I was born in Brooklyn and raised in Staten Island. I have wonderful immigrant parents that have worked for the City of New York for over 30 years. How do I portray myself as someone that is confident and capable enough to turn a start-up into a billion dollar company and not come off like a pretentious douche bag? I have lived in a number of places (US -NYC and San Diego, Mexico, India) and worked in many industries (government, retail, hospitality, academia). I am a cross between Michael Scott and Tupac, with better hair. In all seriousness, I believe it is my varied experiences that allow me to understand the Sharing Economy and think of it from the perspective of our future users. There is a hole in the market and Rentah can fill it. Rentah can change the world - by reducing waste, building communities, and helping us pay the rent. October 15, 2013 - Present CEO of Rentah President and Director since March 4, 2014. August 2010 - Present - Adjunct Professor of Geography and Political Science for City University of New York. February 2018 - April 2018 - Temporary Project - Senior Administrative Analyst for The City of New York at the Department of Homelessness

From an early age I was introduced to computer science and started programming at the age of 12. My dad thought it was a mistake giving me a computer to use. I’m pretty sure every parent thinks that all their child will do is play games excessively but instead I was honing my programming skills. I mean I did hack into Grand Theft Auto a bunch of times...your welcome, but I was also growing as a person. Getting into programming was a way for me to learn how the world works. In a way, you have the power to create and control certain aspects of the economy through technology and that encouraged me to get a deeper understanding of modern technology. If you're self-taught, you'll find that while the root of programming is logic, it's the space for creativity and style that makes it so exciting."

I’ve always had a passion for design and artistic expression but growing up in a blue-collar area of Georgia, it always seemed like an impossible dream. There just weren’t jobs in that field available in such a rural area, so when NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering reached out to me, I jumped at the opportunity to pursue something that would actually make me feel accomplished and happy, so I packed up my essential belongings and moved to a city hundreds of miles from anyone I have ever known, completely alone, and it was the best choice I’ve ever made. After 2 and a half years at NYU, I made the difficult choice to leave school and begin working, rather than finish school there and drown myself in debt at the start of my life. After that I found Rentah, and for the last 2 and a half years I have poured myself into this site to make it the best it can be. Upgrading the Sharing Economy with Disbursement Tools

Desai compared Rentah’s business model to a more modern form of Craigslist — one that accepts digital payments, quickly disburses funds to users, facilitates communication between parties and allows users to both build profiles and submit ratings based on their experiences.

"I think if more people do little things like this, Desai says, and just see what happens, I think more people will be happy as they forge a new path and create some fun," he added. I tried out the ice cream and the advice. It was a private matter, but both the advice and the ice cream were quite good.

Plenty for Everyone

This past summer, the former Occupy leader ushered in a new arrival to the P-to-P marketplace: Rentah. The selling point of his site, Desai says, is that, unlike its most visible competitors, it doesn’t occupy a niche. You can rent a power drill or an apartment, hire a language teacher or a caterer, or use the marketplace to rent out your wares and skills. But perhaps a bigger distinguishing factor is that Desai, 29, who took a leave from his job last year as an adjunct professor at City University of New York to launch the Brooklyn-based Rentah, is out to prove that capitalism and his Occupy ideals don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

A Greenpoint-based tech startup is looking to make an entrepreneur out of people all over the world. Rentah, an online peer-to-peer platform that officially launched on Thursday, will allow users to rent and provide all kinds of items and services – whether you want to loan your food processor to a neighbor for few hours each week or whether you want to put your Spanish skills to the test by offering lessons – Rentah can enable all such activities. “We’ve created an online platform where anybody can rent from their neighbors, peers, and fellow human beings,” said Anup Desai, the creator and CEO of Rentah, the offices of which are located on West Street, in a Youtube video for the platform. “It’s in the American spirit to be an entrepreneur. We have to make our own way in this world but we don’t have to do it alone.” What’s more, Rentah lets you list your services on the platform free of charge unlike similar online platforms like eBay and Amazon, where customers have to pay to use the services.

