A father-son team dedicated to improving oral care

Ryan Schwartz is the son of a world-renowned dentist, Dr. Cary Schwartz, but that never stopped him from neglecting his teeth. Like so many, Ryan rarely brushed for the required two minutes and often neglected the hard to reach areas. Years ago, his father’s hygienist suggested Ryan whiten his teeth.



As Ryan slid the customized bleaching tray into his mouth, he had a wild idea: what if the tray was lined with bristles and could brush the whole mouth in a fraction of the time? Ryan immediately called his father who knew better than anyone that a brush that could be both effortless and effective would be oral care salvation.

Most people are just not that good at brushing their teeth… and that can lead to serious health issues.

According to the CDC, 90% of Americans have cavities and 2 in 3 older Americans suffer from gum disease. These problems can be traced back to poor compliance and brushing technique. Studies show that only 1 in 10 people brush properly.

Poor oral care can affect major organs and contribute to health problems including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, and even contribute to oral cancer, which now takes more lives annually than cervical or skin cancer.

We are a mission-driven dental device company building innovative and intuitive oral care products. The unique half mouth brush head design of the Encompass toothbrush ensures proper bristle placement, pressure and angle, while uniformly brushing all teeth surfaces. How We Are Different


Our patented technology creates a toothbrush you can trust

Today’s leading toothbrushes rely on the user to apply perfect technique (2 minute brushing, at the proper angle, covering all tooth surfaces). “Mouthguard” toothbrushes that have been hitting the market are simply inadequate. They lack the engineering and manufacturing expertise and they rely on sonic technology, which is the wrong approach when trying to move a larger brush head.

We’ve spent over 5 years in R&D, and in this process we built, tried and ultimately ruled out the approaches adopted by these other brushes. Encompass uses a one-of-a-kind, patented air pump system which creates 100 brush strokes per second. Dental retail and direct-to-consumer sales

We plan to deliver approximately 4000+ Encompass toothbrushes to Indiegogo backers starting in December 2020 as our “Beta” launch. If needed, refinements will be made prior to our official launch.

Why do you need to raise more funds?

We are building a best-in-class medical device. The sophisticated design, engineering and manufacturing is expensive. We have been fortunate to have the support of over 3,500 Indiegogo backers. We need additional funds to deliver Encompass to the wider market, beyond our existing backers.

What is a Convertible Note?

A convertible note offers you the right to receive Non-Voting Common Stock in Ryca International, Inc.. The amount of Non-Voting Common Stock you will receive in the future will be determined at the next equity round in which the Company raises at least $1,500,000.00 in a qualified equity financing. The highest conversion price per security is set based on a $8,000,000.00  Valuation Cap or if less, then you will receive a 20.0% discount on the price the new investors are paying.  You also receive 5.0% interest per year added to your investment.  When the maturity date is reached, if the note has not converted then you are entitled to receive Non-Voting Common Stock equal to your investment and interest back at a price per security determined by dividing the Valuation Cap by the aggregate number of outstanding equity securities of the Company as of immediately prior (on a fully diluted basis).

ENCOMPASS UPDATE

Hi All,

 
As always, we hope you’re well. We truly are heads-down working day in and day out.  We continue to test and iterate the design. The process is slow but necessary. Based on satisfying test results we were finally able to start ordering injection molded parts from our contract manufacturer (Quick “inside baseball” note: Prototype pieces are often made with quick-turn 3D printed pieces and parts, whereas injection molded parts are far more sophisticated and consumer ready). Our first run of injection molded bladders are actually in route and should land any day.   The bladder is essentially the heartbeat of the brush. Countless hours of R&D, engineering, design and manufacturing hours have gone into just the bladder alone. Receiving these parts is a major milestone in our journey to get Encompass in your hands.

 

As you’ve no doubt seen, many other companies are trying to deliver on a similar promise of simpler, smarter, faster oral care. We respect their efforts, but so far their solutions seem to be inadequate.  We are determined to deliver on our promise of effortless oral care, but we refuse to settle for anything less than a quality product that guarantees an optimal clean. We are getting there. Each iteration of Encompass is stronger than the last, and closer to the finish line. We are growing our team and partnerships. And by recently filing two new provisional patents, we are further protecting Encompass’s unique approach to oral hygiene.

