Flying Cars and the Future

I remember watching The Jetsons on TV as a kid and thinking, why am I not flying to soccer practice like Leroy Jetson!  Traveling through the air has been my dream since childhood, which is probably why I got my pilot's license and an Aerospace Engineering degree. 

Designing and flying in airplanes wasn't enough though.  I wanted to ride in a flying vehicle that just flew itself, taking me wherever I wanted to go, above all the traffic congestion and noise on the ground. 

Enter - Urban Air Mobility and eVTOLs (electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft.  But technology needed to catch up with the dream.  Motor, battery, global positioning, electronic miniaturization and mass production has enabled this once crazy idea to finally take flight.

Flying Cars!

A lot of people have asked for more details on our plans around flying cars so we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to present our thoughts on where xCraft fits in this new and exciting market!

Urban Air Mobility (AKA “flying cars”) is an exciting space that people have dreamed about for decades.  It was part of our founder’s original vision to see xCraft’s technology used to help move people and things efficiently and autonomously through the vast open airspace.  Although it’s an exciting dream that seems to be closer to reality, we foresee several obstacles to full-scale adoption in the marketplace. Most notably, these obstacles are:

1. Intrinsic noise generated by the flying vehicles

2. Passenger throughput capability of a large scale air taxi operation

Noise:  

Aircraft are noisy.  Even a small aircraft such as the Schweitzer 300C helicopter, emits almost 90 dB of noise at 100 feet away (citation).  This is an uncomfortable amount of noise that can cause permanent hearing loss with long-term exposure (citation).  A small flying car (or eVTOL as they are called) would likely generate even more noise than a Schweitzer 300C since they have more rotors with shorter blades which need to spin faster than a helicopter’s to produce the same lift.  We don’t see public acceptance of such noisy eVTOLs being deployed on a mass scale in urban environments until this problem is solved.  That is why it’s one of the key focus areas of xCraft’s future technology development. 

Passenger Throughput:  

Getting people in and out of a flying taxi at the same rate as they can do so in an Uber today is a huge challenge facing the Urban Air Mobility market.  Many proposals revolve around placing eVTOL ports on top of skyscrapers. This presents the obvious challenge of getting people up and down elevators much faster than they do today.  Elevators were not built to handle adequate rider volume.  Also, to compete with ground-based taxis, hundreds, if not thousands of eVTOL flights would need to operate from a single location per hour.  This is simply not feasible given airspace and time constraints.  Consider that the busiest airport in the world (Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta) handles approximately 200 flights per hour (citation) with a vastly larger logistical infrastructure than could fit on top of a building.  To overcome this obstacle, clean sheet ideas need to be presented that remove the bottlenecks and allow true competition with existing ground-based transportation approaches.  This is the second key focus area of xCraft’s future technology development.

Pilotless aircraft, better known as drones, have revolutionized a number of industries with the multitude of applications they can have. From applications in the defense sector to delivering packages in a whole new way, new uses are constantly being developed for drones to open up a range of new possibilities for businesses. Robot Wars have begun and xCraft is excited to be among the sponsors this fall! The Norwalk Havoc Robo League (NHRL)  Season consists of 6 streamed events culminating with the championship in December. Sept 18th and 19th fights have just ended, the next heat will be Nov. 13th and 14th. We don’t believe in taking the traditional quad-copter drone model (a common four-propeller drone design) and forcing it to do a job it’s not suited for. If a particular design of ours isn’t going to work, we don’t spend valuable time trying to force it into a use-case it’s not suited for. Rather, we adapt as necessary until the product is exactly what is needed.

It is also why we have such a rigorous testing process, to ensure we are pushing our aircraft to their limits so they are ready for the field from day-one.

xCraft just finished up exhibiting this year at the 29th Annual International Defense Industry Exhibition MSPO in Poland!  We are part of the Idaho Pavilion with a select few aerospace companies.  For 29 years, the September International Defence Industry Exhibition has been an arena for defense industry companies from all corners of the world to present their innovating technologies.

 Global defense industry leaders showcased helicopters, armored equipment and rockets, explosives, chemical troops equipment and materials. There was an abundance of aviation equipment, air defense systems indispensable for air defense forces and the navy. Companies specializing in cutting-edge communication and ICT technologies, radio-electric equipment and optoelectronics also showcased at 2021's MSPO.

European markets are extremely interested in US made products and are currently modernizing their defense forces. This is terrific news for us as we have multiple aircraft that are easily specced for military and defense type usages, and we make them all here in the magnificent USA! It truly was a spectacular event! 

