Reasons to Invest

$3.6 million in revenue in 2018 -- 1200% growth from 2017
#5 paid app in the entire Apple iTunes App Store in 2018; 30 million total installs as of September 15, 2019
Partnered with the American Public Garden Association (APGA) and Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) to distribute PlantSnap to all of the visitors to their 1200+ botanic gardens around the world, which get a combined 700 million visitors per year

PlantSnap reconnects people with the world around them

It's important for us to understand that we are a part of nature, not apart from it, and that it's our responsibility to protect our world for future generations. So, we created a tool that encourages people to stop and explore the beauty and wonder of the world they live in. We hope to find like-minded individuals to join us on this journey to complete our growing global plant database in a timely manner, and further our goals of stirring up excitement about getting re-acquainted with the great outdoors. By bringing people back to nature and helping them feel like they are an integral part of this amazing planet, together we can help them understand that we are stewards of the Earth, not owners.

Traditional methods for identifying plants are inconvenient and difficult

Plant identification books are often narrow in scope, expensive, and cumbersome. They are not meant to be kept in your pocket for quick access when you're out in nature. In 2012, CEO and Founder Eric Ralls was at a friend's BBQ when he noticed a large plant with beautiful flowers in the backyard. No one at the party knew what kind of plant it was. He tried describing it in a google search but turned up no helpful results. He sifted through websites with the region's plants, but no luck. He looked for a plant identification app, but none existed. That's when the idea for PlantSnap was born.

PlantSnap uses AI to identify plants with just a picture

PlantSnap not only reconnects people to nature but also creates a database of plants that provides useful information to hobbyists and professionals alike. PlantSnap is translated into 37 languages and currently used in over 200 countries every day. With over 620,000 plants now in our database and 32 million installs so far, PlantSnap has become THE go-to app for gardeners, hikers, landscape designers, teachers, students, foragers, and anyone who enjoys nature. At PlantSnap, we’re reigniting interest in the beauty and wonder of nature that surrounds us every day, while empowering scientists and nature enthusiasts with the technology to catalog and share their discoveries.

10X Year-over-Year revenue growth and 32M downloads are just the beginning

With two successful StartEngine crowdfunding campaigns under our belt and increased accessibility now that our app is available in 37 languages and used in over 200 countries, our user-generated database has grown considerably with an average of 500,000+ user photos a day and reached some impressive milestones.

To say we finished 2018 strong is an understatement:

  • #5 paid app in the entire Apple iTunes app store with 30 Million total installs
  • $3.6 Million in revenue (a 10X+ revenue increase from 2017)
  • Partnered with American Public Garden Association (APGA) and Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI) to distribute PlantSnap to people who visit their 1200+ botanic gardens around the world, which receive a combined 700 million+ visitors per year
  • 620,000 different plants and over 250 million images stored in our database
  • Built and launched 2 new PlantSnap apps (MushroomSnap completed and waiting to be released, PlantCatch 75% complete and InsectSnap in production)

Secured some incredible partnerships

On top of our existing botanical partnerships, we have also completed our first major sponsorship campaign with Mrs. Meyers Cleaning Products for Earth Month in April of this year. Using PlantSnap, people could snap a photo of a plant and discover whether it was endangered or not in real time. If it was, we asked them to take a picture instead of picking the flower. With each purchase of affiliated products, they would plant the endangered purple coneflower in its preservation garden. To date, they've distributed and planted more than 270,000 purple coneflowers. The campaign was so successful that the agency created this case study and video, which was selected as an entrant in the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

We have a large international market for our product and data

The plant and garden market is a $340B per year global industry. For a detailed analysis of the industry, this study highlights plant/garden sales in the US market. Here you can find gardening market reports for dozens of other countries. For comparison, global music sales are roughly $20B per year. There is also a $10B advertising and marketing industry to coincide with our targeted, precise customer base. We are the world's largest geolocated plant database with detailed geolocated customer information that is of increasing value to the market to power sophisticated location-based ad targeting. Through Facebook analytics, we've identified 1.8B potential global users.

