Food and beverage byproducts are categorically high in organic and nutrient content. These byproducts are far more concentrated than domestic wastewater, which poses a treatment challenge for the municipal treatment plants.
Municipal treatment plants impose surcharge fees and, for highly concentrated byproducts, trucking the waste is the only option available for disposal. Some industrial production plants have even seen discharge limits capped, hindering their ability to increase production.
PurposeEnergy is on a mission to take the burden out of byproduct management and turn it into an opportunity for any food and beverage manufacturer. We believe we are helping industry convert these byproducts to renewable natural gas (RNG) and clean water, while eliminating costly surcharge fees and trucking costs.
High organic concentrations, which pose problems for municipal treatment plants, are advantageous for PurposeEnergy because organic concentration is stoichiometrically related to energy potential. Organic load is converted to renewable natural gas (RNG) that supports energy independence for food and beverage manufacturing. RNG can be injected into the natural gas pipeline, used to generate renewable electricity, and used to provide renewable thermal energy.
The nutrients in food and beverage waste are concentrated into natural fertilizers that replace imported commercial fertilizers used by farmers to grow crops.
PurposeEnergy’s team has decades of experience in designing and supplying on-site industrial wastewater treatment and reuse systems. This experience allows PurposeEnergy to provide complete end-to-end treatment systems that can meet any treated water quality requirement while recovering valuable byproducts in the form of renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertilizer.
Most anaerobic digesters were developed for agricultural (manure) applications or municipal sewerage applications. PurposeEnergy, in contrast, has developed technology for industrial applications.
The biggest difference is the need for industrial digesters to produce high quality effluent.
- On a farm, all of the digestate is ultimately land applied like manure, so there is no need for high quality digestate.
- In municipal settings, digesters are used to reduce sludge volume. The reduced sludge is dried and landfilled, again reducing the need for high quality effluent.
- In industrial settings, the feedstocks to the digester have orders of magnitude higher organic load concentrations than agricultural waste or municipal waste and the effluent needs to be treated to the quality of sanitary sewer waste to be compliant with the facility’s environmental permits. In most cases this requires over 99% reduction in organic load.
For projects owned by PurposeEnergy, recurring revenue is generated by the sale of renewable energy that is produced by our facilities. We also have feedstock agreements that define the “tipping fees” waste producers pay us to mitigate their waste streams. Since the tipping fees are less than what the waste producer would otherwise pay to dispose of their waste, PurposeEnergy reduces costs for our customers.
For projects financed and owned by our customers, PurposeEnergy sells proprietary equipment and services for construction, commissioning, and operator training.
