Hello MSBAI GURU community!
We began November with a new level of excitement that has been forming during the last couple of months. Did you know that the setting for the classic science fiction film Blade Runner was Los Angeles, November 2019? I want to tell you about some things coming together right now that are setting the stage for us to have the unbelievable timing that Bill Gross has talked about being essential to the most successful startups. A new article from Menlo Ventures defines the 'SaaS Trifecta' (replaces obsolete workflows, becomes system of record, drives network effects and monetizes ecosystem) which we have in GURU, and author Matt Murphy emphasizes: founders who have "lived the problem" are often the best equipped to solve it — That's exactly how we came up with GURU!
New DOE & NSF funding for AI
In a recent update we talked about the Department of Energy's new Artificial Intelligence Technology Office. Well, DOE is joining a global rush to fund AI. "Worldwide corporate AI funding is expected to hit $35.8 billion this year, up 44% from 2018." New announcements are stating "This is just the beginning" and new articles just published indicate the excitement. People leading the charge like Oak Ridge National Laboratory's AI Program Director David Womble talk about how AI is going to augment scientists and engineers in their R&D work and "help assimilate that information and lead toward the hypotheses." The National Science Foundation has just announced major new initiatives for AI in areas including trustworthy AI, manufacturing, and AI for discovery in physics.
AI History, and the Future
Our assessment at MSBAI is that while early AI (in past decades) met serious limitations of pure symbolic expert systems that couldn't be developed fast enough to be broadly useful, the latest Deep Learning achievements have had the most profound impact in areas where data is relatively inexpensive and physical rules don't need to be 'baked in'. Now, some researchers have swung back in the other direction again, but this time knowing both symbolic and deep learning methods need to be mated together (this is a one of the foundations of GURU's technology).
While the sci-fi version of LA Nov. 2019 depicted in Blade Runner had fully functioning Artificial General Intelligence already, we at MSBAI have been able to adopt some of the working research outcomes from the real AGI research community for use in GURU right now. We truly do have unbelievable timing, as the national interest in using AI to augment engineers and scientists is skyrocketing, along with the government research and private investment budgets. With the pressure for the High Performance Computing industry to service a massive unmet market need of non-specialist product designers and manufacturers, and in conjunction with some of the latest AI methods coming online that will make it possible — the timing could not be better!
Make sure you share this with your friends, our success is your success — and if you have not yet finished your investment, make sure to do so! Together, we're empowering engineers to invent the future!