From a very early age, JD Claridge had his head in the clouds. With a passion for all things flying, JD was building model aircraft and affixing wings to his toys as early as 5 years old! His passion led him to study Aerospace and Electrical engineering in college. In Elementary school, JD would sell candy to classmates to earn money to support his aircraft hobby. This led him to discovering his second lifelong passion - entrepreneurship. 

After more than a decade working in and on airplanes, xCraft was born out of passion for flight and a desire to change the world for good.

In 2013, JD had a revolutionary concept that would go on to disrupt the $27 billion dollar drone industry and he had all the right contacts to get the job done. JD worked with Charles Manning, CEO and founder of  Kochava, a leading mobile app analytics platform, to launch the business. That year, JD began developing the first few prototypes in his garage.

The XPlusOne, xCraft’s first drone, was launched in the summer of 2014 with help from a dedicated team of interns and engineers. The XPlusOne was a first of its kind, VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft built to take off and land easily and transition to horizontal flight for high-speed, long-distance missions. 

xCraft launched the XPlusOne on Kickstarter in 2015 and raised $150K in their first campaign. From Kickstarter, xCraft was picked up by the producers of ABC’s SharkTank, where JD and Charles landed a record breaking deal with all 5 “Sharks”.

While xCraft bootstrapped through Kickstarter, they found themselves selling directly to consumers, but the long term goal was always to enter the commercial drone market.

There are tremendous benefits to drone use in Agriculture, Surveying & Mapping, Security & Surveillance, and Utilities.  In fact, many use-cases have yet to be discovered for those industries. 

Since its inception, xCraft has been on the front lines of development and integration between drones and the commercial sector. They continue to advance the drone industry when it comes to solving issues around flight-time, payload, autonomy, and surveillance capabilities.

Team xCraft is hard at work delivering the first PanaDrone V2.0 system to our customer in Texas.  The team has spent many hours out in the field, flight testing, and is now wrapping up Phase One (the design phase) of our PanaDrone Autonomous Tethered UAS. As you may know, we are working to deliver this first system to our new enterprise customer, after which, we have received their conditional Purchase Order for 100 more systems, totaling over $6 Million!

Phase One consisted of modifying the current design to accommodate the customer's requested specifications, aesthetic improvements, an upgraded tether tensioning system, a new "true 4K" wireless video transmission system, and a few software improvements. Now, with the design phase complete, we move into Phase Two; the build phase!

Phase Two is costly as we begin to order parts, send out designs to manufacturers, etc.  Due to current worldwide procurement challenges, we find lead times with many of our venders and manufacturers growing extremely long.  Some beyond 6 months!   The team is overcoming these hurdles by thinking "outside the box" with new design approaches and manufacturing many components locally or even in-house.  We are bringing in more great people and with your help, we are confident we will be able to deliver on time!

The Department of Defense is seeking commercial sUAS solutions to support the U.S. Army's Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR) Tranche 2 effort and other potential DoD and U.S. Government partners. The desired solution is an inexpensive, small, rucksack portable, VTOL UAS that provides a platoon with a rapidly deployable surveillance and reconnaissance capability to gain situational understanding beyond the next terrain feature. This recent sale was made through our Australian distributor in Brisbane.  The vehicles purchased are specifically designed for RTK mapping and will be headed to open pit mines Queensland, and along Australia's Eastern coast.

xCraft is thrilled to welcome our summer interns! We brought in three local young rising stars. Each one is uniquely gifted and highly motivated. We are so glad to have them join the xCraft family!

Ryder H. is in Grainger Engineering at the University of Illinois. He has a strong background in robotics. He is well versed in multiple computer languages, including Python and C++, and has experience with Arduino and Raspberry Pi. He progressed to the semifinals twice and the quarterfinals once in his three First Robotics Competitions for the robotics club. He designed the entire POS system used in his family's popular local restaurant,  and he already holds a few Patents. Ryder has always loved to learn new things. Whenever we have random question, Ryder is our live Siri, we have yet to stump him.

Brenner D. will be graduating from North Idaho STEM Charter Academy with his Associates from North Idaho College Spring of 2022. He was accepted at will be attending Arizona State University in the fall looking to get his Bachelors in Industrial Design. He has been designing in SolidWorks and Fusion 360 for 5 years and recently brought home the $1000 1st Prize in the STEM Charter Engineering Challenge sponsored by Regan Designs. Brenner has a great voice and taste in music, we've really enjoyed having him as our office D.J.  We're excited that Brenner will also be continuing with xCraft part-time during his senior year. 