How it Works

  • Take a Photo - Snap a pic of any plant, flower, tree, cacti, succulent or mushroom and receive results in about 5 seconds. In the wilderness with no internet? No problem! Just save the photo to your phone and analyze with PlantSnap once you have a data connection.
  • Learn and Discover - Upload, and instantly identify your plant. Learn facts such as where else you can find the plant, its growth habit, its edibility and more.
  • Keep Track of It All - Compile your discoveries in one place—never forget where you found a plant or what it's called. Be prepared to find all the plants in your area!
  • Be a part of our Global Citizen Science initiative -- Simply by snapping photos of plants wherever you go, you will play an integral role in this massive, global initiative to map, catalog and evaluate every known plant species on Earth. This data will then be used by scientific organizations and universities around the world to conserve and save plant species, thereby protecting our environment and the global ecosystem.

We're creating and sharing a valuable database of plants on earth

We have a patent-pending training process for a machine learning algorithm used to identify plants with just a photo. When someone performs a simple scan of their surroundings with a phone camera, our new auto-detect technology identifies leaves and flowers in the area. Our algorithm is roughly 94% accurate for the 620,000+ plants and 250M+ images trained into the algorithm. It also gathers anonymous data from users that can be used for education, gaming, safety, gardening, landscaping and much more.

We have both subscription and Ad-Based revenue streams

PlantSnap Pro - Paid App sold for $19.99

Subscriptions - Premium Memberships - monthly, annually subscriptions give PlantSnap a recurring revenue stream

Ad Revenue - Our indirect revenue stream comes from ads in the free version of the app.

  • In-app ad campaigns with ad networks, including Google and Facebook, placed through AdMob, average eCPM of $3.95.
  • Launched our own ad serving platform for direct advertising campaigns, significant increase in eCPM

Retail and Ecommerce - Largest unmonetized revenue channel

  • “GET” button within the App has been developed and implemented but not monetized
  • "GET" button driving over 200,000 customers linking to outside ecommerce partners/month

PlantSnap was displayed on the Apple stage when they were giving details on the new iPhone 11 Pro.

Our App provides instantaneous results and no guesswork

Most plant identifying apps can identify no more than 5000 species, at most. They also use crowdsourcing to generate data, which takes time, days or more, and can be a major source of frustration for those looking for quick answers. We’ve managed to create a system, using auto-detect and augmented reality, that allows you to upload a photo and instantly get detailed information of the snapped plant with no guesswork or human interaction involved. PlantSnap has over 620,000 plants in our searchable database which provides instant results and it is translated into 37 languages. This means that PlantSnap will work in any country on Earth, for 95% of the global population.

PlantSnap is the digital interface to bring people and nature together

We believe technology is the answer. With PlantSnap, we hope to bring people back to nature by putting an application on their phones that will allow them to instantly identify any plant, flower or tree simply by snapping a photo. We want to take this a step further by helping people to reconnect with not only nature but also each other. We are launching PlantSnap 3.0 in late September which will incorporate a social component called PlantSnappers. This will allow people to "Friend" other PlantSnappers around the world, share photos, share gardening tips, etc.

To further this mission, we have a lineup of other developments for PlantSnap in the works:

  • PlantSnap Social - PlantSnappers launched as part of PlantSnap 3.0 in September 2019
  • MushroomSnap - development complete, ready for launch
  • PlantCatch - gamified version of PlantSnap similar to PokemonGo, Spring 2020 Launch
  • InsectSnap - early stage development, patents, trademarks and copyrights in place

Calling all Plantsnappers! A way to connect and share your findings

The goal of PlantSnappers is to connect you to other plant lovers and plant professionals. Our intention is not to replace other social media platforms but offer one that is only for plants. We hope that PlantSnappers will give you an outlet in which to share your enthusiasm for plants and your love of nature and our environment with like-minded people all over the world!

  • Share your favorite findings and discoveries with friends. You can share plant photos straight from your camera roll and PlantSnap will automatically identify the plant for you when it posts
  • Comment and interact with your favorite posts made by your friends
  • Share tips and ask advice on gardening and plant care
  • Connect with a global community of plant lovers all over the world who use PlantSnap in over 200 countries

With this database, PlantSnap helps users determine what plants they're looking at, and answer the questions they may have, such as:

  • Is it poisonous or medicinal?
  • Is it beneficial or intrusive?
  • Can this grow in my region?
  • How do I care for this plant?