The 5 Coolest Startups We Discovered at TechCrunch Disrupt NY

At TechCrunch Disrupt NY, hundreds of startups across areas like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, e-commerce, foodtech and security/IT gathered to introduce other techies and potential investors to their companies. Rentah is a website where people and businesses can earn additional income by renting out the goods, services and spaces they already have. While that might not seem like the most exciting business, the fact that Rentah runs lean and mean and didn’t let the $3,000 ticket stop them from hustling is pretty cool.

A Rentah Update - Many Links!

Hello Investors. It has been a busy 4 months since the end of our campaign. We have many updates to share with you!

We have built, tested and refined both of our applications. You can now find us in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. So please download the apps, leave some positive ratings and share it with your tech, freelancing & sustainably minded friends!

We have also redesigned and improved the UX/UI of our entire desktop and mobile responsive sites. We have also added systems to improve the security of the site to facilitate easier handling of disputes and a better way to facilitate transactions between service providers. You can find this on our website and in the dashboard.

Finally, after a Summer of intense tech and development, and not as much outreach we hoped for, we are ready to hit the market and build communities and scale. We will be releasing a new StartEngine campaign in the next few weeks with an investment goal of 440,000 to fund this.

While we have additional tech goals we plan to accomplish in the upcoming months - implementing spaces, improved matching between providers and renters, QR scanning functionality, and delivery - the plan is to spend the majority of these funds on insurance, marketing and scaling.

You can see the preview of the new campaign here. You will find some new images that were not in the previous campaign such as the developments we have made with disputes and transactions.

More updates to come shortly. #RentahLove

Down to the Wire! T - 5 hours!

There are only 5 more hours left and we are soooo close to our MAX goal! I just wanted to take this chance to potentially reach some of our followers that were thinking about investing before our campaign officially ends.

If and when we hit the max goal we will be able to show larger investors that there is more than sufficient interest behind developing and executing this product, and it will set us up perfectly for a proper seed round in the Fall! Thank you for joining us on this journey.

That is all! Much #RentahLove

The Last Update #Thankful

Many books have been written about business, entrepreneurship, and ambition. I don’t believe there is one particular recipe that leads to “success” but there are certain ingredients that are necessary. One of those foundational ingredients is good people. We are thankful, that as of 4pm eastern time, we are 191+ people stronger!

As I’ve mentioned in previous updates Rentah is more than a business for me, it is a mission. With Rentah we can reduce waste and consumption and earn more by reusing our goods; we will also keep our money local by renting from local providers; and finally, by meeting and working with people within your community we hope to forge new connections and relationships. Our goals and benefits are many but our focus is be the largest Sharing Economy company on the planet.

I want to end this campaign with one more sincere thanks and appreciation, not just for your investments, but also your ideas, insights and enthusiasm. We THANK YOU ALL for your involvement and look forward to growing and succeeding together :)

“a rising tide lifts all boats” #RentahLove

A Story of Spring and Summer

Hey! We are almost at our goal!  We are extremely pleased and excited to have 180 new investors, allies, and supporters on board. I have had the pleasure to speak to many of you and I look forward to building relationships with all of you. As we come to an end I wanted to give you guys an overall update of the company and the plans moving forward.

We had many plans when we launched this campaign in preparation for the Summer.

1. To release the iOS app.

Result: We released our beta iOS app internally about 6 weeks ago and have been testing, debugging, and developing furiously since then. We like the progress and feel confident we can push our App to the App store around July 15th and have it available for ALL  to use by the end of July.

We will be doing continual updates throughout the Summer and into the Fall marketing push into dorms - think furniture, tutoring, textbooks, gigs etc and holidays - think renting costumes for Halloween, caterers for Thanksgiving, and gift wrappers for Christmas.

2. Update the Website

Result: Based off of the feedback from users and focus group it was determined that we needed to make some changes to our Dashboard and improve the overall listing and requesting process. We have completely redesigned the process for creating and requesting listings while improving communication and messaging features to handle disputes. These updates will be pushed alongside the iOS application in July. Each of of users will now have the ability to better manage all of their business while also gaining access to statistics such as where users are coming from and potential customers that have recently signed up.

3. To build a marketing team

Result: We have added to our social media, marketing and street teams. The Summer is a time when colleges let out and young talent is looking for opportunities to show their mettle. We were able to secure some folks with skills in sales, PR, and events to help increase our presence on the city streets, and at tech events. Look out for us!

