The Problem

Most Remote Workers Don’t Have a Private Home Office

In 2018, CEO & Founder Anthony Taylor-Weber was crouched every day over the kitchen table, working from home with his family of four. If you share a living space with family members, roommates, or pets, you know all too well the distractions that come with working from home and the challenge of finding a quiet spot to focus or take calls. 

Seeking to create a separate space of his own, Anthony, a home inspector by trade, began doing his own research—but found that beyond storage sheds, house expansions, remodels, and ADUs, there weren’t many viable avenues. We’re quick to educate customers on what we offer and what we do not. Our units are not ADUs—which are intended for daily living, require plumbing, and have their own address. We’re also not “tiny homes,” which are mobile living units that require road permits. Neither are we sheds or “she-sheds,” which are converted storage sheds built for yard equipment. Rather, an Outdoor Office is a fully finished space without the plumbing feature, designed to provide everything required for a comfortable work space. This key difference allows us the freedom to build our units without structural planning, city permits and submittals, long timeframes, and critically—at much lower costs.

Outdoor Office oversees every step of the process from end-to-end. We use some of the highest-rated and longest-lasting materials on the market, and just two hours after delivery, the units are ready for use. Our units start around $28K and average around $40K, with a profit margin of 20–28%. As we grow, we'd like to reduce operating and material costs by 10-20%, making our product more affordable while maximizing profits.

One of our most recent successes has been our online builder tool, which gives potential clients the opportunity to design their custom space on a computer, phone, or tablet. With live 3D capabilities, users are able to see the project and what it would look like in their space, and by Q2 of 2023, we expect to have full interior visual options with build-outs and walk-thru technology. In Q1 2022 alone, this tool has helped us increase quotes by 119% when compared to all of 2021.

The 10% StartEngine OWNers' Bonus

She sheds, man caves, backyard studios. … If the dream is to have somewhere separate to play, create or do some serious work but the reality doesn’t include the budget or space for a major remodel, Outdoor Office can fill the gap.

The company was started in 2018 by Anthony and Jamie Taylor-Weber to satisfy their own need for space. Outdoor Office builds custom, modular home offices and studios at its Tualatin manufacturing facility. By working in a controlled environment, less time and materials are wasted, fewer workers are needed to complete a project and higher quality standards can be achieved over traditional construction.

A fully finished product is delivered to customers, who can go about their daily lives without interruption, construction delays, noise or onsite hassles. Clients can move in and start working within two to three hours in a functional space that includes insulation, drywall, flooring, lighting, electrical, heating, cooling and internet capability. Outdoor Office adds value to a primary property when the cost of home remodeling or additions is reaching an all-time high.

Outdoor Office’s biggest technological advance was the introduction of an online tool, #BuildYourSpace, which allows clients anywhere in the U.S. to design a custom outdoor office. It provides them with pricing, options, design features and a selection of finishes.

“We have increased our quotes by over 334% this year from 2021, and we expect more to come as we develop more options based on the location of the client,” Taylor-Weber said.

Since 2019, Outdoor Office has averaged 472% growth in sales year over year, he said.

“In Q1 2022 we surpassed our 2021 YTD sales by over $1.2 million, and the market for our product has grown from 6% of the workforce to over 35%. In 2023 we also hope to announce some big news when it comes to partnerships.”

Outdoor Office isn’t stalling.

“We are moving into our fifth location in four years due to our growth. We believe this will be a long-term location for the Northwest region. Plans to expand our crews and support staff have already been ramped up,” Taylor-Weber said.

So I was tempted to buy 25k of stock, in part because I need a work space ASAP and your build time is 6 weeks. However your 28k qoute on the page doesn't seem to pan out when you use your builder the lowest you can go is still in the 33k+ range requiring at least 38k to have something that is "workable" size wise. Boxable gives me a larger space with plumbing, a toilet, small kitchen, electric and ac for 40-50k... Other than your turn around time I don't see the advantage this company has. Still because of where you are located you are still competitive for the moment and if it was possible able to buy enough stocks to cover the full cost of the installation then I'd probably go with the 38k qoute, but it's hard to throw another 13k after 25k when I'm not 100,% convinced this will company will still be competing in 5 years noe thst boxable is manufacturing in 2 states with plans of opening a 3rd. Their delivery and installation only runs me 2k at the moment and I pre-ordered so I'm locked in at 42k, the only issue being a literally year waiting list and I need something within three months. So how do you order the 28k build? Will you allow more than 25k purchase in order to secure a 38k unit. Like if I bought 25k and my wife bought 13k could we combined our credit to buy a 38k office installation?

I have few questions. 1) how would you differentiate between Boxable and yourself. What is the competitive advantage of a customer going with you compared to it. 2) You are profitable company in such a scenario why are you coming for funding over here for just 1 Million? shouldn't you be able to get that investment at better terms from the banks? 3) What is the average size of one contract? 4) Do you have pipeline for the works if yes then what is the total value of pipeline that you have at this point? 5) I see that its a family organization are salaries being taken by the founders at this point? If not when are they expecting to take the salaries and what would be the expected salaries?