Blending a love for technology and a love for nature

As the founder of RedOrbit and current CEO of both Earth.com and PlantSnap, Eric Ralls has long aspired to merge technology with a love for nature and our planet. Eric is a serial entrepreneur. After graduating from Vanderbilt University with degrees in psychology and Japanese, Eric then attended Thunderbird School for International Management. Seeing the business potential of the internet, Eric then jumped into technology in the early days of the internet boom in 1998, merging the latest innovations with his love for the planet.

Join us in reconnecting with nature and preserving our home

Investing in PlantSnap is investing in the future of our planet. Reconnecting people to nature is key to them understanding the beauty, wonder, and fragility of our world. Our first major sponsorship campaign with Mrs. Meyers cleaning products for Earth Month was so successful that the ad agency Ogilvy did a case study for it and created a video which was chosen for the Cannes International Festival for Creativity - and this is just the beginning. Together, we can build a bridge to nature that everyone from the everyday nature lover to the lifelong career scientist can use to protect our home.

PlantSnap Update - Happy Earth Month, StartEngine Campaign Ending, PlantSnap Launches in China!

Happy Earth Month from PlantSnap!

BREAKING NEWS - PlantSnap Launches in Mainland China!

As of today, April 23, 2020, PlantSnap is now published and available for sale in mainland China! This was a long and arduous process, and we are thrilled beyond words to have achieved this goal.

Roughly 750 million people in China have smart phones, and they now have access to PlantSnap, giving them the ability to learn and interact with nature and the plant kingdom every day through their ever-present mobile devices.

Stay tuned for more about this unique partnership as PlantSnap continues our ascent to the number one educational app in the world!

Over $500,000 raised

Wow, what a wonderful ride and we want to give a boisterous "Thank you!" to all of our investors who have made this newest milestone possible.  We are grateful and excited about the future of educational apps, PlantSnap, and our new investors!

But unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and our Start Engine campaign is no exception.  We were able to extend the campaign a few extra weeks recently, but the last day to invest will be April 29th, 2020 at midnight eastern.

Major Partnership Announcement Delayed

Although we are disappointed that the worldwide pandemic delayed our major partnership announcement until the summer months, we feel fortunate that our company and our employees have both remained healthy in 2020.  In fact, the stay-at-home orders across the globe have actually been a powerful sales boost for quality, educational software like PlantSnap.

According to Technavio Research released in early February, the global education apps market was expected to grow by roughly $47 billion during 2020-2024 according to the latest, pre-pandemic market research.  Technavio stated that "the increasing STEM-based job opportunities coupled with the growing demand for STEM-based apps will drive the education apps market during the forecast period.  These technologies improve communication between teachers and students by facilitating a platform for sharing ideas, implementing processes, and exchanging feedback.

Increase in penetration of phone internet, growing government initiatives, rising demand for game-based learning, and mounting emphasis on technology-based course delivery are few other factors expected to trigger the education apps market growth during the forecast period"

Based on our experience so far during the pandemic, those estimates will need revision upward.

For more on the future of educational software, download a free sample of Technavio's report here:

In the press

It's easy for us to talk about the greatness of PlantSnap, but WAY more fun with other folks do the honors!  As summer approaches in the northern hemisphere, PlantSnap enters prime downloading season.

Dublin's "The Irish Times" says to be sure and download PlantSnap before exploring the outdoors:

And The National Gallery of Ireland recommends PlantSnap when discovering new plants:

https://www.nationalgallery.ie/art-and-artists/exhibitions/drawn-nature-irish-botanical-art/wonder-weeds

The United Kingdom's "Evening Standard" reports that PlantSnap is a "hero" when it comes to plant identification:

While the British newspaper "The Independent" calls PlantSnap "a welcome tool in learning more about what’s growing among the foliage."

PlantSnap Update -- Huawei, Huge Partnerships, Spring is coming to the Northern Hemisphere...

PlantSnap Launches in Huawei AppGallery

Pop quiz...what company is the second largest phone maker in the world? If you said Huawei, you are correct!

Huawei's phones have become so popular around the world because of their well-rounded product portfolio, which includes high-end smartphones in its Mate and P lines as well as cheaper handsets that fall under its Honor offshoot brand. Selling over 250 million phones in 2019 alone, Huawei is "within striking distance of Samsung at the top of the global market," says the International Data Corporation.