4. To build hyper local communities

Our plan has been to target high density urban areas and specifically large properties and developments where people are living very close to each other. We have meetings in place and will begin on boarding buildings once we release the iOS to the app store. We want to make sure that every one of our potential users will be able to use Rentah on all their devices regardless of their OS.

5. We will work diligently throughout the Summer, learning and improving based on the feedback from our new and old users and plan on raising half a million to a million dollars in the Fall. Our goals for the Fall will be to secure enough funding for insurance, improve our overall marketing efforts and to continue to improve our product.

We look forward to making you proud and prosperous!

The World Cup and Getting Sporty.

What a time! Dozens of countries and Billions of people glued to their television sets and radios or out in squares and plazas living and dying with every goal scored! Its a spectacle and proof that the world for all its differences can agree over something.

In that spirit I wanted to relate this to a few use cases for all of us trying to get fit and be our best selves.

Its Summer! That means, for most of us, it is baseball season! Paul Stingo is a former high school and college baseball player who has put his services and skills for rent to teach the youth. It can be difficult for Fathers and Mothers to come home from work (probably exhausted) and then run around with their future athletes. On Rentah those same Mothers and Fathers can rent out Paul's skills to help their kids maximize their talents. This can also be a great way for people to find the equipment (Hockey Sticks, Golf Clubs, Bats, Snowboards etc) they may need - or to make money off of the equipment they already have.

We are not all athletes, but seeing all these fit people run around a soccer field for 90 minutes will certainly lead us to reflect on our own athletic capabilities. We will probably not accomplish our childhood dreams of becoming professionals, but it is not to late to simply better ourselves.  You can also rent out Irina from New Jersey as a Health and Wellness Coach to help you reach your goals via her expertise and personalized support.

We never realize the importance of health until we no longer have it. One of the things that Rentah makes possible is to help support these new kinds of trainers, fitness experts, athletes, and nutritionists to make some extra money while spreading their unique knowledge. Lets take advantage of all of this sunny weather, become healthier, eat our greens, make some green, and feel great. #RentahLove

Summer Love!

The times are a changing....literally and metaphorically. This is June. It is the month of Weddings as well as Pride!

It was only 50 years ago (1967) when interracial marriage was legalized in the United States of America (Loving v. Virginia) and now nearly 1 in 6 marriages are mixed-race. It is also said that today 4 in 10 of all marriages are interfaith. 50 years ago the LGBT community was in the shadows of our society and now they have parades, honestly represented in media and entertainment, and can get married and celebrate their love like anyone else. The world is becoming more and more diverse and open minded. Even if you do not agree with these changes culturally or  politically, it is certainly good economically, considering today's national average of $30,000+ per wedding!

I started doing presiding over weddings because my friends had asked me to do theirs (picture below) and realized it was fun! I also realized just how hard it is find officiants that make all families happy. I saw this first hand when I would see my cousins getting married and the navigation they had to do to satisfy our family's and their spouses family's desires. My family is hard to please! I figured considering my background studying various cultures and religions I could be a bridge and give the families involved a bit of everything they wanted spiritually while also giving the bride and groom some peace of mind! You can find me on Rentah : )

Besides celebrations of Love,  June also happens to be the beginning of Summer. A time to do yard work! You could rent a lawnmower from your local tool library like this one based in Asheville, North Carolina! I mean how many lawnmowers does a neighborhood need?

Globally, cultural views on Love have shifted dramatically. I firmly believe the same type of drastic shift will happen culturally and economically in regards to our consumption and buying habits, and the ethics behind them. We can already see the signs in the automotive industry of how people are moving towards environmentally efficient vehicles (Tesla), and access over ownership (Uber, Lyft).  We firmly believe the same shift will happen with the renting of Goods.

Lets not forget Renting = Reusing. Renting from your neighbors keeps your money Local. Also, renting from your neighbor could lead to a new friend :) It just makes sense. #RentahLove

Lessons from our Fathers.

Happy Fathers Day! This is a day often filled with happiness, sentimentality. and nostalgia. Not everyone has been blessed to have had wonderful role models growing up and I believe it important for us to cherish those figures, wherever we can find them, that have  guided us through the years.

