Reasons to Invest

Mission-Driven – Our patent-pending technology makes it easier and more cost-effective for medical facilities to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirement to provide assistance to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
First Mover Advantage – as far as we know, there are no other wearable closed captioning devices on the market today.
Nearly 2.5 billion people globally will have some level of hearing loss by 2050, while the interpreting and translating market is estimated to be worth $49.6 billion and the Smart Badge market is forecast to reach $33 billion by 2025.

Meet Badger – your closed caption smart badge

We created Badger, one of the world’s first closed captioning smart badges that converts speech-to-text in real-time. Badger translates speech to 50+ languages, providing real-time communication right below the speaker’s face.  We improve and enhance comprehension and understanding for both people in the conversation.

We are inspired to help people overcome communication barriers.  Whether you are deaf, have hearing loss, speak a different language, or are wearing a mask, Badger will help.

The Problem

Inadequate Communication for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires businesses to find ways to effectively communicate with the 35 million Americans who have hearing loss, yet most current solutions fall short of meeting this required goal.

In addition, there are millions of nonfunctional ID badges being worn around the world without the power to connect to the 21st century.

The Solution

Wearable Closed Captions

We designed a wearable badge that provides real-time closed captioning right below someone’s face. For the first time, people will be able to wear closed captions, increasing the effectiveness of communication for those with hearing disabilities and language barriers.

Badger connects to your phone via bluetooth, using two microphones to isolate the wearer’s speech.  The speech is transmitted to the  Badger app on the phone and converted into text. The text is then transmitted back to the Badger to display the spoken word in real-time on screen for someone to read.

Badger also has RFID and NFC for other smart features in development, which we plan to implement via our app.

Badger will generate revenue through direct sales. In the future, we will move towards a Hardware SaaS business model (Hardware sales + subscription recurring revenues).

The Market

A Unique Niche that Spans Multiple Growing Markets

More than 35 million Americans and 466 million people worldwide report some degree of hearing loss, yet there is currently no way to put closed captions or translations on people for face-to-face interactions. The current functionality of closed caption products is limited to computers, televisions, or smartphones.

Our primary target industries are the $49.6 billion interpretation and translation market, as well as the $21.1 billion eBadge market, projected to reach $33 billion by 2025. There is a great upward opportunity for sales and profits with Badger.

We plan to start selling and using Badgers in hundreds of thousands of hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, hospice centers, residential care communities, and adult day centers across the US.  All of these centers have the potential to purchase hundreds to thousand of Badgers for each employee that works there.

Our Traction

Patented Technology Ready for Commercial Sale

We’ve raised $500K+ to date, and have filed two patents with more than 50 claims that cover today's technology and many future iterations, with more filings to come.

We are production-ready and prepared to commercialize our product. We are seeking to contract with a manufacturer in Fremont, California to build the next run of 2,000 Badgers, and then grow from there.

Why Invest

Increasing Accessibility with Revolutionary Technology

We envision a future where plain paper or plastic badges will be replaced by Badgers capable of captioning and translating, as well as swiping in and out of buildings, trade shows, conferences, airports, and more.

Our patented technology is set to revolutionize the $49.6 billion interpretation and translation market and make life better for millions of people.

Join us as we use our technology to raise the standard of communication for the world’s 466 million deaf and hard of hearing people.

We are sure you know of someone who will benefit tremendously from Badger.

Badger is a product that provides for not just financial ROI but a heartfelt feeling of improving the quality of life for so many. Invest today!

Happy Friday! We have 11 days until our campaign closes.  If you're considering investing, the time is now.

In the video below, you'll see Badger captioning this motivational pre-game speech from the movie Miracle. Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

PS:  In case you wanted to know what the movie Miracle is about, see below:

When college coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) is hired to helm the 1980 U.S. men's Olympic hockey team, he brings a unique and brash style to the ice. After assembling a team of hot-headed college all-stars, who are humiliated in an early match, Brooks unites his squad against a common foe, the heavily-favored Soviet team. As the U.S. squad tries to overcome insurmountable odds and win the gold medal, the team becomes a microcosm for American patriotism during the Cold War.

Our campaign is closing in 25 days! What is Text Mode? See demo

Satellite Displays’ purpose is to improve communication through innovation.  We are inspired to help all people overcome communication barriers.

So, when a speech therapist once said to me, “What if my patient can’t speak?”

I did not have an answer…

At the time, I did not even understand the question.  Badger is a closed captioning smart badge that uses voice technology – why would you ask this question?

However, this problem stuck with me so my team and I started to think “How can Badger help?”

Introducing Text Mode: Turn your smartphone into a remote keyboard.  Your text will be displayed on your Badger in real time for others to read.   If you are unable to speak because of a disability, Text Mode makes it easy for them to communicate.

In the speech world, Badger Text Mode would operate as an Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices (AAC).

27 Days Left to Invest; Plus, a live presentation to the Hearing Loss Association of America

The countdown begins! Only 27 days left to invest in Badger by Satellite Displays.

