The reality is people aren’t taking skin cancer seriously enough.


One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, and every hour someone dies from melanoma in the US (source). Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the US, and rates are on the rise, both in the US and worldwide, with about 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun (source).


While there’s a growing public awareness of the serious consequences of compounded UV exposure, not enough protective measures are being taken to safeguard our skin and health. Now, with the ongoing realities of climate change and our depleting ozone, additional precautions are becoming more important to ensure safety from the sun.

The 10% StartEngine Owners' Bonus

Melanoma Monday & Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Dear Investors & Followers-

Today is Melanoma Monday and the official kick-off of Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Have you made your skin check appointment?

Sun50 was founded and inspired by my cousin Reneé’s valiant fight with melanoma. Reneé was in her early thirties, living her best life, when she discovered a discolored mole on her back.  This mole was determined to be melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Upon diagnosis, Reneé did every treatment she could to fight melanoma, but she lost her life within 10 months of the diagnosis, when we were both 32 years old. 

I have always believed if Reneé and I had known about the importance of skin cancer prevention by adhering to sun protection behaviors growing up, and if we had known about early skin cancer detection via dermatological skin checks and personal observation of our own skin, maybe Reneé would be alive today.

At Sun50, our heartfelt mission is to fight skin cancer.  As a collective, highly-experienced team, we work every day to elevate skin cancer awareness and create high-quality sun protection apparel for better living. Thankfully, we are surrounded by a large community of dermatologists, skin cancer/melanoma survivors, and skin cancer/melanoma awareness advocates who share our passion to end skin cancer and believe in our mission.

Not all hats or clothing are sun protective. Even baseball players are prone to a nasty sunburn without the right gear.

From the beginning Sun50 has worked closely with The Skin Cancer Foundation, The American Academy of Dermatology and The Claire Marie Foundation in support of our mission to “reduce the incidence of skin cancer by supplying the world with the most fashion-forward, easy to wear, and socially impactful sun protective clothing.”

The Claire Marie Foundation is dedicated to elevating melanoma awareness in adolescents and highlights the importance of sun protection and skin checks to reduce the incidence of skin cancer. With ambassador programs on college campuses nationwide, The Claire Marie Foundation offers free skin screenings and successfully raises melanoma awareness, education, and prevention with their peer-to-peer connections. 

Sun50 has a strong and on-going partnership with The Claire Marie Foundation (CMF). We have successfully collaborated on the design and release of custom CMF hats and accessories, and a portion of the proceeds from the sales of these items goes directly to the CMF. We are a dedicated and experienced team of sun protection apparel professionals. We are committed to producing high-quality and purposeful fashion made right here in the 🇺🇸.  And we play to win.

Did you know 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70? Did you know 90% of skin cancer is associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun? Both true according to The Skin Cancer Foundation. 

But here is the GOOD NEWS (And this is what we are CHEERING about in the video): Sun protection clothing is the most effective form of sun protection. And our fabrics deliver a CHEMICAL-FREE UPF 50+ level or sun protection both wet or dry. Not all clothing is considered equal when in comes to protecting your skin. AND skin cancer, while one of the most common cancers, may be prevented with sun protection and is easy to treat when detected early.
