Ever heard of brown emissions? They are the particulate matter from brake, tire, and road surface wear. They are considered to be a thousand times more harmful than tailpipe exhaust, responsible for millions of deaths each year. Urban driving exacerbates brown emissions, so naturally, it’s expected to become a major public and regulatory issue.



Pollution from Manufacturing and Mining


In brake manufacturing, CO2 is released into the atmosphere. Not to mention the mining of iron ore causes air pollution in the form of nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide from diesel generators, trucks and other equipment. How did NASA get involved with Orbis Brakes?  

Orbis Brakes' founder Marcus Hays, is a long time inventor and electric vehicle veteran. He holds multiple patents in electric vehicle powertrains, related automotive components, and clean-power technologies. His company, Orbis Wheels produces after-market motorized wheels for vehicles. These vehicles use the on-demand power to take the load off the truck engine and regenerate power when braking or driving downhill. The motor can also be engage and disengage as needed. This retrofit kit has also been developed for towables that easily adds responsiveness and power to just about any vehicle. This powertrain technology is getting a lot of press. Scientists at NASA heard about what Orbis was doing, contacted Marcus and offered their expertise in heat dissipation and add new cooling technology to brakes. Thus, the partnership was founded.

Enlisting NASA expertise in aerodynamics and heat dispersement, the “Periodic Wave” design separates braking surfaces by vanes that grab air from around the hub and use centrifugal force to sling it away from the contact area.

TESTING RESULTS AND INSIGHTS
To verify results, Orbis Brakes has partnered with Detroit-based Greening Test Laboratories,* a specialist in brake evaluations covering a complete range of vehicles.

THE SHELBY GT500 TEST
For a recent baseline test, we submitted a Orbis Brakes NextWave custom configured for a 2021 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The choice of this 4,200 lb. 760 hp, 200 mph powerhouse ensured results that would reflect the most demanding end of the braking spectrum. Our comparison brake was the Brembo equivalent.

Professional racecar driver, author, and television celebrity Paul Gerrard will be making a booth appearance and co-awarding the Orbis Brakes Stellar Performance in Braking Awards at the 2022 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 17- 20 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. 

 

A successful formula car racer and precision driving instructor, Gerrard earned a spotlight as the slightly mysterious automotive expert and performance evaluator known as “The Stig” on the hit show “Top Gear,” along with appearances on “Mythbusters,” “Speedmakers,” and “Supercars Exposed.” Garrard is also the author of the bestselling book Optimum Drive, detailing the technique of great drivers.

 

Garrard joins racing colleague Tim Moser, Orbis Brakes’ Validation Director, in judging and co-awarding the Orbis Brakes Stellar Performance in Braking Award, to be given to a deserving driver in the four-day Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Orbis Brakes will also be honoring Alex Zanardi with a special Stellar Performance award in recognition of his legendary pass during the 1996 Indy Finals at the same Laguna Seca track.

 

Orbis Brakes is marking its first sponsorship appearance as Preferred Brake of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Brake Innovator to Showcase New Product Line, Debut Stellar Performance Award at Renowned Vintage racing Event

Orbis Brakes is launching its innovative line of Periodic Wave™ disc brakes in a dramatic way, serving as the Preferred Brake of the 2022 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 17- 20 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

This year’s Rolex Reunion will curate the largest exhibition of winning or historically significant Le Mans cars ever assembled for display and exhibition laps. It is one of only two events worldwide to feature cars currently in private collections or museums returned to racetrack performance. The four-day event is a featured attraction of Monterey Car Week.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion represents the first event sponsorship for Orbis Brakes, the Northern California company that is making news through a partnership with NASA that produced the Periodic Wave™ disc brake, a proprietary design that uses advanced aerodynamics to provide superior surface cooling, reduce dangerous brake fade, and extend vehicle range and fuel efficiency. Orbis Brakes has also attracted attention with its potential to lower environmental impact. Weighing 50% less on average than conventional cast iron brakes, Orbis Brakes are expected to lower carbon consumption across the supply chain, while reducing harmful brown emissions.

Attendees at Laguna Seca will be given a first look at Orbis brake designs, including the NextWave™ and FutureWave™ models engineered to bridge the full brake spectrum.

Orbis will also use the Monterey spotlight to present the first ever Stellar Performance in Braking Award, an honor bestowed to drivers exhibiting superior braking maneuvers on the racetrack. The first award will be given to Alex Zanardi in honor of his last lap pass of Bryan Herta in the final race of the 1996 PPG Indy Car World Series at the same Laguna Seca raceway, still considered one of the greatest passes in the history of motorsports. Another Stellar Performance Award will be awarded to one of this year’s Rolex Reunion competitors as determined by a panel of judges. The Stellar Performance in Braking will become an ongoing award from Orbis, using in-car footage submitted by drivers and teams.

MotorTrend Delivers more Braking News on Orbis

Orbis Brakes is slated for more good news from MotorTrend. The influential automotive publication will feature Orbis in a July ’22 article by Frank Marcus titled  “NASA Enters Orbis: Otherworldly brakes help eliminate unsprung-weight penalty.”

The new article follows a lengthy March 3 feature in MotorTrend that declared: “There’s about to be a new name in lightweight, high-performance brakes: Orbis.”

Orbis Brakes Just Hit $100K!

To all our investors: 

THANK YOU! And welcome to the Orbis Brakes family.

We are ecstatic to announce that we just hit the $100K mark!  

We’ve had an amazing first 5 days on Start Engine. We will continue updating you with milestones, product updates and market news. 

Just to recap, the $20B automotive brake industry has seen very few improvements in the past 20 years, and we believe that we're poised to shake this industry up with our 50% lighter, more efficient, safer and more cost-effective disc brake.

Our engineering team with input from NASA has been focusing recently on a version of the brake that meets the requirement of 200mph cars. This version of the brake will be undergoing lab and track tests in the coming months and as soon as those results are in, we will publish those findings. Our expectations are high as the most recent lab report showed a 2-times faster rate of cooling than the leading competitor.