Walter N. is entering his senior year at Lakeland High School. He then plans to pursue his computer science degree and ultimately join Engineers without Borders. He is experienced in C++, C#, CSS, and JavaScript. He loves all things computers, from building them, programming, web development, building games, helping others setup networks and computer systems, and more. Walter, the newest member of our team is quickly proving himself to be our go-to for all tasks from wiring, to building, to troubleshooting, programming, test flying, data entry, and the list goes on. A task given to Walter, is task marked as done!

We want to officially congratulate Sir Richard Branson and the Virgin Galactic team for their extraordinary achievement this week.  The team successfully flew a small rocket plane, the SpaceShipTwo, with 6 crew members to the official edge of space.  No small undertaking!

This is also a great time to mention that xCraft's very own board member, Burt Rutan, developed the first version of the Virgin Galactic space plane, the SpaceShipOne, with his team at Scaled Composites.  This team won the Ansari X Prize for the first non-government funded spaceflight in 2004.

We are excited to unveil xCraft’s new Shadow V2.0! 

Shadow V2.0 is a portable unmanned aerial system capable of 24hr+ tethered flight at altitudes of up to 100ft. 

Set up is as easy as removing the UAS from the hard-shell travel case, connecting the 110/240VAC tether and sending the launch command through the controller. Pre-loaded flight stabilization software keeps the UAS hovering above the launch point at a fixed altitude, adjusting for wind (up to 30 knots or 34 mph) and light.

The Shadow V2.0 optionally integrates with Rajant Kinetic mesh networks as a relay node and offers real time streaming HD and/or thermal video, making it a valuable asset for any situation requiring secure pop-up surveillance and/or communication. When the mission is complete a simple “land” command from the operator returns the UAS to the ground where it can be unplugged, packed, and ready for transport in minutes. The system includes an emergency backup power system that safely returns the UAS to the ground in the event of a primary system interruption.

This month’s featured employee is Ryder H.  We are thrilled to welcome Ryder into xCraft’s Summer Internship Program.  

Ryder is an energized and high-achieving computer engineering undergraduate from Grainger Engineering at the University of Illinois. He has a strong background in robotics, having attended Purdue’s Seminar for Top Engineering Prospects and led his high school’s First Robotics Competition robotics effort for four years. 

This young, ambitious entrepreneur even holds a few patents of his own!  He hopes to gain invaluable programming hands-on experience this summer and will be working with our team of engineers, programming on various projects and adding new software features to the drones. Currently, he is hard at work programming a Raspberry Pi to work as a coprocessor for a drone.  

 He is sure to be a valued contributor, developing powerful flying robots that change the world.

You may have heard that xCraft has signed to trade on StartEngine Secondary but you might not know what that means.  We wanted to take some time to explain what it is and how it can be a benefit for our investor community.  

WHAT? xCraft Regulation A+ Investors will soon have the opportunity to trade their shares through StartEngine Secondary, one of the first markets in the US where non-accredited investors can publicly trade investments in startups that have raised capital via Regulation A+. Start Engine Secondary will provide an alternative to waiting for a liquidity event and thus allowing xCraft Regulation A+ Investors the option to trade available shares with other investors. 

WHEN/HOW? The timeline for this is not yet determined, as our current Regulation A+ offering is still active. Once our Regulation A+ campaign has concluded, we will undergo the diligence process for quotation. If and when approved for launch, we will alert our investors that quotation is available, at which time, our Regulation A+ investors can offer their shares for sale on StartEngine Secondary and begin to browse, buy, and trade online. 

WHO? StartEngine is still working to find a way for previous round investors from our Regulation CF campaigns to trade their shares as well. However, initially, StartEngine Secondary is only available to our Regulation A+ investors. Keep your eye out for updates on this process as StartEngine is hard at work to open the trading up for all investors.

In response to some of the recent comments about our PhoneDrone Kickstarter campaign, we want to reiterate our commitment to take care of those supporters through refunds.  If this is you, please know that we are making every effort to move as quickly as possible even though it often seems like a slow process.  

As mentioned in a previous update (See “Flying Cars and Flying Phones”), we have already provided many refunds as we have available funds to do so.  We are not yet able to do a “mass” refund but try to work through several per week.

There's been a lot of positive things happing in the drone industry lately and I wanted to share some of them with our investor community. 

