Reasons Icon

Named one of TIME Magazine’s 2020 Best Inventions, Tombot’s realistic robotic animals were designed to help 50M+ seniors with dementia and mild cognitive impairment worldwide. This number is projected to reach 152M+ by 2050.

Reasons Icon

Tombot conducted three rounds of consumer studies involving 100’s of dementia patients during product design, demonstrating their strong preference for realism.

Reasons Icon

$4M+ in commitments from institutional and accredited angel investors, with 8,500+ pre-order and waitlist customers.

The Overview

A companion to provide comfort to those coping with dementia

The inspiration for Tombot emerged in 2011, when CEO and Co-Founder Tom Stevens faced an incredibly tough decision: Tom’s mother, Nancy, had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and was no longer able to safely care for her beloved dog and best friend, Golden Bear. When Tom took Golden Bear away, Nancy’s severe loneliness, depression, and violent anger all worsened. Tom looked around for live animal companion substitutes but couldn’t find anything Nancy liked.  Determined to find a solution, Tom embarked on a multi-year education and research journey. Six years later, Tombot was born.

We’ve already sold out our first litter of Puppies in pre-order, and our waitlist recently crossed the 8,500 mark.  Our customers, hailing from 76 countries around the world, include B2B organizations such as assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, behavioral health institutions, home health agencies, and K-12 schools. In addition to seniors with dementia, we have received orders from seniors living on their own, parents of children with Autism, and adults with loneliness, chronic pain, major depressive disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD.

Seniors with dementia and chronic pain need better alternatives to toxic medications

Tombot’s go-to-market customers are seniors with dementia.  97% of seniors with dementia suffer from debilitating symptoms including loneliness, frustration, delirium, hallucinations, and violent anger. Additionally, over 80% of seniors in nursing homes experience chronic pain. Doctors frequently prescribe these patients psychotropic and opioid medications. In addition to turning seniors into zombies, psychotropics can kill, and opioids increase fall risk.

Source 1, Source 2Source 3

These severe symptoms are not just experienced by seniors and nursing home residents.  Loneliness and depression occur in long-term hospital patients, as well as the adolescent and adult populations at large—all exacerbated by Covid-19.

Few non-pharmacological alternatives to psychotropics exist, leaving doctors and family members of dementia patients desperate for solutions.

A thoughtfully designed robotic animal companion

Peer-reviewed studies have shown that robotic animal companions positively contribute to the ability to cope with stress, anxiety, loneliness, depression, and pain, thus improving overall well-being. Research shows that robotic animals significantly outperform traditional objects, such as dolls or stuffed animals, with the added benefit of reducing pain and the need for pain medications1.

Current competitors in the robotic animal space fall into one of two camps: simplistic children’s toys, or prohibitively expensive robots (Paro, the wide-eyed seal pup, and Sony’s Aibo dog cost $6,400 and $2,900, respectively). For a small fraction of the price, Tombot will incorporate additional features promoting emotional attachment.

Barking up exactly the right tree

Jennie is designed to stimulate emotional attachment and help individuals, families, and communities cope with a spectrum of health adversities at a price most people can afford. She is responsive to touch, voice, movement, and light, and is integrated with a smartphone app that enables customization and software updates to expand and improve her capabilities over time.

Jennie’s body is covered in sensors, allowing her to feel how and where she is being touched or moved, and to hear sounds and voice commands. In order to emulate real dogs, she has been carefully programmed with a rich set of behaviors and sounds.

Her patented realistic appearance and texture were designed with the artistic services of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, known for its unmatched expertise and artistic creativity. Tombot has filed additional patent applications in the USPTO and the international PCT.

Jennie sells for $449. We intend for all future models to also carry a monthly subscription charge. Our two-pronged business model allows us to sell directly to consumers, as well as B2B2C through assisted living and skilled nursing facilities.

A multi-billion-dollar market that we believe will only keep growing

There are currently over 50 million seniors with dementia and mild cognitive impairment worldwide. This number is projected to grow to over 152 million by 2030. But Tombot’s reach doesn’t end there. Robotic pets are on the rise

why invest

Chief Technical Officer

Hank has been a Chief-level executive for more than 40 years. As an engineering and operations expert, Hank has built multiple companies into industry leaders. Hank’s technical curiosity and systems mentality give him the unique ability to fundamentally understand all of the elements of complex systems and processes. These skills have been applied to consumer electronics design and manufacturing, custom software development, computer systems integration, and very large data processing and management, and now robotics.

Hank has also spent many years as a hobbyist roboticist and remote-control airplane builder and competitor. These experiences, combined with his career in engineering and systems design gave Hank the insight on how to technically execute the Tombot robots. Inventing the perception, control and behavior systems for Tombot’s robots, Hank’s ingenuity has led to the filing of a comprehensive family of patents.

Chief Operating Officer

Jesse has spent 20 years in management and leadership positions. Jesse built and managed high-performing internal engineering and operations teams - the largest operating divisions at ACT. Jesse also oversaw very large contract teams and 3rd party suppliers. These experiences have led Jesse to develop best-practices operations systems.

In addition to his technical skills and business acumen, Jesse is a “get stuff done” guy. Creating and adhering to operating budgets and timelines are core strengths. Jesse’s skills begin with the innate ability to accurately forecast budgets and timelines. Accurate projections are critical for the financial management of Tombot, and for setting appropriate customer and investor expectations.