For those of you with a Huawei phone, you can now find both PlantSnap Pro AND PlantSnap Freemium in the new Huawei AppGallery, which distributes apps that are built using the new mobile platform called Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). Above is a screenshot from PlantSnap's app in the HMS AppGallery.

PlantSnap has formed a strong partnership with Huawei and will now create all of our apps in iOS, Android and HMS. Not only did Huawei compensate PlantSnap incredibly well for building and launching our apps in HMS, they also provided us with a crew of HMS engineers to help us with production and will also be featuring and promoting PlantSnap in the AppGallery for free throughout 2020.

Here is why this new partnership with Huawei is so important. Beginning in May, new Huawei phones are no longer allowed to contain the Google PlayStore that distributes Android apps. This means that no apps currently in the Google PlayStore can be used on new Huawei phones. Huawei sells over 200 million mobile phones per year, so launching PlantSnap in the new Huawei operating system, HMS, gives continued access to PlantSnap for all Huawei phone users.

PlantSnap StartEngine Campaign Continues Strong Upward Trajectory

Our StartEngine campaign has almost reached the $500,000 milestone, thanks to the generosity of our StartEngine investors, and there aren't many days left in the campaign.

Now is the time to join us as an investor, or to increase your current investment, as we continue to ramp up our spring efforts with the BGCI and APGA and their 1,200 botanical garden members. Beginning in April 2020, visitors to these gardens and to their websites and social media pages will be actively encouraged to download PlantSnap on their mobile devices and participate in our Citizen Scientist project as they explore the amazing botanical gardens and their local environments.  These beautiful gardens boast over 700 million visitors every year and will deliver sustainable exposure to PlantSnap year-round and across the world.

And now, PlantSnap has also secured a new partnership agreement with a fellow tech company that has over 300 million monthly active users. This partnership will equate to even GREATER exposure for the app in 2020. After 6 months of hard work, the integration process with our new mobile partner is complete and currently in the final stages of beta testing. Stay tuned for our exciting joint announcement with our new partner on April 2!

Unfortunately, the new partnership will be announced in 16 days...that's 10 days after the StartEngine campaign ends...  so now is the time to join us as an investor!

Users love PlantSnap

We are always thrilled when PlantSnap makes the news (check out our amazing press coverage here), but it is also exciting when we see folks using the app and promoting it as fans and educators.

The Anita B Gorman Conservation Discovery Center in Kansas City hosts classes on how to use PlantSnap for children and adults through the Missouri Department of Conservation.  Our app has become a true tool for professionals and amateurs alike.

You can read more here:

*Prunus subhirtella ꞌAutumnalisꞌ in bloom

Higan Cherry (P. subhirtella)

Mature Height/Spread: The Higan cherry will grow 20 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 30 feet wide. The habit may be upright-spreading, rounded or weeping, depending on the cultivar.

Growth Rate: Some of the most heat, cold and stress-tolerant of all the cherries, they are longer-lived than most.

Ornamental Features: Bloom occurs from early to mid-spring, depending on the cultivar. The showy flowers are white or pale to deep pink, single or double, and appear before or with the leaves. In summer, leaves are dark green, turning yellowish in the fall.

Landscape Use: Higan cherries are mainly used as lawn specimens, street trees and in groupings. Wide-spreading and weeping cultivars make good shade trees.

They prefer moist, fast-draining, well-aerated soil, and require full sun. Pruning is seldom necessary except to remove dead or diseased wood, or crossing branches that appear awkward or rub against each other. To avoid reducing the following year’s flower display, prune crossing or rubbing branches immediately after flowering. Prune dead or diseased wood any time of year. (credit: Clemson University)

PlantSnap: A Case Study

PlantSnap's 30-day user retention rate currently sits at a whopping 39%, compared to the industry average of 5% user retention after 30 days, and CleverTap has been instrumental in helping us understand our user data.  According to the website, CleverTap is the "only platform that uses Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to personalize the customer experience using real-time behavioral data. These precise predictive models result in timely, relevant engagement opportunities based on each user’s exact needs."

CleverTap was kind enough to recently feature PlantSnap in a case study that discussed our industry-leading user retention rates. The study includes how PlantSnap accelerated user acquisition with a freemium model and how freemium users are converted to premium users.