• FAA Has Unveiled the Final Drone Rules for Remote ID, Nighttime Flights and Operations Over People:  About a month ago, the Federal Aviation Administration issued several new rules which outline details of future drone operations and hardware requirements.  These regulations pave the way for mass adoption of drones in national airspace to perform life-saving and critical work such as fire spotting, medical and vaccine delivery, infrastructure inspection, package delivery, and much more.  Read more about these new rules here. We believe that these rules will allow xCraft's technology to be utilized in these growing markets.
• First Fully Automated Commercial Drone Flights Approved:  Earlier last month, the FAA granted a small Massachusetts-based company permission to operate drones without hands-on piloting or direct observation by human controllers.  The decision by the FAA limits operation of automated drones to rural areas, and altitudes below 400 feet, but is a potentially significant step in expanding commercial applications of drones for farmers, utilities, mining companies and other customers.  This might not sound like much, but it's a major step toward large-scale automated drone operations.  xCraft's PANADRONE is a fully-autonomous "drone-in-a-box" that we feel hopeful will be able to deliver it’s full potential in a regulatory environment that allows for such operations. We are excited to see where this is headed!
• DJI Added to US Commerce Blacklist: The Chinese drone company, DJI,  was added to the US Commerce Department's "Entity List".  Read more about this action here.  
• Made in America/USA Drone Executive Order:  In recent months President Trump and Biden have released executive orders that are aimed to help to ensure that the federal government procures goods and services from American companies whenever possible. Read more about this here and here.

With all that said, it is a good time to be  "America's Drone Company".  xCraft is well positioned with its technology and products to catch the wave of new opportunities headed this way!

Flying Cars!

A lot of people have asked for more details on our plans around flying cars so we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to present our thoughts on where xCraft fits in this new and exciting market!

Urban Air Mobility (AKA “flying cars”) is an exciting space that people have dreamed about for decades.  It was part of our founder’s original vision to see xCraft’s technology used to help move people and things efficiently and autonomously through the vast open airspace.  Although it’s an exciting dream that seems to be closer to reality, we foresee several obstacles to full-scale adoption in the marketplace. Most notably, these obstacles are:

1. Intrinsic noise generated by the flying vehicles

2. Passenger throughput capability of a large scale air taxi operation

Noise:  

Aircraft are noisy.  Even a small aircraft such as the Schweitzer 300C helicopter, emits almost 90 dB of noise at 100 feet away (citation).  This is an uncomfortable amount of noise that can cause permanent hearing loss with long-term exposure (citation).  A small flying car (or eVTOL as they are called) would likely generate even more noise than a Schweitzer 300C since they have more rotors with shorter blades which need to spin faster than a helicopter’s to produce the same lift.  We don’t see public acceptance of such noisy eVTOLs being deployed on a mass scale in urban environments until this problem is solved.  That is why it’s one of the key focus areas of xCraft’s future technology development. 

Passenger Throughput:  

Getting people in and out of a flying taxi at the same rate as they can do so in an Uber today is a huge challenge facing the Urban Air Mobility market.  Many proposals revolve around placing eVTOL ports on top of skyscrapers. This presents the obvious challenge of getting people up and down elevators much faster than they do today.  Elevators were not built to handle adequate rider volume.  Also, to compete with ground-based taxis, hundreds, if not thousands of eVTOL flights would need to operate from a single location per hour.  This is simply not feasible given airspace and time constraints.  Consider that the busiest airport in the world (Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta) handles approximately 200 flights per hour (citation) with a vastly larger logistical infrastructure than could fit on top of a building.  To overcome this obstacle, clean sheet ideas need to be presented that remove the bottlenecks and allow true competition with existing ground-based transportation approaches.  This is the second key focus area of xCraft’s future technology development.

Flying Phones!

In 2015, xCraft ran a successful Kickstarter campaign and later a Indiegogo campaign for the PhoneDrone.  The concept was just what the name implies; it was a drone that carried a smartphone - using its camera, processor, GPS, and cellular connectivity to create an intelligent flying robot.  xCraft has been issued patents for this technology.  

Although the initial funding went well, the project faced many challenges and delays in delivery, culminating with our manufacturer in China pulling the plug and walking away with almost $300k of our backer's money.  This was a huge blow to a small startup and to our community.  We decided to do the right thing; cancel the project and pledge to refund backers.

Today, we have already provided many refunds but the work is not done.  We must refund every single backer before this company can move on to more exciting endeavors.  We've now put this in writing.  The "Use of Proceeds" table in our offering document reflects this promise.  As long as we are successful with this raise, we plan to refund every backer. We think that it is worth it to take care of the people who have helped us be successful!

So that is our story about flying cars and flying phones.  The past is sometimes dark but the future is bright!