We are also excited to announce that we will be presenting to the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) Diablo Valley Chapter on Saturday March 5, 2022, at 1:00pm ET (10am PT).

If you are interested in attending the virtual chapter meeting to see Badger in action, you can register here: https://www.hearinglossdv.org/

Hearing Loss Association of America’s mission is to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support, and advocacy.  HLAA is a leading voice in improving communication access for people with hearing loss.  Their advocacy efforts range from the grassroots, local level all the way up to Capitol Hill.  They strive to give people the tools they need to live more successfully with hearing loss and to show them they do not have to face hearing loss alone.

Satellite Displays’ purpose is to improve communication through innovation.  We are inspired to help all people overcome communication barriers.  Communication is a two-way street and Badger helps both the person speaking and the person listening. Whether you are deaf, have hearing loss, speak a different language or are wearing a mask, Badger can help.

Hey Badger - Let’s talk…

Case Study: Satellite Displays’ Badger Utilizes Microphones from Knowles to Support Millions with Hearing Loss

There are countless hurdles to overcome when it comes to effective communication with peers, colleagues, and even strangers. These hurdles often include language barriers or even physical barriers, such as masks.

But one hurdle that many people don’t often think of is that related to inherent hearing capabilities. For those who are deaf or are hearing-impaired, effective communication is a constant struggle.

Fortunately, Satellite Displays has developed a “smart badge” (aptly named “Badger”) to address this issue.  Badger uses high-end speech recognition technology and Badger translates spoken words into text in real-time.

In order to complete the translation between audio and readable text, Satellite Displays has tapped Knowles Corporation, a market leader and global provider of advanced micro-acoustic microphones.

Through the use of industry-leading technology, Knowles’ SiSonic™ microphones permit the effective two-way communication that ultimately leads to Badger’s closed captioning capabilities. Knowles’ SiSonic microphone is miniature and consists of an acoustic sensor and a low-noise input buffer, often used within cellphones, laptops and portable music recorders. The SiSonic microphone allows for portability and excellent pick-up, with minimal distortion throughout. There are also multiple performance modes – sleep, low-power, and normal – to adapt seamlessly to changing surroundings, all while isolating the speaker’s voice during the process.

Badger can be used in a myriad of ways throughout daily life – many of them not linked to hearing disabilities at all. For instance, as it relates to frontline workers wearing masks for the foreseeable future, Badger can be used to communicate quickly and effectively with colleagues and patients, oftentimes in dire situations.

It can also be utilized effectively in more casual settings, including those related to global travel. For example, when people visit different countries wherein their native language isn’t spoken, Badger can be used for translation purposes. Currently, Badger can translate to and from many languages, making both business and more colloquial conversations seamless amongst all parties involved.

Utilizing Badger’s powerful speech recognition technology, and high-performance microphones from Knowles, Badger is able to “reinforce daily conversations” in a nearly endless list of scenarios. Whether you’re hearing-impaired, communicating through a mask or with suboptimal background noise, or overcoming a language barrier, Badger helps overcome the modern challenges of communication today.

A need for translations in the community

Thank you to our shareholders and fans for sending numerous articles supporting how Badger can help.   Below are 3 articles where Badger’s translation ability would have come in handy.  We are on a mission to improve communication for all people in many different languages.

October 6, 2021: Advocates Want Interpreters for More Languages in New Mexico

An advocacy group for disadvantaged communities in New Mexico says more language translation and interpreter services are needed for people who don’t speak Spanish or English.

The Center on Law and Poverty asked a state District Court judge to intervene and order more robust services in languages such as Vietnamese, Chinese, Dari, Arabic, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, and Dine.  The group warns that some foreign language speakers are likely to be missing crucial health and nutritional support that they are eligible to receive.

November 19, 2021: Metro Ministries Urgently Needs 500 Spanish-Speaking Volunteers

During Thanksgiving, this time, it’s Metro Ministries that is in need because the organization says the need for bilingual volunteers has exploded.  During the holiday, volunteers spent the afternoon loading groceries and turkeys into cars for families in need of help; however, communication was a huge problem.

“Some people are afraid to come here because they think that there is nobody to help them because of the language.”  The Metro Ministries says it needs 500 bilingual volunteers across its 12 Tampa Bay locations.

November 30, 2021: NYC to invest $4M in ‘Language Access for All’ for multilingual families

New York City is investing a historic $4 million investment in improving outreach, engagement, and communication with multilingual families across the five boroughs with the launch of Language Access for All, Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter and the City Council announced.

About 40% of city Department of Education (DOE) families speak a language other than English at home — and Language Access for All will strengthen the DOE’s ability to deliver resources to all families in a language accessible for them.

As you can see, translated captions are in need!

We couldn’t do this without you.  We are thankful for all of our followers, fans and investors from around the world.

Podcast Alert: Check us out!

We joined host Phyllis Ayman on her podcast “Seniors Straight Talk: Informative Conversations for the Senior Years of Our Lives” to discuss Badger.