PlantSnap Primed for 2020

Happy 2020 from PlantSnap!

In this update:

- Investing milestone

Over $400,000 Invested

Another thank you to all of our investors who have pushed PlantSnap over the $400,000 milestone!

With less than 2 months left to become a part of PlantSnap, we'd like to share this kind note from one of our investors about the PlantSnap opportunity:

Eric (& Team),

In a world full of negativity, I thought I would send you and your team a quick note to say how excited I am to be a part of PlantSnap! This app is literally the kind of thing (ie, THE thing) I dreamed of as a kid … “If only there was a way to just know what this flower is … Oh, or, what that flower over there is. Sigh, maybe someday in the future.”

Imagine my surprise when I first read about PlantSnap, did a little research, watched the video (Hey, Eric’s brother!) and decided I needed PlantSnap in my life. In the past few years, it has been awesome to see how the app has matured, expanded and continued to push the boundaries of a truly awesome use of technology for non-technological interests. Due to circumstances at the time, I wasn’t able to be a part of the first StartEngine campaign (wayyy back), so I am beyond stoked to have had another chance to invest – even just a little bit – into a group of awesome people working on an amazing suite of products.

Looking forward to what comes next!

- Gregory A.

Thank you to Gregory and to ALL of our current and future investors.  Please continue to spread the word as there are only two months left to become a part of PlantSnap!

New Partnership Announcement in 64 Days

PlantSnap's partnership opportunities continue!

Our current partnerships start this month with the BGCI and APGA .  These two organizations and their 1,200 botanical garden members will actively encourage visitors to download PlantSnap and participate in our Citizen Scientist project to map every plant species on earth by 2022.

These beautiful gardens boast over 700 Million visitors every year and will be working with us hand-in-hand to install PlantSnap on the mobile device of every visitor.

And now PlantSnap has inked another, new partnership agreement...this time with a fellow tech company!

Alas, we cannot announce anything more for now, but rest assured this partnership is going to be more fuel for immediate growth this spring as we build upon our already massive 30 Million plus downloads.

The new partnership will be announced10 days after the StartEngine campaign ends, so there has never been a better time to invest!

PlantSnap back on Television

We were thrilled to learn that ABC affiliate KATC in Louisiana included PlantSnap in a special report about must-have mobile apps!

Please take a moment to watch KATC's "Abby's Apps" with host Abby Breidenbach as she explains the wonders of PlantSnap:

https://www.katc.com/community/gma/abbys-apps-plant-snap

The media has been very kind to PlantSnap and our app's credibility has never been higher.

Thank you to Abby, KATC, and all of those in the media who continue to champion PlantSnap!

PlantSnap Social tops 535,000 in January

The growth of the PlantSnap social component continues to impress as we now have over 500,000 unique users per month in that area alone. The amount of unique users has doubled every month since the November rollout...amazing!

By giving users yet another reason to open PlantSnap, we are able to keep our retention rates above our mobile app peers.  Learn more about retention, why it is important, and how PlantSnap is the envy of the mobile app world here:

"Retention is the new acquisition"

Happy Holidays from PlantSnap!

In this update:

- "Gift of Ownership" Offer Expiring

"Retention is the new acquisition"

The phrase "retention is the new acquisition" is a new but familiar refrain when it comes to making money with software, but what exactly does that mean?

For software companies like ours, it simply means that just because someone downloaded our software, that doesn't mean they are using it!

The proliferation of "free apps" -- or more appropriately "apps supported by advertising" -- has conditioned many app store customers to hastily download software before considering if they will use it. The availability of such a low commitment option to the consumer means that app store customers are easily convinced to download an app but not necessarily the right customer for the product.

But PlantSnap's retention rates are among the highest in the entire app industry for both Apple and Android and boasts over 33 Million downloads.

How do we do this?

PlantSnap CEO Eric Ralls sits down with Peggy Anne Salz for the "Mobile Presence" podcast to discuss how we keep our retention rates sky-high month in and month out:

More awards, this time from Europe!

Even though 2020 will mark our 3rd year helping folks identify plants, we are still amazed at the amount of fresh and positive press coverage PlantSnap receives internationally throughout the four seasons.