 

For those of you whose investment level triggered Encompass brushes as a perk, we understand you’re curious about shipping timelines? During the last update we let you know that we were looking at end of the year. We’re thrilled we’ve begun ordering some injection molded parts. But the reality is we are still finalizing many crucial components, and as such, have not begun the tooling process on those elements. This makes estimating the delivery timing very difficult. It is likely we may not deliver until 2022. Our commitment to you as investors is to continue to build value in RYCA. Many of our updates focus on our engineering efforts – and we will certainly include those updates below – but we’re excited to switch gears for a moment and take you behind the brand.  Working closely with our marketing department, our goal is to tell a clear, concise, and consistent “story,” from our logo/brand identity, to product/industrial design, all the way through the packaging that will show up at your door.   For us, this starts with our promise of effortless and complete oral care. We are moved by the powerful imagery of a ring or circle to capture and communicate our all-“encompassing” approach to oral health. You’ll see this first in our new – and never before seen – logo!



You’ll notice the ring/circle theme communicated with our mystic blue “o.” Perceptive readers may notice our “e” looks similar to a classic power button icon, only turned to its side. We love this, as we believe better oral care is empowering. Combining these two elements gives us a unique icon, which will extend throughout the brand identity.

Our light ring power button on the handle will serve as your central point of communication, letting you know when to charge and when to replace your brush head. The centralized communication system, rather than a variety of icons and indicators, delivers another key message for us: simplicity.

Now back to engineering/delivery:

We are continuing to test and iterate. We are getting there. Each new prototype test reveals strengths and weaknesses. Our job is to identify where the brush excels and replicate this throughout the brush.

 

What does all mean for a delivery date: We still don’t have a firm date.  Once we lock the final engineering design, based on accumulated test results and learning, there will be a good amount of time required for final tooling, assembly, fulfillment and final shipping.  This puts us well into the later part of the year, or perhaps even into 2022. Everyone at RYCA is committed to getting Encompass in your hands as soon as possible, but it must be the brush we've promised, and we have to give ourselves, and our shareholders, the time to get it right.

 

I hope with these updates you see we are hard at work.  Changing the oral care industry and providing a better solution to oral care is not easy. But it’s absolutely worth the effort. I believe our team is uniquely qualified to deliver on our promise.

A LOOK AT OUR ENGINEERING AND TESTING JOURNEY

Happy New Year! At RYCA, we are thrilled for the year to come. We hope all of you are hanging in there. We apologize for the time gap since the last update. As you’ll see we have been quite busy.

We’re excited to share a short video that gives you a look at our engineering evolution, as well as a sneak peek at our testing set up. As you know we have a lot of competitors, so we must be a bit discreet with what we share. I’ll do my best in this update to provide some context around what you’re seeing.

Hope you enjoyed the video. Let me break down what you just saw:

03:14: This is a rendering of our old industrial design (product design). A previous update shared our latest design.

05:20: As you’ll see, the video starts out with early prototypes. What we’re doing here is testing and validating some basic functionality. Can we get adequate movement from our unique air-driven system? As we’ve discussed in earlier updates, every detail matters. These early protos also include early bladder designs. You’ll see throughout the video how the bladder design evolves for more optimal movement.

09:00: Using video we analyze the bristle movement. Are the bristles giving us the cleaning action we need? Are they penetrating the interproximal areas (space between the teeth)? Should they be longer? Shorter? Stiffer? We learn from every video and every data point.

16:03: As we learn and iterate, we are able to improve the brush head movement.

20:11: We measure the displacement of the brush head, as this data factors into our brush head design specs.

23:17: We test our pump motor at different frequencies (Hz), to see what frequency or speed yields the best cleaning results.

30:11: Here you’ll see the evolution of the bladder design, which is tested for various efficiency characteristics before it’s built onto a new brush head for testing.