Listen here: Innovative Technology: Real Time Transcription Voice Display

“As a speech/language pathologist I couldn’t be more thrilled to learn about Badger by Satellite Displays!! A solution for real time translation for people with hearing loss or foreign language speakers.” -Phyllis Ayman

Episode Description:

Problem awareness is the root of a problem's solution. So, it is with Badger by Satellite Displays. Badger is the world's first closed captioning smart badge that converts speech-to-text in real-time with a translation capability in more than 50 languages. When Mike Williston's hearing-impaired father was hospitalized, medical professionals wearing masks restricted his ability to lip read and therefore he was unable to understand what was being communicated. This inspired the search for a solution. Mike Williston and Peter Sprague diligently worked together until Badger by Satellite Displays was born. The use and application of the real time transcription extends well beyond persons with limited hearing or total hearing loss. The translation capability can serve to ensure adequate communication between health care professionals, hospital patients and/or long-term care residents who may have limited or no English capability. Furthermore, many professionals serving these populations originate from non-English speaking countries. This oftentimes creates situations where each party is not fully understanding the other, especially problematic when it comes to a person's health and well-being. This scratches the surface of the situations where Badger by Satellite Displays can be the much-needed solution to improve communication. Listen in to hear the variety of ways that Badger by Satellite Displays can help you, your friends and family. If you'd like to contribute to support this innovative technology, please visit: https://www.startengine.com/satellite-displays

Badger by Satellite Displays will be exhibiting at The American Nurses Credentialing Center Conference in Atlanta, Georgia November 11-13th in E Ink’s booth #614.  This conference will have nurses from all over the country and will feature many current healthcare innovations.

If you talk with any Nurse or healthcare professional, they know how difficult communication is with people who have hearing loss or speak a different language.  We are excited to show them a REAL SOLUTION to a REAL PROBLEM in REAL TIME! With Badger, a nurse will no longer need to abandon their patient to find an interpreter or some other way to communicate with them because their words will be converted into captions in real time for others to read.  As a caregiver, they will be able to have face-to-face conversations with the patients they are treating.  This will build better trust, empathy, and ultimately better care!!

Being a nurse is challenging; communication shouldn’t be…and doesn’t have to be!  Badger provides an additional tool that will actually help them, their patient and the hospital provide better care!

Captions. No distractions… Let’s talk!

A deaf woman says she was refused service at Dunkin’ Donuts – Watch the video!

Hey Dunkin’ Donuts… let’s talk!  Badger can help.

No one should be hurting like this because they are refused service.

In September, Shannon Heroux, a deaf woman from California went viral on TikTok after sharing an emotional video after she was denied service at a Dunkin’ because there was a lack of communication.

Shannon, who uses a cochlear implant and reads lips, could not hear the Dunkin’ employee due to the employee wearing a mask and speaking behind plexiglass.

"When I got to the front I pulled my mask down and just let the employee know really quickly 'Hi, I'm deaf, how do we do this?' And I pulled my mask back up, and I was ready to order," Shannon said in a video interview. "She waved to call over her manager ... A couple minutes go by and I try to reach over to her, like 'Hey, I have to go, can I just place my order?'"

When the manager came over, it was the same result; he spoke with a mask on… and she could not understand him because of their masks, the plexiglass and distance between them and other ambient noise in the shop.

"I keep telling him, 'I'm deaf, I can't hear you. I'm deaf, I can't hear you,'" Shannon said. "And he was still speaking to me. I can tell when people are talking because the mask moves, obviously. And I kept saying, 'I can't hear you, I need to read your lips.'"

Eventually the Dunkin’ manager gestured at the door continuously saying the same phrase which she assumed to be something like “have a nice day.”  She even tried to write her order down but there was no pen.

"I could tell he was just repeating the same phrase and after the third time I said 'You're really not going to take my order?' And he just shook his head no," Shannon said. "And my heart sank, like 'What did I do wrong?' So I exited the Dunkin' and I got in my car and it took me a minute to understand that I was just denied service."

Badger by Satellite Displays’ purpose is to improve communication through innovation.  We are inspired to help all people overcome communication barriers.  Badger helps the person speaking by captioning what they are saying in real time (in many different languages) and Badger helps the person listening. This is just one of the many places where captions could have helped.  Let’s keep spreading awareness.

Medical provider agrees to pay over $1 Million for repeatedly failing to meet ADA requirements - Badger can help!

October 19, 2021: The US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington (KFHPW), resolved allegations from several complainants that it repeatedly failed to provide interpreters to patients who are deaf or deaf-blind, in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), announced US Attorney Nicholas W. Brown. The settlement establishes a $1 million fund to pay claims to those patients whose rights were violated. KFHPW also agrees to update and improve procedures for evaluating the need for interpreters, contracting with interpreters, and training staff surrounding those procedures.

View the official Department of Justice press release/violation notice from last week (October 19, 2021) here:

DOJ vs. Kaiser Foundation - Lack of Disability Accommodations

Badger makes it easier and more cost-effective for medical providers to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandated requirements to provide assistance to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.  A wearable closed captioning smart badge helps both the person speaking and the person listening/reading to effectively communicate.

That’s what Badger can do… Let’s Talk!