Our most recent accolades come from "Mighty Gadget" in the United Kingdom where PlantSnap was named a "Top 5 Gardening App":

https://mightygadget.co.uk/contact/

It is also fun to note that although it isn't a prime gardening season in the UK, PlantSnap is still top-of-mind worldwide as folks prepare for 2020.

2020 is going to be PlantSnap's biggest year yet and we are excited to have you with us!

PlantSnap social feed growing

PlantSnap introduced an in-app social feed for users this fall, and user activity TRIPLED over the last 30 days in the feed!  Our PlantSnappers absolutely love being able to share plant photos and see what other users are finding all over the world.

Be sure and check out the family-friendly PlantSnappers feed in the lower-left corner of PlantSnap for both Android and Apple on the app!

Over $280,000 raised on StartEngine

We are halfway to our fundraising goal and a special thank you to all that have joined this amazing journey.  PlantSnap is poised for a giant 2020 and we welcome you aboard!

Worldwide Growth

Greetings from PlantSnap Headquarters in Colorado!

Colorado in winter

While winter approaches in North America, PlantSnap will begin a rolling close on investments as we continue to facilitate growth in the southern hemisphere.

Unlike most companies in the plant and garden space, PlantSnap's worldwide presence and availability in 37 languages ensure that there are always potential users.

Like right now in Brazil!

Brazil

PlantSnap's strong reputation in the worldwide press keeps us top of mind as a recommended product, and on November 3rd Brazil's popular "Gazeta do Povo" recommended PlantSnap to their readers interested in plant care:

We are very proud of the hard work that went into making PlantSnap an international product, and we hope that you will join us as we work to put PlantSnap in the hands of nature lovers across the globe!

StartEngine campaign

What a first week!

PlantSnap and StartEngine welcomed 250 investors to the campaign and we have now raised over $180,000.  Thank you!

Help PlantSnap plants trees for free

PlantSnap and Trees.org have partnered to plant more trees on behalf of folks who share a photo on social media.

Yes, it's that simple!

Over 7500 PlantSnap and tree lovers have already participated!

Get started here:

https://plantsnap.cheerity.com/home

Why are we helping to plant more trees?

The answer here from Trees.org:

Problem: we lose trees at a rate of 50 soccer fields per minute as our food systems destroy our ecosystems. Most of this degradation occurs in the developing tropics of Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia where hundreds of millions of chronically-hungry, smallholder farming families use destructive and short-sighted agricultural practices that further degrade their communities trees, soil, water and biodiversity, making them even more likely to migrate and more vulnerable to the climate changes that lie ahead.

Solution: The Forest Garden Program is a simple, replicable and scalable approach with proven success. By planting specific types of fast-growing trees, fruit trees, hardwoods and food crops in a systematic manner over a four year period, families can positively change their lives forever. Forest Gardens consist of thousands of trees that provide families with sustainable food sources, livestock feed, products to sell, fuel wood and a 400% increase in their annual income in four years.

The challenge we face is how to train hundreds of millions of farmers to plant Forest Gardens. Most smallholder farmers world-wide are low-literate, highly dispersed, chronically hungry, and living in extreme poverty. They own, on average, less than five acres, and are dependent upon tree products from local forests for their survival.

The big, hairy, audacious goal: we see converting degraded and denuded farmland into Forest Gardens one of the planet’s best ideas for eliminating hunger, extreme poverty, deforestation and for lessening humanity’s contributions to climate change. TREES’ Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal (BHAG) is to break the cycle of poverty and eradicate hunger for our first 1 million people by planting 500 million trees in 125,000 Forest Gardens by 2025. This will entail working with approximately 125,000 families to revitalize a quarter of a million acres, coupled with interventions at different levels of the value chain (related to inputs, credit, water and marketing) to ensure the long term sustainability and continual spread of Forest Gardens.

If we can grow a movement by convincing massive numbers of farmers across any given landscape to plant Forest Gardens, we can, first and foremost, eliminate chronic hunger and extreme poverty on that landscape, but even more, at scale we will have a program that can reverse deforestation and meaningfully begin to mitigate climate change.

Help PlantSnap support Trees.org by sharing a photo at https://plantsnap.cheerity.com/home and we'll plant a tree on your behalf today!