In addition to setting-up Tombot’s IT and operations systems, Jesse constructed and produced all of the realistic behaviors in our prototypes. Jesse leads all aspects of the identification, selection and oversight of Tombot’s supply chain, including the performance testing of key components.

Thomas Edward Stevens

Thomas Edward Stevens

Chairman - Board of Directors

Tom has been in the high tech industry since 1985 - the early days of the PC revolution. The extraordinary demand for PCs at the time far outstripped the supply of workers, creating unusual opportunities for anyone involved. At Novell, Tom was repeatedly promoted and given responsibilities that would only have been attainable after decades of service in more mature industries. Tom was fortunate to receive the necessary training, support and mentorship from senior leadership to take on these heady challenges.

These early experiences provided Tom with the education and confidence to join a startup in late 1989. Functioning as a member of ACT’s Office of the President, Tom oversaw all client-facing activities including sales, marketing, consulting, new product development, and strategic 3rd party relationships. ACT’s core leadership team built the company into one of the world’s largest and most-respected litigation automation firms.

Tom applied his experience and education to Tombot’s product development. Using a data-driven and human-centered design approach, Tom’s leadership has produced a product that we believe not only technically out-performs every competitive product on the market, but is also more highly-desired by our customers. Tom utilized his previous experience as an operator to institute the core financial, accounting, HR, sales and marketing systems to efficiently run and control Tombot’s key management disciplines.

A key feature of ACT was its organizational culture. Rooted in flat hierarchies and diverse, interdisciplinary teams and communications, ACT’s culture led to outlier stats for employee and client retention. Tom’s focus on organizational culture is the root source of Tombot’s success for taking diverse and independent high-performing team members and forming teams that generate results.

Tombot | Waitlist Confirmation Required

Hello Tombot Investor Family!

I am happy to report we are making progress towards bringing Jennie to market.  Over the past 12 months we have re-engineered all her mechanical and electrical subsystems. We now have complete mechanical assemblies, which will help us prepare for in-depth customer testing and ultimately manufacturing.  Additionally, customer demand remains very strong.  Our customer waitlist grows every day, seven days a week.  We even received a request for Jennie for use by astronauts!

Currently, we anticipate our first customer shipments in 2024. If you joined our waitlist prior to March 2022, you will receive an email requiring that you confirm that you wish to remain on our waitlist and that you intend to order a puppy.  The deadline to respond to the email is September 1st.  This updated information will allow us to size our first production orders and further forecast our business needs. When we get close to shipping, we will need payment of your order.   If you joined our waitlist in March 2022 or later, there is no need to confirm.

Important: Please use the email address you used to join our waitlist (the same email address at which you received the waitlist confirmation email).  If you joined our waitlist prior to March 2022 but did not receive an email from us, please check your spam / junk folder, as our emails sometimes get flagged as junk.  You need to click the link in the confirmation email in order to officially confirm.

Thank you for your ongoing support!  Be on the look-out for more announcements in the coming weeks!

With Regulation A+, a non-accredited investor can only invest a maximum of 10% of their annual income or 10% of their net worth per year, whichever is greater. There are no restrictions for accredited investors.

With Regulation Crowdfunding, non-accredited investors with an annual income or net worth less than $124,000, are limited to invest a maximum of 5% of the greater of those two amounts. For those with an annual income and net worth greater than $124,000, he/she is limited to investing 10% of the greater of the two amounts.

At the close of an offering, all investors whose funds have “cleared” by this time will be included in the disbursement. At this time, each investor will receive an email from StartEngine with their Countersigned Subscription Agreement, which will serve as their proof of purchase moving forward.

Please keep in mind that a company can conduct a series of “closes” or withdrawals of funds throughout the duration of the campaign. If you are included in that withdrawal period, you will be emailed your countersigned subscription agreement and proof of purchase immediately following that withdrawal.

StartEngine assists companies in raising capital, and once the offering is closed, we are no longer involved with whether the company chooses to list shares on a secondary market, or what occurs thereafter. Therefore, StartEngine has no control or insight into your investment after the close of the live offering. In addition, we are not permitted to provide financial advice. You may want to contact a financial professional to discuss possible investment outcomes.

For Regulation Crowdfunding, investors are able to cancel their investment at any point throughout the campaign up until 48 hours before the closing of the offering. Note: If the company does a rolling close, they will post an update to their current investors, giving them the opportunity to cancel during this timeframe. If you do not cancel within this 5-day timeframe, your funds will be invested in the company, and you will no longer be able to cancel the investment. If your funds show as ‘Invested’ on your account dashboard, your investment can no longer be canceled.

For Regulation A+, StartEngine allows for a four-hour cancelation period. Once the four-hour window has passed, it is up to each company to set their own cancelation policy. You may find the company’s cancelation policy in the company’s offering circular.

Once your investment is canceled, there is a 10-day clearing period (from the date your investment was submitted). After your funds have cleared the bank, you will receive your refund within 10 business days.

Refunds that are made through ACH payments can take up to 10 business days to clear. Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of the bank, but we will do everything we can to get you your refund as soon as possible. However, every investment needs to go through the clearing process in order to get sent back to the account associated with the investment.

Both Title III (Regulation Crowdfunding) and Title IV (Reg A+) help entrepreneurs crowdfund capital investments from unaccredited and accredited investors. The differences between these regulations are related to the investor limitations, the differing amounts of money companies are permitted to raise, and differing disclosure and filing requirements. To learn more about Regulation Crowdfunding, click here, and for Regulation A+, click here.
