We believe PurposeEnergy is paving the way for food and beverage production environments of all sizes to process, utilize, and reclaim organic waste. Our solutions are built to reduce the manufacturing costs and reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing food.


Our patented technologies, integrated with best-of-class components, allow us to provide custom wastewater and byproduct treatment solutions that are tailored for regional waste products and government regulations.


PurposeEnergy has commissioned six industrial facilities in the United States and the seventh, the first international project, is currently under construction in Taiwan. Three more projects are positioned to break ground in the United States over the next year.

Food and beverage manufacturing is being squeezed on all sides by emerging environmental regulations.


State and federal climate initiatives are demanding the replacement of fossil fuels with sustainable green energy alternatives. This is a critical issue for the food and beverage industry who, according to the United States Energy Information Administration (US EIA), consumes more than 1/20th of US manufacturing energy. Thermal energy in particular is essential for pasteurization and refrigeration processes to keep food safe from pathogens. The transition from low-cost fossil fuels to low-carbon intensity energy sources tends to drive up the cost of food.


In parallel, organics bans are forcing food manufacturers to find alternatives for disposing of product residuals. Many state governments, including California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont, have adopted organic waste bans that prohibit large producers of organic waste from sending it to landfills.


Furthermore, wastewater permits now include limits on organic loading and nutrient concentrations. These limits constrain food manufacturing capacities and encourage manufacturers to truck byproducts offsite for disposal. These new regulations make it more costly and more difficult to produce food.


While these regulations all trend to increase the cost of food, PurposeEnergy has demonstrated the ability to mitigate all of these constraints and reduce the cost of food production.

This company was created to have a positive impact on the world. Our engineers and scientists invented new solutions that convert waste into renewable energy, clean water, and natural fertilizer. This applies directly to the food and beverage industry which generates waste and consumes both water and energy.


Food and beverage byproducts are categorically high in organic and nutrient content. These byproducts are far more concentrated than domestic wastewater, which poses a treatment challenge for the municipal treatment plants.


Municipal treatment plants impose surcharge fees and, for highly concentrated byproducts, trucking the waste is the only option available for disposal. Some industrial production plants have even seen discharge limits capped, hindering their ability to increase production.



PurposeEnergy is on a mission to take the burden out of byproduct management and turn it into an opportunity for any food and beverage manufacturer. We believe we are helping industry convert these byproducts to renewable natural gas (RNG) and clean water, while eliminating costly surcharge fees and trucking costs.


High organic concentrations, which pose problems for municipal treatment plants, are advantageous for PurposeEnergy because organic concentration is stoichiometrically related to energy potential. Organic load is converted to renewable natural gas (RNG) that supports energy independence for food and beverage manufacturing. RNG can be injected into the natural gas pipeline, used to generate renewable electricity, and used to provide renewable thermal energy.


The nutrients in food and beverage waste are concentrated into natural fertilizers that replace imported commercial fertilizers used by farmers to grow crops.


PurposeEnergy’s team has decades of experience in designing and supplying on-site industrial wastewater treatment and reuse systems. This experience allows PurposeEnergy to provide complete end-to-end treatment systems that can meet any treated water quality requirement while recovering valuable byproducts in the form of renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertilizer.




Most anaerobic digesters were developed for agricultural (manure) applications or municipal sewerage applications. PurposeEnergy, in contrast, has developed technology for industrial applications.


The biggest difference is the need for industrial digesters to produce high quality effluent.

  • On a farm, all of the digestate is ultimately land applied like manure, so there is no need for high quality digestate.
  • In municipal settings, digesters are used to reduce sludge volume. The reduced sludge is dried and landfilled, again reducing the need for high quality effluent.
  • In industrial settings, the feedstocks to the digester have orders of magnitude higher organic load concentrations than agricultural waste or municipal waste and the effluent needs to be treated to the quality of sanitary sewer waste to be compliant with the facility’s environmental permits. In most cases this requires over 99% reduction in organic load.



