We’re launching a new website in July 2017. The redesign is focused on increasing our conversion rates.

We are ramping up advertising, social media, PR, and events like trunk shows and festival tours. At the same time, we’ve brought our customer acquisition cost down by 70% this year.  Our advertising is much more effective, so we’ll be adding to the budget.

Use of Proceeds

Funds raised from this campaign will go to two main things: adding to our inventory and increasing advertising. Both are key in scaling our business. If we reach our goal of $100K, the proceeds will be used as follows:

  • StartEngine Fees: $6,000

  • R&D and Production: $20,000

  • Marketing: $40,000

  • Working Capital: $24,000

Global Vision

Our plan is to grow our revenue 5X revenue year over year, to $14 million in 2019.


We will achieve this by scaling sales. We’ll move from direct to consumer at MI-OLA.com to trunk shows, to a festival tour in 2018, and then flagship retail outlets and a wholesale deal with a large retailer like Nordstrom or Saks in 2019. 

Exit Strategy

Our strategy is to grow the business to hit $14 million in revenue in 2019. At that number, we will be well positioned for acquisition.

We are actively developing collaborations and relationships to facilitate an acquisition. While nothing is certain, we are planning for investors to see a cash event in 2019.


What is a SAFE?


SAFE means Simple Agreement for Equity. The SAFE was first rolled out to Y-Combinator companies on Clerky in YC's Winter 2014 class. Since then, it has become the predominant method for YC companies to raise their first seed capital. By using the SAFE, they have raised capital at virtually no legal cost - the SAFE is a 4 page document!  And, hundreds of millions of dollars of capital have gone into startups already using SAFEs.  Shortly after the SAFE was created, 500 Startups developed their version, called the KISS (Keep It Simple Security).


Why did we choose a SAFE?


We know startups have a "pie-in-the-sky" valuation problem, and at MI OLA, we want our investors to be both those who see the benefit of our brand's ability to infiltrate the market and those who buy and wear our swimwear. As a flexible, one-document security without numerous terms to negotiate,the only question up for debate with a SAFE is the valuation cap. Because a safe has no expiration or maturity date, there should be no time or money spent dealing with extending maturity dates, revising interest rates or the like. We believe a SAFE is the right option for both us and our investors to get everyone the best terms possible.

  • To date, we have over 25% of our customer base enrolled.  The benchmark for success are 15% participation and up. 
  • In the first month, we have seen a redemption rate of 19% of rewards.  The benchmark for success in the US is 14.5% and up. 
  • 20% of our revenue in the first month was enabled by reward redemption. 
  • Our customers are referring MI OLA to their friends.  We've had an ROI on the cost of our loyalty program already, in savings on advertising costs and on customer acquisition costs.

I was also approached by individual angels to continue discussions, and have a meeting at 11AM with one today.

  • We're in discussions with a hollywood news reporter to join MI OLA, and to focus on celebrity outreach.  This woman has deep relationships with celebrities, and focuses on female empowerment in her philanthropy.  She's also worn MI OLA.  


  • We expecting to see MI OLA  featured on Rose Byrne on the cover of Hamptons Magazine, hitting newsstands shortly.


  • We just launched our Loyalty program for customers, and in less than 1 month, we have 18% of our customers actively participating.  (15% enrolled is the benchmark for a successful program.)  


  • We've also seen an immediate ROI in the loyalty platform, via referral purchases and traffic.  We've driven the traffic equivalence of $1000 in ad spend to MI-OLA.com, in just a few weeks.

Our year is cruising along, and we’re entering our peak sales season.  And we had a particularly good weekend of sales. 

We’re getting meetings with interested Angels for our seed round,  and we're pitching a group of 100 interested angel investors, this week at the Penn Club in NYC.

Where we are winning: 

  • We get rave reviews from customers who have tried MI OLA and love it.  And 33% of our revenue is driven by repeat purchases. 
  • We're harnessing the power of word of mouth for our most loyal customers and have started to see purchases driven by referral, in a measurable, online way. 
  • Our conversion rate has increased +20% due to our move to shopify, with a +50% conversion this past weekend.   
  • It’s looking like MI OLA will be on the cover of Hampton’s Magazine, on Rose Byrne…which will publish any minute. 
  • We have angel investors taking our meetings and interested in jumping on a deal, when we can get a lead. 
  • We just got back from attending Jason Calcanis' Launch University in SF - a free, curated, 2 day program for select female founders. 


The losses:

  • Our Facebook acquisition strategy is being challenged by the changes to Facebook and the market has been flooded by cheap swimwear that's advertising quite a bit on FB.   

