alan and the Bike Friday Team

P.S. Here's an overview of all the current stages of development of our e-assist offerings

Bike Friday Eyes eBike Market in US and Asia

On fire! That is the only way to describe the current US eBike business.

While much of the US bicycle business has been in a slump, one category is showing good growth: eBikes. By some estimates, electric bike sales grew as much as 70% in 2016 and may have reached 250,000 units. Based on researching the current state of the market we believe that combining electric assist capability with our folding, utility, and tandem bikes is a niche we can fully leverage. If Bike Friday were to capture even .5% of the US market in 2018, annual sales of eBikes could reach 1200 units or $2.5M in sales, doubling our current sales. This is also an opportunity for Bike Friday to take advantage of clear interest from our 30,000 Bike Friday owners in offering electric assist kits that can be retrofitted on existing Bike Fridays as well as new bikes.

To take advantage of this growing opportunity we have undertaken a multi-stage project with the goal of a complete line of electric assist products. We've completed the first two stages, and because of the great success of our StartEngine campaign we now have the resources to really dive into stage three. But before we get to the latest developments, here's a quick overview of what we've done so far.

Stage 1

The first stage of this development was a partnership with BionX to provide a robust e-assist system for all of our 406 wheeled bicycles (the New World Tourist, Pocket Llama, Haul-a-Day, and Family Tandem).

The Haul-a-Day cargo bike equipped with BionX e-assist

The BionX system uses a brushless, DC, rear hub motor and can be fitted with either a 6 amp hour or 11 amp hour, 48 volt battery. The system has an impressive pedal-assist feature that monitors your pedal stroke and seamlessly adds power at just the right moment. The amount of boost is determined entirely by the rider, with 4 levels in total. The setup even includes a little red button to give you full power without any pedaling! A backlit LCD display screen shows you your battery life, level of assist, speed, and distance. Another great feature of the BionX is its regenerative braking- great for use as a drag brake, especially on tandems.

Stage 2

Alan Scholz, Co-founder of Bike Friday and Lead Engineer, in combination with eBike experts Grin Technologies, has come up with an outstanding e-assist system for the pakiT- the LiGo system. The LiGo system is revolutionary for traveling as it is the only electric assist battery that you can easily ship and fly in an airplane legally!

The pakiT with the LiGo e-assist system from Grin Technologies

The pakiT with the LiGo system easily converts between e-assist and non e-assist, it’s lightweight even for an e-bike, and its unique battery system allows it to be safely transported on airplanes– because each battery is under 100Wh it meets the safety requirements of most airlines. The system has a Bafang G01 Front Hub Motor that delivers 250-500W of power at a top speed of 18 mph for up to 20-30 miles on a single charge, with a 2+ hour charge time. Speed levels are controlled by a combination of a twist-grip throttle and the Ezee LED console.  And because weight is a determinant factor for many, we’ve designed the heaviest parts of the system to be easily removed in under 4 minutes. It’s practically like having two bikes in one- a light weight folder and a speedy e-bike!

Watch this great video of a pakiT with LiGo e-assist!

Stage 3

The current stage of electric-assist development at Bike Friday is the creation of a mid-drive system to round out our offerings. Alan has identified the market, selected outstanding suppliers of motors, batteries and controls, and alpha tested several products over the past year. With the surge of enthusiasm and support from our StartEngine campaign, we now have the resources to begin beta testing our latest systems. Just this week Alan took Hanna's Haul-a-Day off to install the electric assist system. We always test new products on ourselves first, we love being guinea pigs!

Here's Hanna handing off her bike to Alan to electrify:

Stay tuned for more electric assist development updates with more details on our goals and findings very soon!

Why Business Ethics Matter

Business ethics really do matter to my family and Bike Friday, it's been essential for earning and maintaining the trust of our customers over the last 25 years.

This week we received a mention from Silicon Valley management consultant, author and blogger Dave Gardner. In his 25 years consulting Dave has seen it all- the good, the bad, and the unethical. In a recent post on his blog, davegardner.biz, Dave weighs in on some of the recent ethics scandals (think Equifax) by comparing them to companies like Bike Friday. In fact, this is what Dave had to say about working with us during a 2012 recall:

"The president of Bike Friday contacted me after reading my book about mass customization. I looked at his web site. The web site mentioned a recall on certain bike configurations for a potential issue that could cause harm to the rider. The web site told the customers what they needed to do to initiate corrective action. Customers were also notified by mail. Bike Friday paid all of the costs for this potential problem. I knew when I saw this, this was a company I wanted to work with. Why? Bike Friday demonstrated a lot of integrity by the way they handled this."

Recent customer reports: around the world with a pakiT

In the last few weeks a number of Bike Friday owners have sent us photos of their adventures with their pakiT bicycles. We are always excited to see the incredible places people go and the impressive things that they do with the bicycles we build.

We designed the pakiT to be the ultimate city bike - a nimble, clean, lightweight commuter, but our customers are pushing the boundaries and taking it so much further.

Just back from Europe, pakiT owner Newton D. took his bike on an “impossible” ride- an unguided solo tour on rural backroads through Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia!

"I feel like I won the race of a lifetime with that bike, it's not just a bike, it's a part of me now!  Even in the rain and tough roads, she held up, I got a lot more out of the bike than I ever thought I would."

-Newton D.

*Note: We didn't design the pakiT for off road (or intend to warranty it for that) but once we build the bike people are getting so excited they are taking it everywhere!

Professional photographer and pakiT owner Aaron Lim takes his pakiT with him to photo shoots all over the world!

The pakiT in Amoudi Bay, Santorini, Greece

The pakiT in Signapore

A gorgeous forest path in Singapore

The pakiT is one of the two models that we've designed to be able to build into inventory. By streamlining its design and how its manufactured we are able to leverage seasonal fluctuations, converting them from dead time into valuable stock building opportunities. This summer we, literally, had to turn customers away because we could not build enough pakiTs and Haul-a-Days to keep up with demand. We have a great product that people love and we have a plan to meet the demand, all we need now is the working capital to bridge the gap.

Our campaign is well on its way to generating the capital needed to make this core change to our company's structure. Help us to take this important step and evolve our business by sharing our campaign with your friends and family.

Amending our Securities Offering

Hello! Recently, a change was made to the Bike Friday offering. Here's an excerpt describing the specifics of that change:

Issuer has updated their financials with an independent account review as Exhibit B of the Offering Details document and increased the maximum funding goal to $1,070,000.

When live offerings undergo changes like these on StartEngine, the SEC requires that certain investments be reconfirmed. If your investment requires reconfirmation, you will be contacted by StartEngine via email with further instructions.

We've hit 100K in 6 days— Now it's time for the next big goal

We're happily surprised to have hit our $100K goal in just 6 days! Wow, that went fast! Thank you to everyone who got us here! There are smiles on our faces and tears in our eyes to see such strong support for what we are offering at Bike Friday.

More good news - the campaign isn't over! Many people don't even know about the campaign yet. There is more stock available, and we have an even more ambitious goal in mind, so we are still accepting investments while completing a financial review (per SEC requirements when raising over $100K). The displayed amount will continue to read $100K+ until the review is done next week.

Please share this campaign with your family & friends. Each additional investment helps make Bike Friday more capable of fully grabbing the market opportunities over this next year.
