We enable our smartphone telecom partners (carriers & manufacturers) to connect directly with their customers - something they've been unable to accomplish due to a fragmented supply chain.


Currently, a manufacturer ships to a distributor, who ships to a wholesaler, who ships to a retailer (often in a small village or town).  They then sell to an end-user - but don’t collect even the most basic information such as name or email address, so the carrier or manufacturer remain blind on critical customer data. This leaves them unable to prevent returns and reduce support costs, which in turn leads to customer churn, lower revenue, and slimmer margins.

Since UpChannel Co-Founders Jacob Katsof and Charlie Hulcher met in 2015 at one of the country’s largest hackathons (which was consequently won by the team Charlie led), UpChannel has connected smartphone manufacturers and carriers to their end users.  This was previously impossible due to a horribly fragmented supply chain for smartphones sold in emerging markets.

The UpChannel Blockchain - A New, Tokenized System

UpChannel has built extensive relationships with telecom carriers and manufacturers.  Our CRM and eCommerce tools provide them with great value, offering robust business intelligence and marketing support.

Blockchain is a game-changer because it brings a first-world experience to people in second- and third-world countries.  We are honored and excited to have the opportunity to truly improve the standard of living for billions of people by bringing equal access to markets and services.

Many startups and companies like to say they’re going to 'change the world' - and then proceed to start with and focus on first-world countries alone.  We consider ourselves fortunate to live in these countries and already enjoy a standard of living that’s envied by billions of others around the world, so we’ve chosen to start serving second- and third-world countries, improving their standard of living on Day 1 and then working our way up the chain.  


To achieve this, we plan to enable blockchain for the next 3+ billion smartphones being distributed in emerging markets.

 

We also believe these emerging markets will adopt blockchain into their lives much faster than more advanced economies.  Some of the reasons for this are the corruption prevalent in certain banking systems, a lack of local or federal ID, a lack of a consistent and/or reliable address system or means of contact, and more.

Our blockchain strategy needs to work for many stakeholders: our telecom partners, the end users, and cryptocurrency exchange traders.  With that in mind, our plan is to utilize our existing virtual currency system to launch closed-loop virtual currencies linked to carrier minutes for each custom app we ship - giving end users the ability to pay their carrier bill, purchase physical and virtual items, and more all within the app.  Our integration with carrier billing systems will also give our end users the ability to buy minutes with physical fiat currency at existing retail locations and have those minutes appear within the app to use within the closed loop system.

 

With that system in place, we’ll connect the closed-loop minutes in each app to our single exchange traded cryptocurrency token. This makes our token the exclusive access point to bring minutes in or out of our telecom-connected apps.  Such two-way conversion gives our end users the ability to convert their minutes into the cryptocurrency of their choice, and to hold them within their wallets. They can also keep their minutes in the closed-loop system inside the app, shielding them from price fluctuations on the exchange, and allowing them to very briefly transition into UpChannel’s token on occasion to perform an action that can only be done as a token-holder.

 

Our telecom partners enjoy this model because it increases usage of 'minutes', directly improving their bottom line and customer retention (key issues for telecoms) while keeping control of the closed-loop economy within their app.

 

This arrangement also means that smartphone users can seamlessly interact with our DApp marketplace partners, seeing in the user interface that they can use their 'minutes' by transferring them into our marketplace apps.

UpChannel Blockchain - The Wallet

Our first blockchain product is a Wallet that will allow our smartphone partners to use their smartphone minutes as digital currency, via UpChannel tokens.  This wallet will be connected to the Ethereum and Bitcoin ecosystems through a trusted third party.

 

Critically, the Wallet will use patterns and concepts that people in emerging markets are familiar with, simplifying the advanced operations that today’s cryptocurrency applications require, thereby enabling customers to use their 'minutes' for advanced smart contract applications without even needing to realize they are participating in the blockchain economy.

 

UpChannel Blockchain - The Marketplace

The real power of UpChannel Tokens is the power of distributed ledger technology and smart contracts.  


The connection formed between the smartphone owner and our industry partner is enriched by services that integrate into UpChannel’s API.  This allows third party developers to integrate their products and services, giving them access to an established userbase.  Developers can publish data to the API or subscribe to updates from it.

Currently, some popular business tools are already integrated, forming the basis of the DApp Marketplace.  This marketplace already exists with the 1.2M+ smartphones on which UpChannel has been installed and we believe the new DApps will improve the standard of living for the smartphone users we serve, now and in the future.

 

At launch, the UpChannel Tokens will be usable for inexpensive smartphones, roaming data SIM cards, exclusive deals on apps and DApps, and more.  In turn, our carrier partners will also be able to accept them for data, talking, and texting services. 

 

Significant Market Finding

Mainstream blockchain adoption is limited by the lack of a scalable distribution channel. 


UpChannel has created such a channel and is adding a broad spectrum, Ethereum-based blockchain to our platform.  


This will enable the end-user to securely transact with our tokens (called ChannelCoins) through eCommerce, an ad network, banking, payments, among others - regardless of where they live or the quality of their smartphone and connectivity.


UpChannel will distribute a user-friendly wallet and its open blockchain will be compatible with existing Ethereum DApps.

 

Smartphone Growth & Potential

UpChannel has started with Android, which owns 82% of the global market.  Inside the Android ecosystem, we specialize in serving 2nd- and 3rd-tier smartphone carriers and manufacturers that sell roughly 1B smartphones per year.  

 

The standard slate of vendors who provide 'business management software' to 1st-tier providers have grossly underserved this sector, creating an opportunity for us to quickly partner with a number of key players as we deliver a white-labeled suite of customer engagement tools to them.

 

Having our app pre-installed on all partner smartphones as they leave the factory (or when a carrier sells the device), UpChannel often becomes the very first app these new smartphone owners interact with.  And with our app installed on their devices, our telecom partners have the leverage to add new products, services, and features through the UpChannel Cloud.