34:25: These are recent prototypes on our testing bench. We run the video at different speeds. The brush head moves so fast that it’s often hard to see the movement with the naked eye. The “slow motion” gives us a better look, and you’ll see the movement and coverage is far superior to earlier brushes.  We don’t bother putting all the “finishing touches” on these prototypes, as these brushes have a very short life span. They are built to teach us information. After a few runs on our test bench, we move onto the next version.   

I hoped to share more details about out test set up, but our “legal counsel” discouraged this. Our ability to test accurately and efficiently improves our ability to prefect the brush. Wiser folks suggested we shouldn’t reveal too much of this process.   I can say we tests each new prototype, and with precision accuracy we can test the cleaning efficacy on all surfaces of each and every tooth. We are incredibly excited by the results we’re seeing.

We are hoping to launch in the second part of 2021. As we get closer to finalizing the brush head, firmer dates should materialize, and when they do, you will be the first to know.

A WHOLE NEW LOOK

As always we hope you and yours are staying safe and managing some laughs.

 

We believe Encompass is the brush of the future. With your help we are building something truly revolutionary. Our last update  focused on our engineering and manufacturing efforts, which we push forward on every day. Today we are excited to focus on DESIGN. We are proud of our previous design, but we are thrilled to share our latest evolution. We’ve taking the bones and soul of the previous Encompass, and elevated it to something modern and classic at the same time, and dare we say even a bit romantic.  As I’ve mentioned before we can’t share images of the brush head yet until we secure additional IP/Patents, but we are sharing what we can. We understand this is a source of frustration for some. Please also see it as a sign of our seriousness in protecting the value of your investment.

 

Because we are perfectionists and creatives, as well as engineers, we will no doubt be tinkering until the very end. Please feel free to share your reactions. We love hearing from you.

 

Working with our incredible Chief Marketing Officer, we are diving into our branding/marketing/positioning work, all with the purpose of launching our company and product thoughtfully and professionally.

 

Regarding engineering and manufacturing, the brush handle is all but complete from an engineering stand point. We are still testing the brush head with illuminating and encouraging results. It’s fair to say we will not meet our December ambitions. Probably best to let the timeline from the last update stand: Q1 or Q2 of next year.

Hey Everyone,

 

To begin with, we truly hope everyone is hanging in there. If you’re near fires we hope you are safe. If you’re teaching your kids at home, we hope you are finding time to exhale. For all of us missing friends, family, love ones, we hope you’re finding meaningful ways to connect.

 

At RYCA, we too are homeschooling our children, keeping a close eye on fire evacuation warnings, and missing loved ones. These are incredibly challenging times. Countless companies are struggling to navigate; many doors have sadly and understandably shuttered.  You have backed a company with a mission and drive to succeed. We believe better oral care is essential and that with your help, we can provide game-changing and lifesaving solutions. When COVID first shut down much of the nation, we moved our engineering labs into our homes. When many were losing their jobs, we had the honor of hiring. We now have a team of 7 engineers working innovatively together. We have a marketing team, researchers, scientists, and have expanded our dental advisory board. With your support RYCA’s doors remain open. I have said countless times: It takes a village.  We cherish our growing community, now nearing 6,000 strong (including Indiegogo backers).

 

We’re excited to provide some product development updates:

 

There are essentially two separate engineering/manufacturing efforts happening simultaneously: The Encompass brush HANDLE & the Encompass brush HEAD.

 

The Handle:

The handle is comprised of dozens of precision pieces, including the motor, diaphragm, PCB, light indicator and unique head coupling system.

After months of around the clock work, the handle is in the very last stages of engineering and the heavy lifting is shifting to our world-class manufacturing partners. This is a major milestone. The “tech” and sophistication of the handle has exceeded my very high standards. I’m incredibly proud of our engineers who have designed a world class handle.