We know this is a blip in the market. Once women get the terrible swimwear from these companies, they will not repurchase.  Nonetheless, it's pushing us to find additional acquisition channels for when FB stops working well. 


What we’re doing: 

  • We are re-examining our customer acquisition strategy to find new channels to replace facebook. 
  • We’re getting promotional to drive sales and compete with the cheap swimwear drop-shippers.  
  • We’ve launched a loyalty program to drive even more repeat purchases, and to harness the word of mouth power that MI OLA has. 
  • We’re bringing on 2 new team members, for equity, to drive sales and investment.  
  • We’re pursuing partnerships with celebrities in Hollywood to get us the push we need. 
  • We’re ready to start working with the agency that grew Bonobos & Canada Goose.  We’ll engage with them on email marketing, and may extend once they show results.

Excellent November Results. New Collection Sells Out.

November sales were up +73% vs. LY and were driven by robust sales in the last week of the month. 

At the same time, we launched our new Blue Lagoon collection - as seen below . It has almost completely sold out within the week and we're placing another order with our factory.  Customers have been contacting us about this print since August, and the demand has held. 

We're launching our new website this month, and will be featuring videos on our product pages, to allow shoppers to see how well MI OLA  fits and functions.  In video, you can't hide imperfections while the model is moving.  Luckily, we don't have to.  

Women are always impressed when they touch, and feel MI OLA, and when they see MI OLA on someone, so we're working hard to find ways to bring this experience to our customer online, and via our pop-up shops. 

For those of you who are investors, thank you for providing us with the capital to grow and improve.  Please share the news of our campaign, and of MI OLA.

Improving our Shopping Experience with Video

We are making it easier for our customers to find the best suit for them and to see the MI OLA difference. 

Last week, Myra Gonzalez and the team shot videos for every style of our swimwear. The videos will debut our our site next month.  Here's a quick Behind the Scenes video - a sneak peek of the type of video that will go on every product page. 

Video highlights the great fit of our suits and it show the swimwear from every angle during movement.  With video, you can't fake good fit. Nor can you photoshop any details.  And that's exactly why we love it.  

Our swimwear is the best fitting swimwear that women will find.  When you combine that with the stay put utility, we get customers that won't wear anything but MI OLA.

Record Sales in September!

We closed this summer with a bang, with our end of season sale. 

We had record sales in September, surpassing that of last year. 

55% of our customers repeat purchased during September.   Many VIP customers tend to stock up on multiples of their favorites during our sale. 

Customer LTV also reached a new peak in September and is 5x our Customer Acquisition Cost.   That's excellent but also shows us we should be spending more in customer acquisition to drive more sales. 

October is typically a quiet month for swimwear sales, but this month we've had many orders from the warmer states in the US - especially Hawaii.   And we have MI OLA in a new country, Gabon!  Gabon is the 36th country for MI OLA.

We have an important announcement:  We are extending our offering deadline to October 31, 2017

We have made this decision based on the overwhelming amount of positive feedback and requests to extend the campaign.

 

What this means for our current investors:

Because we are adjusting our deadline, investors whose funds have not yet been cleared must reconfirm their investment before Tuesday, September 5, 2017. If investors do not reconfirm before the deadline, their investment will be canceled and the withdrawn funds will be refunded.

 

How to reconfirm your investment:

Each investor who needs to reconfirm their investment will receive an email shortly from StartEngine with a secure link allowing investors to reconfirm their investment.

In June, MI OLA held trunk shows at Bar Method locations in the NY area. The show yielded great sales, helped us learn for our eventual trunk show series next year, and is a great way to find new customers in our target market.

Speaking of customers, our acquisition cost has decreased by a whopping 71% so far this year!

MI OLA April Sales Update

Good morning!

Thank you so much for your interest in MI OLA! We love having you on board. 

Here are some key highlights of the past few months:

  • April sales are 3x LY, and more than our sales for FY 2013.
  • March and April sales this year were the same as our peak month of July LY.
  • We just learned we'll be featured in SHAPE magazine this June.  This year we’ve been featured in the NY Times, Outside Magazine’s Summer Gear Guide, Elle, Shape, People en Espanol and numerous other media outlets. 

Our growth has been impressive.  It’s been consistent.  And it’s been limited by lack of capital.  (We could do a consistent 5X growth, given the capital.)  Help us get there!

 We have the secret sauce:  the killer brand and the exclusive product. We know how to find and keep our customers (33% of our customers repeat purchase.)   What we need now is capital to grow and become even more dominant as the first mover bringing together high fashion, high function and high quality swimwear.