For projects owned by PurposeEnergy, recurring revenue is generated by the sale of renewable energy that is produced by our facilities. We also have feedstock agreements that define the “tipping fees” waste producers pay us to mitigate their waste streams. Since the tipping fees are less than what the waste producer would otherwise pay to dispose of their waste, PurposeEnergy reduces costs for our customers.


For projects financed and owned by our customers, PurposeEnergy sells proprietary equipment and services for construction, commissioning, and operator training.


PurposeEnergy’s solutions feature the patented Tribrid-Bioreactor™ – the highest methane conversion efficiency digester on the planet. The Tribrid-Bioreactor™ technology has been patent protected in the United States, Japan, Mexico, China, and the European Union. Our facilities are engineered foremost to be robust, with redundancy for all critical processes and real-time mobile apps for process monitoring and control. Proven Solutions, Proven Track Record

PurposeEnergy was founded in June of 2007 when natural gas prices were at an all-time high. Our first customer was a regional craft brewery who was facing environmental compliance issues due to their rapid growth.


Today PurposeEnergy continues to generate revenue and renewable energy at this digester facility in South Burlington, VT. The facility features a 460,000 gallon magnumDigester™ Tribrid-Bioreactor™, which is PurposeEnergy 's patented anaerobic digester. Since commissioning, this facility has export over 8-million kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity to the grid with zero downtime and 100% compliance with permits and regulations. About half of the waste volume processed at this facility is produced by the brewery (Zero Gravity Craft Brewery). The other half is imported from regional manufacturers like WhistlePig Distillery, Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, and Autumn Harp. The South Burlington facility has emerged as a regional food waste-to-energy solution that has been recognized by Entrepreneur Magazine, Power Engineering, and AlwaysOn as a Going Green Top 50 winner.


Other companies leading the way with PurposeEnergy:

  • In 2013 the Company executed a contract to supply a magnumDigester™ Tribrid-Bioreactor™ to Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, DE.
  • Craft Brew Alliance contracted with PurposeEnergy in 2016 to build the Kona Resource Recovery Center at a greenfield brewery in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
  • In 2018 Fiddlehead Brewery executed an agreement for PurposeEnergy to finance and build a metaDigester™ Tribrid-Bioreactor™ facility. Wholly owned subsidiary PurposeEnergy Finance, LLC was formed to provide capital lease structures to PurposeEnergy’s customers. In a separate contract, Fiddlehead retained PurposeEnergy to operate and maintain the facility.
  • Gaia Herbs executed a contract with PurposeEnergy in 2018 to furnish a metaDigester™ Tribrid-Bioreactor™ at its Brevard, NC manufacturing facility.
  • In 2018 Finestkind Brewing, maker of Smuttynose beer, executed a design-build agreement with PurposeEnergy to provide a metaDigester™ Tribrid-Bioreactor™ system.
  • In 2020 Tung Sugar, a joint venture between Tai Sugar and Tung Ho Steel, retained PurposeEnergy to engineer a merchant food-waste digester facility in Nei Pu Township, Taiwan. The successful outcome of the engineering project led to a contract in 2021 for PurposeEnergy to design and deliver a magnumDigester™ Tribrid-Bioreactor™ for Tung Sugar. The project is currently under construction and scheduled to be the first international project commissioned by PurposeEnergy in 2022.

Within two years, PurposeEnergy plans to build and commission three new facilities that have already been fully contracted. Having completed detailed engineering and permitting, the first of these facilities is shovel ready. The other two have nearly completed permitting and detailed engineering. These numbers will support an acquisition by private equity or a strategic partner. Alternatively, the company will be able to sustainably grow by developing new projects at an even faster rate.


Before these facilities commence operations, PurposeEnergy needs to have trained and skilled staff to run them. Equity capital raised through this Reg-CF financing will be used to hire and train operating staff at PurposeEnergy’s existing facilities so they can smoothly transition to the new facilities upon commissioning.