TIMELINE: It is still possible our brush handles will be manufactured, safety tested and ready to go by December. But there are so many uncertainties. Potential COVID delays with tooling. Potential COVID related delays in shipping of the various components that must make their way to our manufacturer. Potential delays that may arise from any safety testing issues which must be resolved prior to shipping.  
 HANDLE CONCLUSION: December is possible, but delays into Q1of 2021 are likely. Far less likely, but possible, would be delays into Q2 of 2021.

 

The Brush Head:

Our patented air-driven system does make our brush handle unique, but the “special sauce” of Encompass has always been the one-of-a-kind J-shaped brush head. I mentioned in the last update that we were in the process of conducting precision tests on each element of the brush head, including bristle material selection, size, angle and force. Each of these components must work in parallel with the material selection for the brush head walls, which themselves must be tested and optimized for flexibility/adjustability. As our head engineer always says, “The devil is in the details.” We are still testing. No one is more excited to get Encompass in your hands, but these critical steps can’t be rushed. Our team is studying and mapping each and every variation of male and female teeth/mouth sizes across all ethnicities and taking into consideration malocclusions and gag reflexes, and this data is synced with our test results on flexibility/adjustability of the brush head. Like fashion, fit and comfort are key to our success, and we have to get this right. We are getting close. Once we finalize each of these critical components, the brush head development will shift from engineering to manufacturing.

TIMELINE: Because we haven’t yet shifting to manufacturing, it’s probably fair to say the brush head is a bit behind the brush handle. The various potential delays describe above also hold true for the brush head. Having said that, depending on what final material selection proves most effective, we may have some opportunities to “make up” some manufacturing time and actually catch up to the brush handle efforts.

HEAD CONCLUSION: While there is an outside chance December is doable, Q1 of 2021 is far more likely. Again far less likely, but possible, would be delays into Q2 of 2021.

 

Other Updates:

NEW IP: Our robust testing is not only paving the way for optimal brush design; it is also revealing new IP opportunities. In addition to our existing patents, our engineers are working with our patent attorneys to file additional IP around our one-of-a-kind brush head.

 

MARKETING: We have hired an incredible CMO (Chief Marketing Officer), Mike Isaac (https://www.linkedin.com/in/isaacmike/). A quick search will reveal Mike brings the perfect combination of big brand experience (Jack Daniels), along with mission driven work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. We are truly fortunate to welcome Mike to our team.

 

OTHER RECENT HIRES: Our head engineer, Jerry Brewer, has recently added more former Sonicare and Clarisonic engineers, further establishing our team as having truly unparalleled brush design experience.

At RYCA we always knew the journey to revolutionize the oral care industry would be a long, hard, exhilarating, and at times, frustrating. For us, like so many companies and individuals, it has been key milestones that keep us energized and motivated: Being hit with the initial idea. Building a team of world class design, engineering, marketing, manufacturing, and regulatory experts. Holding the first Prototype. Publishing our 21-claim patent. Receiving our International trademark for ENCOMPASS™. These are the moments that refill our tanks. And yesterday was one of those moments. Yesterday over 1,700 Start Engine investors put us over the $1,000,000 mark. It’s a moment, and a milestone, we will never forget. Start Engine allows me to click on my “INVESTMENTS” tab to see all our investors. It is deeply humbling to see over 1,700 names, the vast majority of whom I do not know (YET ), who have put their trust and treasure in our company. From everyone at RYCA, we thank you. Our first thoughts will always be for the health and happiness of you and your families. We truly hope everyone is doing ok.

 

We’re excite to share a couple key updates:

 

1. FUNDRAISING

We're incredibly moved and thrilled to share we just hit 1000 investors for a total of $560K.  Combine this with the $440K + on Indiegogo, and we have surpassed $1MIL from over 4,400 supporters. For us at Ryca this is so much more that stats and figures. This is motivation to deliver on our promise, validation that our solutions are needed, and deep gratification that our community is growing.

 

2. MANUFACTURING

Encompass brushes are coming off the Team Technologies factory line this week. Our first round of brushes will be in our hands Thursday. This is the beginning of the final manufacturing journey, not the end. We will be learning from and modifying these brushes. But this is a giant engineering and manufacturing milestone.