Speaking of Family! I wanted to share three stories that highlight what family means to us. The first is regarding one of our newest investors!

Honestly this message warmed our hearts in the office. The reason we wanted to do #EquityCrowdFunding was so we could attract unique and new types of investors to our platform. The very types of investors that would be using our platform! I love that Yvonne and the Munoz family made this decision together. I also love that they are out in Alaska and recognize that not all tech companies are willing to think about smaller markets - even though they claim to want to change the world. Since the Munoz's are now involved wee have no choice to be thinking about Alaska! At Rentah ours is a goal to be able to help these undeserved areas and help families earn and save additional income with the goods and services they already have. Remember in the older days when we used to consider purchases for the home to be investments? We want to bring back that ethic. We are thankful to have investors like yourselves bringing diverse and varied experiences to our collective table.

The second story involves a quick trip I took to India to see my Grandfather and visit the old hometown and villages of my family. Its amazing how much can change in 70 years. My parents grew up using branches to brush their teeth and sharing one bathroom with 20 other family member with water having to come from the well in the center of town. Now they have been living in New York City for 35 years with their daughter pulling in million dollar grants for NGO's that help the elderly and their son trying to change the way people consume goods and services.

While most of the trip was wholesome and beautiful I was once again reminded why Rentah is necessary. In the last 70 years India's population has gone from 300 million people to 1.2 BIllion people. They have added 3 United States sized populations to their country that is only 33% of the size of the United States - in just 70 years! There is intense competition for the few jobs that open up. And with there being few jobs there also happens to be huge corruption. The huge amount of people also leads to huge pollution and waste.  Then there is the poverty and pain you see across faces wherever you travel in India.

The Sharing Economy and Rentah will not solve any of these problems but they can diminish them. We need to promote the idea that you can be your won boss and find unique talents and skills within yourself to find work when there is none. As communities we should be aware of the impact we have when we simply buy and throwaway. The more we rent - the more we reuse - the more money we keep in our communities and the more resources we keep for future generations. What changes will we see in the next 70?

This was the basis of a lecture I gave out there. These are pictures from a lecture I gave at LD Engineering College to some students, professors and local entrepreneurs.

The 3rd story is about my Dad. My dad is a a cheesy dad. And one of the things he is most proud of is how little trash we produce in our home after a week. It so little (about the size of one small grocery bag)  that one day the sanitation driver remarked to my father how they were all aware that our house was the easiest one for them on their route. Trash and consumption are not sexy topics or fun, but like parenting, its often the dirty and under appreciated work that is most important. That bit of trash meant he did not waste food or money and in fact made that sanitation workers life easier. Rentah aims to do just that type of work.

Thank You for teaching us the value of hard work, fiscal responsibility, and resource allocation : ) #RentahLove

Eating Healthy and Dressing to Impress... a couple college use cases.

We consider Rentah to be unique compared to our competitors because we include the rental of pretty much anything. This gives people an opportunity to not only make money from the things that they own, but also their skills and whatever they are passionate about.

For example, Amanda is a college student studying occupational therapy that is based in Staten Island. For additional experience in the health world and to earn extra income she offers  service in healthy living.

Also one of our newest members, Suzy from California, offers her expertise in fashion. She rents out trendy outfits on demand and also offers her services as a personal assistant and personal shopper.

It’s awesome to see members who take advantage being able to offer both goods and services. On Rentah we want our entrepreneurs, freelancers, and users to feel like they have the freedom to best provide for themselves.

Please keep in mind that a company can conduct a series of “closes” or withdrawals of funds throughout the duration of the campaign. If you are included in that withdrawal period, you will be emailed your countersigned subscription agreement and proof of purchase immediately following that withdrawal.

StartEngine assists companies in raising capital, and once the offering is closed, we are no longer involved with whether the company chooses to list shares on a secondary market, or what occurs thereafter. However, every investment needs to go through the clearing process in order to get sent back to the account associated with the investment.

Both Title III (Regulation Crowdfunding) and Title IV (Reg A+) help entrepreneurs crowdfund capital investments from unaccredited and accredited investors. The differences between these regulations are related to the investor limitations, the differing amounts of money companies are permitted to raise, and differing disclosure and filing requirements.
